For the seniors; if you check your TSC may also have a seniors day once a month and give 20% off. The one near me does. Even so the Farmers Co-op is cheaper to buy most food from in my area. Every area is different though. But as usual Frank is right, we don't have to pay the highest prices to get good quality food.
I must check on Senior Day for Tractor Supply. Great tip. Maybe it is 60 and above. You are right that we do not need to spend extra for off season feed.
I live in the North Island of New Zealand thanks Frank your videos are very cool. What are your thoughts on GPS rings racening there's some races on RU-vid from here done with GPS I will try to add a url here.
We here are metric so it's around 80 miles short race! Frank what clocking system do you use ? I have a Little Bricon with a twin ring scanner in my loft!.
Yes Frank , they still have some issues here with signal lands so wide spread through gullies and mountains. The Rings will eventually be smaller in size yes. Thanks for your comment Frank.
just so you know... if you have a bit more money to spend... at TSC (and other places) there is a brand of chicken pellet from nutrena? (never trust my spelling or memory) and one specific variety called "feather fixer" it has oregano oil in the pellets, is 18% protein i think? anyway i prefer it to the plain pellets, but yes it costs a bit more. also its cheaper to buy whole corn at a feed mill, BUT the corn at TSC is higher quality usually.
Wow this is tempting… I get a 50# bag of Purgrain breeder/conditioner mix from my dealer in Biddeford, ME for $22.00; but Tractor Supply is much closer to me in Westbrook, ME. When I run out I might try this..,
Wow, that is going to help a lot of people so I thank you I even though I don't have pigeons. We do however feed a feel hen and have tried to feed her a feed that has a bunch of different stuff in it, bit she won't touch the corn. We have her on a layers pellet and O don't think she is happy about that either but she does show up most days when we feed the horses. I think that the plethora of stray kittens eat most of it. Just cannot feed 15 wild kittens right now. Any suggestions would be appreciated if you know anything about chickens. When I first had these horses dumped on me a guy helped me out by showing me how to mix different grains to save money on horse feed. People really need all the help they can get right now, so again, thank you and may blessing rain on you from our beloved Creator- YHWH.
Hi Sandra, I keep and breed chickens also. If you feed chicken pellets exclusively the pellet makers want the chickens to eat a huge amount of the pellet. The chickens will gorge on the pellets. I give my chickens a small feeding of whole corn each day and they will reduce the overall intake of pellets.
@@FrankMcLaughlinPigeons Thanks for getting back with me. I apologize that I didn't read the text after I sent it. The chicken (1) is ferel and I don't mind the cost if a 25 pound bag once a month. She is looking better then ever. I wish she would eat corn but she only ate the little round brown seeds out of the mix. I just want to ensure that we are doing right by her. But it looks like we will be moving the horses so I don't know what will become of her and all her ferel kitty friends
Check out this video. I have a chicken pellet feeder and a grain feeder in front of them along with the minerals and grits. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Jm2DyiOH96M.html
Thank you for these amazing videos frank they help me a whole lot especially when it comes to all the years of trial and error I get to avoid by watching your videos and you telling me exactly what I need to do thank you again 🙏🏼🏆🧬🪽🪽
This is my off season mix. The pigeons are not paired at this time and just waiting for breeding season. I use Versele Laga Champion mixed with Versele Laga Energy when I am breeding.
Interesting. This is basically the same feeding regime that the late Charlie Hubbs used for his Rollers. Charlie started breeding in 1927 and continued until his death in about 2005. Instead of mixing whole corn with pellets, he offered the pellets free choice in a permanent feeder and fed the whole corn once daily.
I think that may work. I worry if we fed the breeders like Charlie they may wait and eat mostly corn but who knows. The pigeons may instinctively know the babies need more protein and minerals from the pellets.
@McLaughlin Lofts Well, probably one advantage Charlie had is that Rollers are not big fans of whole corn. I have what may now be the last large stud of Charlie's line and they seem to take to it better than my own line does. My Homers seem to think the stuff is candy, so I think if it wasn't mixed, they might pig out on the corn and do their best to disregard the pellets. Before the availability of pellets, he actually fed a high protein turkey mash with the whole corn. He is about the only breeder I've ever heard of who did such a thing, but it apparently worked well enough that when Charlie was a Pigeoneer in the Signal Corps he insisted that they supply him with the turkey mash. One observation I have had on pellets is that need a lot more water than they do if they're on grain only.
I feed this only off season. My breeders get the best when they are rearing young. Usually Versele Laga Champion with a feeder also full of chicken pellets and plenty of minerals to raise super babies.
How's the Producers Pride working for you? A lot of the RU-vid homesteaders are complaining that the Producers Pride is causing their Chickens to stop laying recently. I've seen several videos about this feed pop up just in the last week.
