The Barranco de Barafonso, or Antelope Canyon, is located in Gran Canaria. Travel 2022. Travel Vlog
Mini Gran Canyon,
From the Barranco de las Vacas comes the Barranco de Barafonso (barranco is a Canarian word for valley). Short, narrow slot canyons formed by water through soft volcanic ash or tuff veins are common in this region. Ochre and scarlet hues and smooth curving walls make it a must-see for anybody interested in architecture.
Also known as Tobas de Colores d'El Barranco d'Las Vacas, it's quite an extensive name, to say the least.
What is the location of the Barranco de Barafonso, if it exists?
When driving between Agüimes and Temisas, notably around Kilometer 14, you'll see this sign. The quickest route is to take the road from Agüimes to Temisas and drive until you reach this bend.
On the historic Camino Real route between Agüimes and Temisa, the diversion to a canyon isn't clearly marked.
You may park your automobile around 150 feet before the curve in the road, where there is enough for two vehicles. Walk till you reach a turn in the road heading towards Témiscas from here on out. On the road's seaward side, a dirt path leads to the barranco.
To go to the bottom of the valley, you'll have to descend 100 steps to get there. The slot canyon is about 200 metres up the valley after you travel through a tunnel on the way in. After another 200 metres of travelling, you'll come to a dry waterfall where you'll be stuck unless you're an experienced climber.
Barranco de Barafonso: Things to Do
There isn't much to do but wander about and take pictures in this tiny, tranquil setting (for the time being, at least). In the sky, you may spot kestrels and other native birds, as well as an occasional raven or buzzard.
The canyon has just lately been rediscovered by hikers and Instagram followers, but it's apparent that it was widely known by shepherds a long time ago. As you near the end of the canyon, there are footholds (complete with long nails) dug into the west wall and many points where you can see ancient holes cut into the soft rock that used to hold up shelters.
