If I want to use it as a toddler bed do I need to buy separate hardware or just leave one side off?

I have this bed in a different color and we just took one side off and lowered the bed “springs” to the mid level and it’s been fine for 2years.

We just bought this for our LO. I noticed that the spring tabs are turned the opposite way than they are in the instruction manual. Is that just something you decided to do on your own?.
