I did all my citations manually, my thesis was by publications too, so I had to adapt the references for each journal manually (FML). Then before submission the journal articles comprised in my results chapters all had to be changed back to APA, absolute nightmare - I can’t believe I was so unorganised lol.

Ma'am... I have never been so intrigued by a citation management pitch in my life! 😆 That thing looks so helpful! I use Zotero, and it's fiiine, but it's not as intuitive as I would like. Anyway, I'll be looking into this one.

Absolutely curious, is it common to take longer than 5yrs to complete an English PhD? For background I finished my biochemistry PhD in 3.5yrs which included teaching of medical and dental students in 2/3 time way. I'm honestly curious how your system works as we were taught to think of our PhD like working a full time job

This is a good question! Based on my experience with friends I have in STEM fields, those PhD programs are often much shorter! It's not that they are any easier, but the tasks at hand are usually clearly defined and the dissertation is often based on systematized studies and has a specific formula to follow. When I got accepted into my joint MA/PhD program at IU, I was offered a 6-year contract (of guaranteed funding). It is pretty rare for folks to finish within their contracted time in my experience, and most apply to be teaching fellows (ABD required) or take on other writing program admin tasks. So I'd saying that taking 7 years to finish my MA/PhD program in English is probably pretty typical!

also in my experience, STEM programs offer better funding situations :') so lots of folks in English/the humanities take on additional jobs to help makes ends meet, unfortunately :')
