Hey hey hey, welcome back to the channel. Thanks again for joining us. This episode we got a new tool. To bad we broke it within an hour. It has a minor flaw from the factory, but don't worry we get it fixed up better then ever. Full review of Grampa's Weeder, tear down and rebuild. It's a simple hand tool made of metal and wood. Its purpose is to easily remove weeds from your yard without bending over, kneeling or using chemicals. It's a great product and im very happy with its performance. But it does need a bit of improvement. Hope y'all enjoy the video. Check out my other videos, I do gaming, motivational speaking, reviews, landscaping, volunteering and random projects. I like to help people and share my experience with everyone. We only get one life, so we might aswell think positive and live the most positive lifestyle we can. Later, PEACE! :)
Correction: It was $42 on Amazon.

I repaired one of these for a coworker. The handle cracked just above the metal socket of the digging head end. I lathe turned a new ash handle to tightly fit the socket. Upon looking at the original handle I discovered it was made from laminated bamboo strips similar to the method to make those beautiful segmented fly fishing rods. Hopefully the ash wood will take the torque better than the bamboo did.

What size is the diameter? My handle cracked but I don't have a lathe. Would a shovel replacement handle work?

Hello. Good work. The handle is definitely the weak point. Even after I repaired, it is showing signs of the something happening. What it really needs is a decent thickness steel pipe welded to the head. But head is probably mixture of many metals, which would make it difficult. But can't win them all. Lol. Thanks for your support and kindness. Take care, later. PEACE! 🙂

@@sweetbailey6315 I think something causing the handle to weaken is the rocking back and forth when pulling the weed out. Try pulling back just in one motion.

Dont worry about the dirt it pulls out. People actually pay to have thier yard "aerated" twuce a year. I used to until I bought an aerator. Decompacting the soil is great for your lawn as it absorbs more water.

I've had mine for years. Hasn't broken yet. (knock on wood) 🤣 Make one smooth lean to the side to pull it out. Don't jiggle it around. It's OK to leave the little hole. It's like plugging your lawn.

I use my foot pedal to the side. Just plug the holes with dog poo. Thank you for sharing. It was very satisfying. Yea, I have a dandelion problem too. Thanks!!!

Hello and Good morning! thanks for your support and kindness. I'm glad you enjoyed my video. I only used the tool one day in my yard. Then applied "weed n feed". Now there is literally no weeds. I was super surprised at how little effort can go such a long ways. I left the holes open, good aeration. Your welcome, take care. Later,PEACE! 🙂

Another way is to remove handle, put epoxy in the socket and perhaps better bolt!

Thanks for the video. I was wondering about changing the handle and this helped to see how it is assembled. I want to get a kinder handle for it since I’m 6’8” tall.

Hey Jon. Glad you enjoyed the video. It's super easy to change handle, I just recommend using a bigger screw to attach it. Phillips heads tend to stripe out, I like the torq bit heads. Yes, exactly! Make the tool work better for you. Thanks for your support and kindness. Take care. Later, PEACE! 🙂

You're not supposed to rock back and forth on the stick like that that's why it broke you're supposed to lean back with one swift move
@fakiirification
@fakiirification 2 года назад
would do the same thing. it looks like the manufacturer is using a simple tenon cutter to shape the ends of the handles meaning there is no wedging action. its just held in by the screw. this fix is how it should be shipped from the factory. the screw would be sufficient with a tighter fit in the pocket.

what you can also do with the wedge idea is cut a thin gross grain slot. and just get the wedge started in it. then put it down in the socket and carefully pound the handle in. the socket will drive in the wedge and crush the wood between the wedge and the socket sides. may have to burn it out to get it back off, but thats the whole idea isnt it?

hi: this gives me an idea: I used to go around and gather dandellion seeds to try to grow it as a vegetable. . . . However, I think if I had this tool, I can go around and gather full plants of dandellion and take them home. Maybe after a few weeks or months (to let the chemicals wash out), I can start eating the new growth leaves (ie not eat anything that is old leaves because I don't know if there are chemicals). This video inspires me to think of this new idea! I like eating dandelion and other people hate their dandelion. So, I think we can complement each other well.

Oh dear, yes. Thats why I didn't get the fiskars, heard to much bad about that particular fiskars product. But other fiskars are awesome, just avoid ones with to much plastic.
@MichaelCampbell01

Thanks for sharing that; I was really torn on this vs the Fiskars due to it being able to eject the weed. I chose this one for its simplicity.

Same here.... but within 10 minutes of use. The lever (not the fork) broke off making it unusable. Looks like its made of caste aluminum. I don't think it's fixable. I purchased it on Amazon and when reviewed my purchase for refund, the vendor information was not available.

Hello, I'm sorry that happened. Almost nothing is properly made anymore. The world is full of greed. So they design cheap products to fail. Be careful and take care. Later, PEACE!

The handle in the video appears to be bamboo as you can see where the bamboo knuckles were smoothed off. A hardwood such as ash would work better. After all bamboo is relative of the grass family. There is no wiggle with the ash handle replacement if it is carefully trimmed down to just bigger than the socket. I used a lathe and then a wood file to trim. I had to clamp the tool in a vice to drive the handle back in. A little paraffin wax helps to get the head to fit. No wedge was needed.

What’s the sense of getting a weeding tool with a long handle and you still need to bend down? The Fiskars automatically, with a pump, dislodges the weed. I’ve never had any issues with my Fiskars, and it’s not all plastic.
@pokerchannel6991

I looked at pictures of the fiskar and thought the plastic would break. I need metal. I am thinking about either the garden weasel or the grandfather's

Hello again. Sorry for slow response, didn't see other comments. Yes, the fiskars have bad reviews. They say the plastic breaks easily. I love fiskars products and they have awesome customer service and warranties. But that weed puller, is almost there only product I won't buy. Anyways, I agree. The grandfather's weeder is a solid product. I recommend it to anyone. Take care. Later, PEACE! 🙂

I love Fiskars as well but their weeder has too many moving parts (mostly plastic) for me to really trust it. For the Grampa's, it's just the metal head and the handle - and if it breaks, you just go get a new handle from the hardware store.

You can just wrap a piece of paper towel a few times around the wooden stick or around the metal part then stick it back in. problem solved. :)

Hello, your welcome. I enjoy helping people that appreciate it genuinely. I think the other person that commented is correct. It should be one quick swift motion. Not a rocking motion as I do. Hello, someone else said the same thing. That is wild. I'm very sorry. I very much dislike that companies are doing things like that. The people in this world are getting so greedy. It's absolutely disgusting. Contact them and demand they send you the handle. That is more then fair, if they don't. Then leave a bad review and tell everyone how horrible that company is. We need to stand up for whats right. It's the right thing to do. I'm sorry this happened to you. Stay positive and take care. Later, PEACE! 🙂
