The Ski Sunday presenter talks us through his favourite runs while he skis them, in a new regular series of videos exclusively for Telegraph Ski and Snowboard, sponsored by Club Med.
First up is the Grand Couloir, a well-known run in Courchevel, France, which is ungroomed but technically counts as a piste as it's patrolled and avalanche-protected.

I love how Graham just casually blows by everyone as everyone else contemplates the life-or-death decision to go down the run.

Haha it's really not bad, wide, it's a really nice run when the snow it good, you can smash down it.

With poles in one hand and a GoPro in the other! 😲

The couloir itself doesn't scare me, it's the ridge you need to traverse to get to it! One day I'll be confident enough to do it :D

Judging from the video the couloir looks 3 times wider then it was was at Christmas

I was at the top once, looking down at that ridge but it was really icy. Then, all of a sudden, 6 local French guys went past me on my left, went under the fence rope and one by one, nose dived into the couloir on that side! Fine, I guess they were local. But, they couldn't have been more than 11 or 12 years old! Stunning!

Sounds like they went down the Tournier Couloir (Which appears to have been re-branded as "GoPro"). That's narrower and has a rather more "exciting" entry. Once you are past the ridge the entry to the Grand Couloir is really rather welcoming, with a ridge to stop at. Not so the Tournier. That's over the edge and a right turn that you have to make. Once in, it's not so bad. There are videos on RU-vid I would have loved to have tried both in the conditions in the video. We did them when they were skied out and fairly solid, dragged down by a mountain guide under the aegis of skiclub GB

I did this run about 30 years ago and once was truly enough. I ploughed for all I was worth down the first section.

Just hope no one decided to ski it after watching from the bottom how easy Graham made it look

It's actually pretty easy on fresh powder, but it definitely took me a bit more time to get down.

He did it is less then 2 minutes, and makes it look so easy to do.

Done that run so many times over multiple years and never seen it in as good condition as that, lucky sod!

I've had fresh powder on that run and 106cm wide skis and it was as easy as a normal piste

The last time I did this was a few years ago. There was some carnage with plenty of equipment left at the top of the couloir with the owners near the bottom. I skied it with three skis under one arm and five poles under the other (two of them being mine).

Graham came on one of my camera training courses many years ago. Really nice guy, and of course a slightly better skier than I am!

It’s the bit that follows the ridge at 0:50 that’s the hardest. I had my worst fall ever down that slope doing backwards somersaults narrowly missing rocks

Skied this years ago (in the 90s). Lack of fresh snow meant the narrow/"it rocky" part had moguls the size of Renault 5s. No opportunity to look cool as you pick your way down it.

How does he down hill where normal people have to turn round moguls etc. Amazing skill. Love watching Olympians in more "normal " settings as it shows the gulf between normal and gods

It`s not the run that scares me .... it is the short ridge traverse at the beginning with probable instant death either side before you get to the Couloir. I have looked at it so many times but just can`t summon up the balls to do it.

I love this run, it's one of my favourites. I remember flying myself in from the UK (a three and a half hour flight) and air traffic allowed me to pay the landing fee at the end of the day. That meant that I had half a day skiing and I spent a lot of my time doing the Grand Couloir (although at the time I thought it was part of what was called the Ugly Sisters). After my fifth run the slope was closed as the piste patrol had to deal with an incident on it.

looks awesome, if one can do Hintertux route 13 twice in 20 mins this Culoir is reasonable, only issue is approach part.

The run itself wasn't even that hard for me on good conditions, but it does take some courage to make it over that ridge at the beginning though.

Good technique, - though any of the runs coming off to the right or left of the "marked run" are far more challenging and impressive.

Damn, the first 100+ meters on top of that ridge is the thing of nightmares for me. Anyone know how far you'd drop if you went off one of the sides?

Kevin Enos apparently you will be first at the bar in merribel. Im going myself twice this season. First in december then in march. Wondering if i'll have the confidence to try it. Snow conditions make a massive difference tho. Think he was lucky on his run. Looks amazing tho.😁
@kbean63
@kbean63 6 лет назад
Michael Williams I'm sure I could snowplow my way through even the top part but there isn't much point to doing a run like that if you're not really skiing. It's like the one time I tried the Pali Lift at A Basin - I spent most of the time cursing myself for it.
@CapriCartier
@CapriCartier 6 лет назад
Kevin Enos hi mate, it’s around 90 Metres, but it falls into a powder hill. Only one part of the ridge is flat out drop either side, and that is truly terrifying. About a 50 metre drop on the Meribel side.
@3vimages471
@3vimages471 3 года назад
I have looked at that run so many times but I just don`t have the balls to do that top ridge traverse to get to the couloir. I don`t know if it is instant death if you fall off that ridge but it sure looks like it.
