Grahame Lesh and Brian Lesh guess the year of Grateful Dead live tracks as a team. I play five songs and their goal is to be 10 or fewer years off in aggregate. We also chat about Oteil vs Phil's approach to playing bass, how Grahame and Brian got turned on to the Grateful Dead, as well as the band's unusual time signatures.
Tickets are on sale now for Sunday Daydream Festival on 8/27/23 in Novato, CA. The festival features Phil Lesh & the Terrapin All-Stars, Melvin Seals & JGB, and more. Grahame and Brian are playing for shirts generously provided by officially licensed Grateful Dead designer Play Dead. The episode poster was drawn by 30k ft.

____________
Guess the Year is a Grateful Dead game show released as a podcast. In the game, five contestants Zooming in from around the country listen to a short clip from a Grateful Dead live track then guess what year the performance took place based on vocals, instrumentals, and song choice, each of which continuously evolved over the band’s thirty-year run of touring. The contestant who's furthest off is eliminated. The last Deadhead standing wins a prize pack of Grateful Dead inspired merch and is invited back the following week to defend their title.

These days Graham really holds down guitar and vocals in ways that will blow your mind. Hard to do with such big shoes to fill. I’ve heard Brian plays too, but Graham really developed stage presence with Midnight North, & really stepped into the Terrapin Allstars. We all have so much to be grateful for. The entire Lesh family kept the music going for us. i remember moving to the bay and being star-struck after my friend told me he met Matt Lesh at a show! ❤

This is very cool and wholesome. It’s always nice when famous musicians kids are into their music. I guess Sugaree 90’, Sugar Mag 74’ that was easy cause I’ve seen the Grateful Dead movie so many times lol. The Dylan Phil song I guess 94’ too. Eyes 76’, Box of Rain 73’. It tougher than I thought.. obviously there’s the tell of who’s on keyboards but other than that it’s hard to pin it down

First just wanna say HALLELUJAH BOYS… carrying it on! My 1st Dead concert 1973 so CLEARLY Im an old fan!! I LOVE this contest concept YOUVE got going on--I get em right about 80% of the time but WHO CARES … it’s just a good time!! On the Sugaree convo re Tempo… ever heard Chris Robinson’s cover of it? He pushes it of course & I THINK I’m a tough critic but I REALLY LIKE his versions. BTW, ever done a deep dive on Sugaree & discovered HOW MANY DIFFERENT COVERS of it there are out there? I was amazed. Also, wanna tell you that your dad’s song Box of Rain has ALWAYS been near the top of my playlist. AND one of my FAVORITE pictures ever of Jerry in concert--he’s looking at/playing to two little boys sitting on top of some equipment on stage. Ive always ASSUMED those boys were you two …. Could be wrong tho. Love to you all. “Reach out your hand if your cup be empty; if your cup is full may it be again”. Iowa Deadhead

You need to go back to class boys! We should be playing guess the show not the year!😃 I suppose I have an advantage having listened intently to this body of work on tape since you guys were knee high to an alligator. That and (perhaps pathetically) haven't spent much of that time listening to anything else much less learning how to play music like you guys! 😉 So here were my guesses: 1) 9-18-87 (got the 87 sound for sure and then just went for a popular 87 show from there) 2) 6-28-74 (crowd going wild says it all - dad threatened to call the fire marshal!) 3) 4-1-91 (again 91 sound and going for a popular date they played it on - come on guys - accordion can mean but one thing: BRUUUUUUUUUCE!) 4) 5-22-77 (unmistakable May 77 sound and went for the DP release option) 5) 5-26-73 (this tape is programmed into my DNA!) I give myself a C+. Two bullseyes, one on the same tour and two whiffs. I am not boasting; this is just the confession of an overly obsessed owner of a guilty pleasure - oh but what a pleasure! Say, can we make this game an ongoing thing?! Maybe call it "Head Games", "The Head is Right" (got to have a "closest guess without going over" rule for that one), or how about "Tapetionary" or maybe "25 bars or less" ... the options are endless! Thanks for the fun video and great way to structure an interview! Loved it - will play again!

It's all about keyboard sounds & Bobby tones to guess the '80's & '90's and helps with '60's too. '70's is two drummers or not and other tells like Bobby's instrument tones & whether Jerry is on the Strat or Wolf which is a bit more sproingy sounding that the strats. '60's is about Pig's keys, song choices, and guitar tones. But '65-'66 is fairly distinct. '67-'68 is fairly distinct, '69 is it's own year. '70 is transitional. '71 is tighter than '70. '72 is fairly distinct with more Strat tones. '73- '74 Wolf tones & of course no Mickey. '76 is 1st Bean and a bit looser & groovy. '77 is more tight power w/ 2nd Bean & new Bobby tones. '78 gets kinda loose again & back to modded Wolf. '79 -'84 might be toughest with mostly Brent keys sounds & Jerry's voice to go off.

2 keyboards worked just fine back in the late sixties and early seventies because Pigpen had the good sense not to play much when either TC or Godchaux was playing and switched to simple percussion instruments. However, Hornsby and Welnick sound like a horrible, muddy, synthetic, mess playing together. Of course, in retrospect, the Grateful Dead was most often absolutely horrible after July 1990, anyway. Btw, guessing what single year a song was played from just a snipet of a song is usually very hard because there usually some overlap in arrangement and band personnel. You really need to hear that song in the context of the entire concert to make a more educated guess because there are many other clues from the way other songs were played or not played songs that help date the show. The last song, Box of Rain, however is easy to date, though, because it was only played it in 73 with Keith and Donna...

I wish Phil and his wife would get over their animosity towards Steve Kimock. The best iteration of Phil and Friends was when Kimock played lead guitar. The April, 1999 shows were my favorite post-Dead. More enjoyable than Dead & Company IMO. Jerry and Phil were the true genius of the Dead. The others are excellent and contribute a lot, but genius lies with Phil and Jerry.
