"Another Columbus Sails West" is an historic silent newsreel showing the flight of the Graf Zeppelin dirigible on its first trans-Atlantic flight. LZ 127 Graf Zeppelin was a German-built and -operated, passenger-carrying, hydrogen-filled, rigid airship which operated commercially from 1928 to 1937. It was named after the German pioneer of airships, Ferdinand von Zeppelin, who was a count (Graf) in the German nobility. During its operating life, the airship made 590 flights covering more than a million miles (1.6 million km). It was designed to be operated by a crew of 36 officers and men It was scrapped for fighter plane parts in 1940.
In October 1928 the Graf Zeppelin made its first intercontinental trip, a 9,926 km (6,168 mi), 111 hour crossing from Friedrichshafen to Lakehurst with Dr. Eckener in command. Capt. Ernst Lehmann, who would be killed in the crash of the Hindenburg at Lakehurst eight and a half years later, served as First Officer on the flight and U.S. Navy LCDR Charles E. Rosendahl, commander of the ZR-3 USS Los Angeles (ex-LZ 126), made the westward journey during which he also stood watch as a regular ship's officer. Despite encountering heavy headwinds and stormy weather, Eckener had repeated the success of his first transatlantic crossing four years earlier when he delivered the LZ-126 to the U.S. Navy in October 1924 and was welcomed enthusiastically then both with a "ticker tape" parade in New York and a subsequent invitation to the White House.
As seen in the newsreel, a portion of the damaged fabric covering removed from the Graf Zeppelin in October 1928, after its first transatlantic flight from Germany to NAS Lakehurst, New Jersey. On this first transatlantic trip the airship suffered potentially serious damage to its port tail fin on the third day of the flight when a large section of the linen covering was ripped loose while passing through a mid-ocean squall line at night about 1,500 miles (2,400 km) east of Bermuda (35°N, 42°W).[22] With the engines stopped, the ship's riggers did their best to tie down the torn fabric to the framework and sew blankets to the ship's envelope while attempting not to fall to the raging seas below. In the interest of safety, the riggers (including Dr. Eckener's son, Knut) retreated back into the ship whenever it dropped to within a couple of hundred feet of the ocean's surface. This allowed the engines to be restarted to maintain lift.
The Graf crossed the U.S. coast at Cape Charles, Virginia, around 10 am on 15 October, passed over Washington, D.C., at 12:20 pm, Baltimore at 1 pm, Philadelphia at 2:40 pm, New York City at 4 pm, and landed at the Lakehurst Naval Air Station at 5:38 pm.[24] After an almost two-week stay in the United States, during which time its damaged tail was repaired, the Graf left Lakehurst for Germany at 1:24 am on 29 October and arrived back in Friedrichshafen shortly before dawn on 1 November.

They encountered a fierce storm mid-Atlantic that tore the fabric loose off of the rear stabilizer. Eckener's son, Knut, was among those that volunteered to try to fix it. They had to slow down to effect repairs. When they lost height & dropped down to less than 300 yards above the ocean, it was too late to tell the repair crew that it was suddenly going to get very, very windy as a result of picking up speed- endangering the repair crew. Including his own son. Luckily, it was managed & no harm came to anyone..... 🚬😎

Yes indeed sir, You have been an inspiration to me, here's the story (it is alot like yours) About 1 year ago I began staggering and if I was not careful I would fall down forward or/and backwards. I went to my VA hospital and received brain scans and blood draws, but they could not find the cause of my symptoms. I also went to Physical therapy sessions. My body has been healthy and dis-ease free since I was a boy and I figured it knew how to repair itself. About that time, I found your video's. You have such a clear way of describing your symptoms I bonded instantly and decided I would buy a bike and go pedaling on the American river bike trail every morning to strengthen my legs. I posted to my VET groups my plan of healing, and they gave me a lot of encouragement. My wife (TERRY.) was walking the trail often and was hot to get a bike and ride with me. I knew recumbent bikes were NOT cheap, but everybody agreed that if it helped my falling the expense was worth it, We decided a trike might be more helpful than a bike, So we invested in two catrike villiagers. MY ability improved 90% AFTER only three morning 7 mile peddles, of course I had to brag, even to strangers on the trail, next thing I knew, I lost about 50% of my newly won ability, Pride comes just before the fall) also I use a drug, a fungi (lyons mane) Its been about 10 days and I've gained back about 40% of my balance/ability but I learned to stop bragging and just go on with my therapy. I am looking forward to a complete recovery, but i guess its going to take a while. Bobcat Bob Ingram

I read that shortly after WW2, Commander Rosendahl visited Friedrichshafen, and found Dr. Eckener sitting on a bench in the park feeding pigeons.

This is absolutely incredible! Thank you. I am currently working on animations and trying to revive films like these. Is there someone I can contact about this? Your video archives are the best visual documentation we have on the actual past and I can't thank you enough for sharing this with rest of us. Take care and God bless you!

I was a video technician and worked on creating a database for Fox Movietone News. Also "British Pathe" documented much of the 20th century! I'm surprised you didn't get a response. have you tried contacting Periscope Films? I did do some restoration work of early NASA footage from the 60's and 70's that was recorded on videotape for a university TV station once.

About 25 years ago I was in my mother's front yard, on a sunny day, in Hurricane, West Virginia and a large shadow came over me. It scared the bejeebers out of me until I looked up and realized it was the Good Year blimp, so huge but quiet.

6:19 to 6:25- Is the small flying blob a bird closer to the camera (relatively speaking), or a small plane closer to the zeppelin?
@phantomstrangermedia

I think it is a bird - its relative movement seems slower than the aircraft more clearly seen at other moments.

That seems an odd route, via the madeira islands, very far south for transatlantic crossing. London to Arizona runs close to Greenland these days
@Hopgoodd

Maybe their route was planned and akin'd as a sailing boat, taking advantage of the trade winds.
@nofxslc

If you watch the footage closely, you’ll see their engines are shut down for most of their crossing. They were taking advantage of the jet stream winds which can be in excess of 150 knots.
@mickfunny4185

@@nofxslc I thought the entire concept of the jet stream was unknown to Western meteorologists until B-29s were flying over Japan in 1945. How would and Zeppelin pilot have known what the jet stream was?

It's the size of the Mauretania and just as fast, but what do you really get for all that? What was the payload of the Graf Zeppelin? 16 1/2 tons. A 10-wheel truck can carry more. And it was so fragile, and far, far more dangerous than even an LNG carrier. A work of genius, a beautiful ship and a great idea, but so very far from practical.
@MWGrossmann
@MWGrossmann Год назад
Your 10-wheeler ain't crossing the Atlantic on its own. That beast went from one side of the Pond to t'other in only 4½ smooth days. Of COURSE we're far and away more advanced 100 years later. But at the time…
