WHO AM I?
I am a Harvard Graduate School of Education alumni '16 and a current PhD student in the Department of Education Studies at the University of California San Diego. I produce videos about the graduate school application and my journey through a PhD program. Subscribe to follow my journey through the PhD experience and to gain insight on how to best prepare for the graduate school application process.
I created this channel because I did not have access to many resources when I was applying for graduate programs. Now that I have been through two graduate school application processes, I want to share my knowledge and the helpful information I have gained through those experiences.
Additionally, for the past four years, I have been working as a Retention Specialist and Director for a federally-funded program at a higher education institution. I spent these four years helping over 400 students to apply to four-year institutions, attain scholarships, and navigate the higher education system. I created this channel in order to share my knowledge of college access as it pertains to graduate school.

What’s up scholars! Do you all want me to make a video talking about graduate school housing? If so, what questions do you have?
@ThayHenriques
@ThayHenriques 2 года назад
Hey, Ivan! I would like to know if your stipend as a Ph.D. student at UCSD would be enough to live by yourself. Thanks in advance.

@@ThayHenriques Hi Thayane, I made a video where I break down my PhD stipend for my first year. I was living at home back in Washington so I do not know how that would translate to San Diego. I will make future videos where I share my grad school finances so stay tuned for that since I will be living in San Diego and will have a better answer to your question later.

@@IvanValdovinosGradSchool thanks a lot, that would be very helpful. I am planning to apply to UCSD, but I am worried. I know that it is a expensive city and I want to make sure I will be able to cover my basic expenses. I watched you video, you got a fellowship, right?

@@ThayHenriques My program funding is structured where first year students receive a stipend only for that year. After that, we receive a maximum of a little over $21k from working as a research assistant, TA, reader, etc. The institution does offer 4-5 year fellowships and it’s based on your initial application plus a nomination letter from your department. I did not receive one of those fellowships, unfortunately.

Hi Ivan, I'm moving to UCSD soon as a grad student (international). I'm very interested in learning more about living costs and in general things to do around campus. Thanks!

Hi Alejandra, I’m terms of living La Jolla is really expensive. You are looking at paying somewhere around $1,000+ US dollars per month for a room in a shared apartment. UCSD does offer shared room options kind of like dorm style but in an apartment for a lower cost. Other than that, cheaper accommodations can be found as you move outside of La Jolla and into San Diego. Let me know if you have specific questions about housing/living costs. My recommendation would be ucsd graduate housing since it’s close to campus.

@@IvanValdovinosGradSchool Hi, thanks for your response! I secured a room in Nuevo West for about 970 a month, but I'm also curious as to other living costs (food, restaurants, events etc) I'm on a stipend and its not much!

@@alejandrat1933 Hey! I'm also an international grad student coming in for Fall '23. I was also considering putting Nuevo West as my preferencial community. I have a lot of questions about housing- furnished or unfurnished? 2Be/4Be/6Be? Is off-campus housing cheaper in any way? Are there any restrictions imposed? If at all we could get in touch it'd be great :)

Hey, Ivan! Your vlogs are amazing. Do you live on campus or off campus? And what is the rent? I'm planning to apply at UCSD.

Hi Shifali, thank you! I am living in graduate student campus so technically on campus and I pay $690 for a shared apartment with a roommate.

@@IvanValdovinosGradSchool Hey Ivan, great vid, gives a good feel of how move in days can be. Could you please name which grad housing community you're at - I thought most grad housing appartments were two people a room (or close to $1,000 rent for a non shared room).

@IvanValdovinosGradSchool 2 года назад
@@sujay_hegde Hi, so the room rate changed. They actually raised the prices for incoming students. You can find the information on the grad housing website.

Usc is better or ucsd?
@IvanValdovinosGradSchool
@IvanValdovinosGradSchool 2 года назад
Hi, I cannot answer this question because I’ve never been to USC nor have I attended courses there. I would say that I am happy with my decision to attend graduate school at UCSD. Ultimately, it depends on the person and there needs to determine satisfaction with a school and/or a program.

Which community is this? Is it OMS?

It is OMS. Prices have increased since I started my program.
