Gramophone Restoration. His Master's Voice. 

I've never seen somebody work so hard to restore a reproduction, that's tenacity! You probably made this thing better than it ever began. Most of those things didn't work right off the shelf with such a hodge-podge of parts from different machines. Good for you.

If you dont move the arm back into right position, you are gonna have a swell vinyl grinder, and not a music player, needle is going the wrong way.

Next time squeeze the gramophone arm on the other side to avoid scratching the vinyl record and to make it sound better

Can't go wrong with a gramophone boasting both RCA and Columbia labels. I kept waiting for a shock from one of the amplifier's capacitors.

What a bodge up. This should be called how not to restore a gramophone. Just because you can wield a screw driver & a hammer (a lot of that going on) doesn't mean that you can restore things. He didn't take the spring out of the barrel & disassembled the motor without making sure that the spring was run down.

This is a fake made in India in recent years. You will find dozens of them for sale on eBay for around 80 to 120 pounds. You can also find them being bought for hundreds of pounds from unscrupulous people who sell them as original. They are made by taking the workings from a defunct Gramophone and building a new case around them. The angle of the winding handle on this one indicates that this motor came from a portable. Without that angle there would not be enough height on a portable to clear the surface the machine is sat on. Gramophones did not have brass horns. The manufacturers quickly realised that brass on a Gramophone horn just made it sound tinny. Cheaper machines had tin plated steel, more expensive machines wood. Unfortunately these fakes are so common now that people believe the authentic sound should be tinny. Keep the motor out of this one and bin the rest of it. Buy yourself a real one.

Good effort, great to watch. Also interesting to see just how badly made those Indian fakes really are.

Great Restoration! But! The sound box with needle is suppose to play from the right side not left. Pluss, It's for 78 RPM records not vinyl microgroove records.

That was amazing job, the only thing that I wasn't very sure that I like it was the wooden body, it need more car to hide the years pass on it, I know you did a fine job for the all parts and I loved it, the wood body needs more work, or, maybe use a modern Ideas like using a cars paints with any color you want, nice job my friend.

The diaphragm in the reproducer needs to be replaced. This one won't sound very good or loud. It's easy to find a new replacement. Personally I would give it a bit more stain, and finish off with lacquer, but of course that's your decision. But besides that now all you need is to go out and get some really cool 78's, and a good stack of needles. An old bastard like that will keep the party going, even if a solarstorm knocks us back to the stoneage.

With all due respect but if you know how a Gramophono works, if you check your video, you will realize that you have just spoiled your Disk since I put the needle on the wrong side causing your disk to scratch. the needle is placed from the center to the right side not from the center to the left side because by the inclination of the needle instead of just caressing the disc and following the engraving on the acetate and catching the undulations made, you just put the needle in the opposite direction causing the tip instead of stroking the acetate to scratch and deform the engraving. Not everyone is a restorer, that is clear to me. To buy a new disc and the parts that are damaged or broken are replaced in a restoration or a restoration is really done in which the pieces remain functional.

Great job of restoration, and you got all those tiny pieces back together. Well done, I hope it brings you much enjoyment.

At least the reproduction ones use a cheap brass horn so we can all immediately tell they aren't genuine His Masters Voice

In my humble opinion, you should have just restored the mechanism and left the horn and wood cabinet alone. The thing is old; it should look old. But I enjoyed watching the video and seeing how those old phonographs worked.

New subscriber here , I love this! I can say that with confidence after binge watching your vids all afternoon. I have two original gramophones ready to repair in my garage. Even though this is definitely a fake gramophone, it does look to have some quality components in it. The motor could be out of a decent HMV portable, and the tonearm looks to be from a portable too. I have the base unit from a much more modern similar fake. Mine looks much the same, but all the parts are recently made, including the motor and the quality is noticeably inferior

Good work and nice looking player. Really decorative and I would not mind having one buy never play any recirds newer than 1930 they are not ment to be played on steel needles. Wasn't a problem back then because record shops were in every corner and costed 15 cents.

I use apple cider vinegar and salt - warmed in the microwave- and then left overnight to get rust off my outdoor stuff; works a treat and isn't likely to remove my skin if I drip it on myself. lol! I will say the cabinet doesn't look finished - it needs another couple of coats of stain and then some satin varnish or clear lacquer over it.

Absurd spectacle of errors. I have restored many actual Victrolas, and I believe that you should leave such things to skilled people who know how they should actually be played, at least.

great detailed Restauration/repair I like it! the only sad thing is the gramophone is a fake, not the usual India fake but one probably from Afghanistan India fakes have fake motors as well very bad repro's of the Garrard no 20 motor. this one has an original motor of the type HMV used to make and use in the portable models 87 and 88 however this is a USSR Russian copy of such a motor from the 1940s to 60s thus I came to the conclusion that this is an afghani machine. as Crap-O-Phones go this is a better one the soundbox is real the motor is real so the sound will be very much better than the usual India crapo, eh, that is, if you place the tone-arm on the opposite side of the record and use a 78rpm record. also visit my channel to learn more about the wonderful world of antique gramophones/phonographs.

I would caution that in practice, it's not necessary to disassemble the motor as far as was done here. Just disassemble enough to thoroughly clean and lubricate the mechanism. Plus, I liked the patina on the horn before it was scrubbed off.

Stain job could've been better. And a high gloss lacquer finish would have made it look high class, just personal opinion on aesthetics.

nice work, looks realy good.only csome recomandations, make sure you oil the leather of the break of the gouverner wheel, speedregulator, and also clean the spring that is in the spring housing and use new grease (I always use lithium grease) . than the speed will be much better and constant . also place the arm in the correct possition ( on the right side, not the backside) for the soundbox( where the needle is attached, you can use a drop parafinewax to seal the screw of the needle to the membrame complete airtight, this give an imroved sound quality .

Good morning. I'm not a specialist, but I think you did a good job with the mechanical part of this machine. On the other hand, I'm sorry to say, the wooden crate is downright missed. No one at the time would have spent a lot of money, because it cost a lot, in something like that. The wood should be either waxed or varnished. Leaving the wood like that is a good mistake. You have to make up and redo the cash register. Also for the copper part you have to make it sparkling. That's how it was back then. When you do a restoration the goal is to make it as it was when it was made. The drawing of the wood should be covered with paint and varnished. I hope my comment did not offend you because that was not my intention.
