I want to be a teacher like Susan. I don’t know how she does it. I struggle so much, especially because I teach a 1st-2nd combo class and can’t seem to figure out how to fit it all in for two grade levels. 😩

@@Cwazy4heaven Goodness! I'd also struggle to do that. The fact that you are concerned attests to your good intentions as a teacher. You are definitely Susan's tribe. Bless you

I always look forward to Susan Sundays! Thank you for all you do. We adopted a new resource this year. And like all new resources, there are solid parts and some not-so solid parts. We are struggling with following the writing portion. It's just too complicated and too many steps for our kids to follow (and for us to teach). Every unit we say "they are FIRST graders!" I so appreciate your explicit teaching with writing. You said in this video "the first writing we did together. Now we'll see what they can do on their own." I LOVE this. Exactly how we should be doing it. We are on "how-to" books right now. Your student's work is terrific!

Hi Susan, I am a big fan of yours, love watching what you've been up to and also how you create a warm working space for your little learners and yourself😊. We use Read Write Inc. in foundation through to primary KS1&2 then for those who need are still in need of intervention We use the Fresh Start RWI ( a more mature content way of phonics learners for older learners). I love this programme and would recommend to anyone who love teaching phonics, reading is the gateway to the world and writing can be the way everyone can create there own world with stories or songs. Blessings Susie🇬🇧🙏

As soon as you said EL Education, I had to know your thoughts. Thank you for sharing! As someone who uses EL, and has been for four years in Kinder, we have supplemented SO much in our module block. We have completely changed module one to fit student needs/to make it more developmentally appropriate for 1st quarter kindergarteners, and have done a lot of work in module 2 and 3 as well. We have never once taught a lab due to time restraints. There are some really good texts in EL that are so strong, but overall, the curriculum is not my favorite. Also, there are very little writing opportunities. We have supplemented all writing lessons to teach foundational writing skills.

We just went through the whole process! We explored HMH into reading, EL, Amplify CKLA, and Wonders. What you really need to look at is the ESSA ratings, not EdReports. CKLA is actually evidenced based, it was by far superior to the rest we saw. The foundational skills program of Amplify is far superior. Their scope and sequence, routines, decodables, correlation with Read works, their Boost program, alllll of it is amazing! Also, they’re coming out with color student workbooks for the fall, which will be much better… that’s the only reason we liked HMH, because the student workbooks were in color. But their foundational skills program is flawed and it’s all flashy and shiny, by Amplify has far better content and skills program. We just starting piloting it and so far so good!

Hello Susan. Thank you for all the amazing information, tips and tools you share, they are valuable! I am wondering how you get through everything that you just showed in your video in one day. What sort of time do you spend in each learning activity? Also I am wondering if you have looked at the UFLI program for phonics?

Hi Susan! Love all your videos and knowledge on teaching! So I taught K and 1st EL for a few years and very much disliked it 😊 It was SO much prep, very little foundational skills. The writing was pretty much nonexistent. I could never get through each lesson and the kids were so bored. The units went on forever! Also the fun lab piece looked awesome but it was SO much prep and planning with each unit that many teachers never had time to fully use it. I left that school and the curriculum was the biggest reason.

We use Wit & wisdom and I use UFLI for foundational skills. We were using Fundations, but found it was not meeting our needs. I love UFLI. The manual for W&W is hard to navigate and there is too much for one day. I love the books and have been trying to align them with critical concepts. How often do you work on writing? Thanks.

I teach first grade and have taught first for 29 years. I'm interested in hearing more about the reading programs you guys are reviewing. I use SAVVAS, their are pros and cons, not sure what to share and don't want to be only negative. The biggest thing for red flags is it has every single" buzz words" but I feel it is so choppy, hard to follow the manual, and the online program, so many glitches. Don't know if you are looking into iReady reading. We don't use this program but we are using their assessment part that is online.

Hi Susan, I enjoy watching your videos :) my district piloted EL last year and fully adopted it this year… *sigh, where do I begin 🥴. The manual is toooo long, our grade level purchased a PowerPoint on TPT that covered each module, just too many parts to go with it. Also, the lessons are so long, each lesson is supposed to last 50 minutes. Ummmm have they met first graders?! We teach the meat and throw away the bones, lol. Long story short, I’m not a fan.

what sucked about the last pilot program I participated in, was that they wouldn't let us get separate curriculum for grade levels. like k-3 and 4-6. There are separate needs for each grade band. Some are great for low some are amazing for the higher levels... There ARE no fully encompassing curriculums! lmao. This is why my district adopted a curriculum years ago and they gave us tons of supplemental things
@SusanJonesTeaching

Ugh, yes I agree! We know there will be no perfect one, but I am sad at the thought of possibly not having one that I like at least a little lol!

@@SusanJonesTeaching noooo I agree with you. In our pilot it just felt like th needs of the higher grade level kids were thought of as priority. mainly because of testing

EL isn’t difficult to navigate, the teacher guide just takes time. There are a lot of resources (i.e., slide decks) and it supports ESL and students with disabilities without general education teachers needing to spend tons of time differentiating. This is what the focal point should be. It might seem like a hard turn from all things Lucy, but realistically you’ve gotta focus on inclusion and EL does that. I was in Boston for years… focus on inclusion cause that’s where education is going.

I worked at a district that used EL. I would not recommend it. Everything you said about it is true plus some. It was not good for teaching young children to read.

We started using EL this year and so far, I am not the biggest fan. Alot of repetition which can get quite boring not only for me but for the students. We do not use the foundational skills piece of EL as we use something else for that. We also do not do the labs...there is no time. I agree with another commenter that there is so much prep and planning to do. My other critique of EL is that it is really wordy and just too much...to me it is not the most user friendly. Thank you for sharing your thoughts about EL...I feel validated in my own opinion. Our admin chose this curriculum after researching on their own. We did not have a committee or group of teachers that were included in the process:/
@SusanJonesTeaching
@SusanJonesTeaching 3 месяца назад
Yes, even just looking through the manuals for a week or two was daunting!! The wordiness was too much! I feel lucky that our district heavily relies on the input of teachers before just adopting something - I know many districts do not!

My district has been using EL for years now and I do NOT recommend the program. Your first glance instincts were right on! We only have 3 topics all year in first grade. Including half a year on "birds." The decodable books are terrible! Please read several of them before you let anyone recommend this program.
