Border View Farms is a mid sized family farm that sits on the Ohio-Michigan border. We raise corn, soybeans, and wheat on a little over 3,000 acres.
My name is Nathan. I run this channel and farm with my dad, Mark and uncle, Phil. I started making these videos in the fall of 2019 as a way to help show what I do on a daily basis as a farmer. I get questions about how and why we do things on the farm frequently, even from my own family members, so to help explain things it's easier to just show you. I hope that I can address questions or concerns that you might have about farms and agriculture in general as well as dispel some of the common misconceptions.
I hope you enjoy my content and please ask questions as you have them. I do my best to answer anything I can.
I appreciate you subscribing to my channel and liking my videos.
You can reach me through messages on Facebook or Instagram @borderviewfarms or by email bakernth@gmail.com. Please don't call my parents house!

For those that think farming is easy and little knowledge needed, need to watch this. Most people don't even know what 3 phase is. Making the most of what you have is what sets you apart., it's not what it used to be. Nice job with the family farm!

Im no farmer but can say I worked for a large feed and fertilizer company (Bruce Oakley) while in high school in the 90s. Cleaning out the drain at the base of the bins was just nasty! Fermented corn, dead rats and raccoons in that thing! Lol ohhh my I remember that job. God bless y'all thanks for all the work and the tour!

Great job explaining how the grain dryer works I’ve been curious about it forever. All I knew was that they use propane to make the heat, that’s an impressive setup ya got there!

Quite a grain handling facility you have there. I like the power split between generator and power company. Provides lots of versatility, and room for expansion.

WhoooWheee Nathan!!! I sure feel better now that you are back down on the ground. I wasn't so much worried about you,.....but I was getting more woozy the higher you were going!!! (Ha!Ha!) It is amazing how a person can be sitting in a chair, and get that woozy feeling from watching a video. I do not do good with heights. Thanks for the tour.

Nathan - outstand job with both the video and planning for the bin system. Seems very complex and productive. Question: Who did the planning and design for this complex, especially the electrical. Both you and your dad must have in-depth knowledge of electrical systems. Very impressive - looking forward to part 2
@BorderViewFarms
@BorderViewFarms 3 года назад
Mostly my dad. We have hired an electrician a couple time when we did some major upgrades but have found they they generally cut corners and we've had to redo a lot of it ourselves anyway.

Very nice set up. I watch all these farming channels and I think this is the best set up I have seen. Brian's farm channel has a nice set up and the mil. farmer but he has dryer problems a lot,,,, maybe an older system. Much better than Cole the corn star but they are upgrading soon.

Wow. Thanks for the elaborate tour. Where I come from, these private facilities are non existing, every farmer unloads their grain, corn or whatever at co-op facillities. That being said, mostly sugar beet, potatoes, wheat around here... corn is mostly for cattle feed. It must cost a fortune not only to build your own grain bin facility but to run it also... Thanks again Nathan.

That was a lot to take in, in a good way. Worthy of a second viewing. How do the diverters work, switching? Other farmers seem to have diverter issues, getting corn to the correct gravity pipe/bin/dryer. Sorry for your wife's loss.

Impressive. Especially the electrical. If you lose power on your 400 amp 240 volt system that runs the fans, can you switch that over to generator power?

I never hear any farmers talking about the flighting for the grain bin legs. How after does the flighting in those need replacement? They seem to move twice as much material as a combine maybe even more.

doesn't the side draw cause uneven levels in the bin. Won't the uneven levels in the bin cause bin failure. I thought that way they have a center draw to keep the levels even

Hey Nathan. I did not know you could run 3 phase motors off of a single phase grid. Interested in doing that myself to possibly run fans one day. Is it worth it to do that conversion to run a 3 phase fan or just easier to put a single phase one on? Very good video. Cheers
@BorderViewFarms
@BorderViewFarms 3 года назад
There's a couple ways to do it. Either rotary phase converters like we have or using VFDs. If you need bigger than 10hp motors its a good option.

@BorderViewFarms
@BorderViewFarms 3 года назад
Well there a lot that could be improved on but some smaller things I would like to change would be a tower instead of the guy cables, a second overhead bin, bigger/2 pits that would hold a whole semi load.

No thats a huge advantage with the mixed flow style, there aren't any screens to clean and its low maintenance in season.

Nathan - at 21:20 in this video you show a panel labeled "1 Phase 240 volts" Question - is there any 110 volt breakers in that panel??
@BorderViewFarms
@BorderViewFarms 3 года назад
Yes it has the lights and outlet circuts in it as well.
@markgibson3050
@markgibson3050 3 года назад
@@BorderViewFarms- the correct label for that panel would then be "Split Phase 110/120 volts". There is NO 240 volts single phase in that panel. (You can drive 220/240 volt devices out of a 110/120 volt split phase panel by using both 110/120 volt legs but it does not contain 240 volts in a single phase)

I know it’s kinda personal but how much does a setup like that cost because we’re thinking about putting a couple news bins and a dryer and just trying to get a good price on them
@BorderViewFarms
@BorderViewFarms 3 года назад
It wasn't cheap but has been upgraded/expanded over a long period of time. I would guess it would take somewhere between $500,000 and $1,000,000 to build that from scratch.

With the storms in Iowa this summer, price out a Sukup 1500000 bin now. Its almost double plus the wait time. U would be over a mil for the same setup.

Veryru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-GBMUifNifpw.htmlo good video, thanks. The business about lack of mains electrical power has clearly been a major pain in the neck although having your own generator does provide you with a fair degree of independence, especially in the event of a mains power failure / interruption of supply. Does the grain leaving the dryer emerge hot / warm or is it possible to cool it sufficiently before exiting the dryer? - I suppose that the crux of the situation is how wet is it entering the dryer and how much wet corn you have backed up in the wet grain bin together with your rate of harvesting.
@BorderViewFarms
@BorderViewFarms 3 года назад
The bottom 2 tiers of the dryer are below the burner so they are a cooling section. Grain comes out about 10-20* above ambient temp.
