In 1981 in HS Physics our teacher pulled out a 5 foot x 3.5 foot bed of actual nails. This experiment was to show how force is distributed over a large area where the pressure is decreased, as a person (the teacher) laid on this bed without injury. He then had a plywood board put on his chest and a volunteer would hit it with a sledgehammer, obviously under control. These were sharp nails close together separated by about 3/4 of an inch both horizontally and diagonally.

As someone who's 19, we were quite literally told we didn't need to learn cursive and we could do it at home if we really cared. But that's the same thing they told a lot of us about phonics too.😂

@@markluscombe4117 I had an electric typewriter at home. But when I took a typing class in 9th grade, in 1984-85, we had to use a manual typewriter. It took much more force to operate the keys on one of those than an electric model.

High School in the 80's was the best! I was a New Wave/Goth kid (still am I guess) the music in the 80's and MTV... best times of my life. OK, my 20's were pretty fun too. * I feel bad for the kids today, they are missing out on so much, with their faces stuck just looking at a phone.

I always thought that banging erasers thing was something they only did in movies for the longest time. We never did that. It was always the Teacher or the teacher's aid's job. I thought it was magic when I was younger because we would come back to school the next morning with a perfectly clean chalkboard. I also had Jellie shoes. Mine were sandals that were pink with silver glitter. They were my favorite shoes ever. I was also the kid with all the Lisa Frank stuff. My Aunt actually worked for Lisa Frank and she would mail me boxes of stuff all the time. I had every sticker and pencil, I still have my Ballerina Bunny wristwatch still in its case and Ballerina Bunny beach towel. It makes me so happy to see Lisa Frank coming back.

What would be really good is to fix up select school rooms as if they were in the 70’s or 80’s and let the kids of nowadays experience that - I do believe that they would actually learn a great deal especially about being self sufficient- so great to see y’all having so much fun with this one and one can really tell how much that you guys love one another 👍

I was born in 80 and was pretty lucky with my Highschool having some cool classes. By the time we were seniors and had enough credits to graduate they had extra fun classes for us. 1 class we went bowling and fishing and golfing. Another class we had was Movie class, we watched a new popular movie everyday. (most people just slept). And the coolest class we had was Radio. My school had it's own radio station and during class we used to learn how to Dj and after school we got to host the radio station. Good times!

I think that as an adult you know how hard life can be. As a child, you don't usually. One thing that children don't understand is that the bad things in school you'll never have to face again once you are on your own. You can avoid people, move away, etc. It may not happen immediately, but you have control to change your own life. However, conversely, the fun memories you had as a child can never be had again. The best you can do is discuss it or, now, watch videos that remind you of things you enjoyed from the past. Kat - my niece loved her "Jellies" (today, you can get a 3D printer to make them!). While hubby may think they look stupid, they look better than Crocs. It's odd that the video didn't mention covering textbooks with brown paper grocery bags (or xmas wrapping paper). The brown paper bags could take stickers all over them and other decoration, just don't write on it with a ball point pen (it put dents in the cover) and don't use ink that might soak through while it was on the book. Don't know if you know the story about Oregon Trail (computer game). It was one of the first "edutainment" games designed by the Minnesota Educational Computing Consortium (MECC) which designed games that were educational. Oregon Trail teaches about the crossing of people heading to Oregon to land granted to them by the government. It was not easy, and many people died along the way (many of dysentery). Anyway, each game taught the students how to plan, how to engage in focus and how to handle situations. Another popular game was Lemonade stand, where a student would "buy" sugar, lemons, cups and set a price. If they set a good price, glasses of lemonade would sell and generate profit. Too low and there might not be profit. Too high and there might not be sales. There were other factors like weather, running out of supplies and so on. MECC would be bought out and a lot of corporate crap ensued. HOWEVER, Oregon Trail and some form of Lemonade Stand are available today (probably even on your phone's app store). Great games. My mother used to like Lemonade Stand a lot to decompress. We all need "stupid games" that we can play without having to use our brain much.

15:30 The Oregon Trail is an old DOS game which can still be fun to play. There are several modern versions of the game out today. In real life, it was a 2000 mile journey from the midwest to the Pacific Ocean.

As an American, I use Fahrenheit every day. Because I had a scientific education, I understand metric units as a second language. I automatically convert Celsius whenever I encounter it. Five Celsius degrees are equivalent to nine Fahrenheit. Start at zero C and go up or down: -40 C = -40 F -35 C = -31 F -30 C = -22 F -25 C = -13 F -20 C = -4 F -15 C = 5 F -10 C = 14 F -5 C = 23 F 0 C = 32 F 5 C = 41 F 10 C = 50 F 15 C = 59 F 20 C = 68 F 25 C = 77 F 30 C = 86 F 35 C = 95 F 40 C = 104 F 45 C = 113 F 50 C = 122 F
@kevinerose
@kevinerose 3 месяца назад
I like to think C is good for science but F is good for humans. 0C = water freezes 100C = boiling point 0F = too cold to venture outside 100F = too hot to go outside
@brucew7062
@brucew7062 3 месяца назад
(C x 9/5) + 32 = F or (F - 32) x 5/9 = C. We had to learn these formulas in school and I still use them today as well as knowing that 0 C = 32 F (freezing) and 100 C = 212 F (boiling). American students should still be taught this if they aren’t.

32° is freezing in Fahrenheit. If it was in the 40s in Fahrenheit inside we'd have people in danger of dying from cold. 40° Celsius translates to 104° in Fahrenheit and it's getting there in the US too. Our temps here in the middle of the country are the same as yours right now. I graduated high school in 1983.
