GT2 really holds a special place. It's so insanely elegant from the menu system, the menu sounds, the soundtrack and the racing itself.

I remember holding the game for the first time and how heavy it was. The cover was so clean and grown up and shiny and I wanted to collect every car. This game made me more tidy of a person I think lol

and yet, despite the bugs, it was more complete than 90% of the garbage put out the doors today. We could really learn a thing or two from old school gaming

the track of license test with toyota gt one is a mirrored version of eau rouge and raidillon. and if you finished 1st in a difficult race like gt world championship and endurance with a car that has hp much lower than the max power restriction (-50 hp to -100 hp), or a car with lower hp than your opponents in a non-power restriction race, you can get a rare reward car, that won't be available if you use op cars like escudo or mercedes clk dtm. reverse track competition can be found in the gt mode disk as well, they are more common in makes cups,

The PAL release in the UK definitely had the scratch and sniff disc for GT mode.

I remember playing GT2 as a fourteen-year-old kid and just being absolutely obsessed with the game. Everything that Gran Turismo did Gran Turismo 2 did better in bunches. I love how you're using the sound effects from the game as scenecuts.

Songs looping in racing games back in the day was pretty common-- i think it was a ram limitation. It happens in Test Drive 6 as well.

This game is responsible for turning me into a petrolhead. The predecessor also responsible, but I spent much more time playing GT2. I remember that I raced the 2-hour endurance race of Rome (99 laps) from 6 PM to 8 PM with the Escudo Pikes Peak, only stopping for dinner along the way. And I was still around 9-10 years old boy back then.

This game was like an encyclopedia of the automotive world. Whenever you feel like acquiring some knowledge about cars, you start browsing the tuning menu as well as reading the history of the car makes. Such an enjoyable racing experience to date in spite of the graphics and the physics.

The cars in gt 2 still stands out, so many unique cars as well as daily cars that we don't get to see in games anymore. I miss driving the espace f1 and driving a 3 series bmw and other cars that aren't at the peak performance of the brand. Also the racing conversions were always fun to try out.

This is still my favourite game of all time. I honestly don't know how many hours I've spent playing it. It takes pride of place on my gaming shelf. In fact, the urge to play it right now is very strong.

What many say is the best game of the entire series, Gran Turismo 2 broke boundaries in racing gaming and the PS1.

The first video you made of GT2 gave me enough motivation to revisit the game in 2020. I played it to 100% (PAL) completion on emulator. The enhanced graphics option provided by Duckstation were a real treat, and made the game feel fresh, make me feel like my kid self again, like it was the year 2000. I had an absolute great time with it.

Excellent Review Bro, also you can play GT2 at true 60 fps alongside using a mod named "GT2 Plus" which let's you use cut content cars among other things.

What this game managed to achieve at that time is insane

I just re-played GT1 a few months ago, everything was fine and dandy till I got to two of the license tests, one was with the skyline on trial mountain and the other one was with the supra on deep forrest raceway... I went for gold on every test, every other test I managed to get gold first or second try but not on those two, I shit you not I had to watch a youtube video on the skyline one because driving on the racing line, braking perfectly before the corners wasn't good enough, turns out you had to powerslide through corners which would normally be slower and always keep the car on the inside of the corner and not going from an angle to hit the apex, basically throw the slow in fast out method out the window, as it turns out GT1 isn't really " the real driving simulator ". Anyway, it was good fun after all those years.

2:28 Not just the HKS Drag 180SX, but there was an HKS R33 Drag GT-R, a racing modification for the Dodge Intrepid ES which looks very much like a drag racing car (also drag racing the Intrepid irl seems to be quite popular in its cult following), and a cut HKS Celica that never made it into any version of the game that we have access to. There were 4 cars (that we know of) planned for this mode, 3 still in the game by release. And all of those 3 cars can do other things, mostly in arcade mode, notably the 180SX can do the first event of Gran Turismo All-Stars in simulation mode and the R33 might be able to. The Intrepid can do whatever you want really because it has no set power, with it's max being 505 BHP and it's minimum being the stock 223 BHP. 3:03 As far as I can tell, that's intentional. I don't know why the AI doesn't drive for a bit and then you start, but that's how they did it. 5:53 That is probably also intentional. It would take a while for the idea you're bringing up to catch on, also not helped by the fact that the Japanese version has all (or at least a crushing majority of) original music tracks for the races. 6:40 That is almost definitely a mistake. There's no reason I can think of except for rushing the game and forgetting about it that would explain why a Castrol Mugen NSX '98 can race against Plymouth Superbirds, Dodge Vipers, Chevrolet Camaros, Ford Mustangs, and Shelby GT350s in a series labeled "Muscle Car Cup". 15:30 Not just that, but at least one track (Rome Night) is never defined for any event, only showing up in simulation mode sometimes through the undercooked event generator, and manufacturer races, and I'm not sure it's the only track that falls victim to this. I'm sure this comment seems nitpicky, but it's just because I love the game so much and just happen to know a lot of this stuff.

Watch as this video goes disgracefully underrated, great and honest work as always Colourshed. There's something that I'd want to add that grinds my gears big time but don't know how big of a problem it is: Its unsung ifluence. Gran Turismo 1 and 2 are in my opinion one of the most impactful titles in gaming history, but most, if not almost all, throw it in the bin and dismiss it just because it's not something like Metal Gear Solid, Final Fantasy VII or even Ocarina of Time, Smash Bros and Mario 64. It's just incredibly unfair and off-putting to me, why is GT less inportant than those games? Just because it's vroom vroom car go fast??? I completely understand the opinion on one genre or type of game not being to someone's liking and that's completely acceptable and to be expected, but Gran Turismo has just felt so abusively neglected by the gaming community just because it's not Mario 64 even though it's just as influential as that gane technically, mechanically AND commercially. Apart from smaller content creators like you which are a godsend, the only big creators that I've seen that recognise and appreciate influential racing games as much as we do is Modern Vintage Gamer and LGR which I think should say something about how unfair and abusive the gaming climate is for us. At lwast we're all joyous and grateful of having each other to appreciate these landmark games in history.

This game had an insanely rushed development cycle, but still turned out insanely good even though there are tons of bugs. The only bug that really bothers me is how the fastest time doesn't update in GT Mode like it did in the first game. It sucks that it only updates in Arcade Mode. Outside of that minor complaint, this is a fantastic racer, and my favorite in the genre. There are so many cars and great tracks, rally races, and quick ways to earn money. It's incredibly easy to sink hours upon hours into this classic and still want to play more.

The timeless remix of My Favorite Game by Faithless is a song glued into my brain from the intro sequence. The escudo pikes peak... A mustard mica B4 Legacy on Midfield... These are cherished memories.

This is the best game ever made

Back when GT used to be good. Now the games are stripped of content and are just shells. I remember kid me playing GT1 and being absolutely blown away by the depth (even though I didn’t have a clue what most of the tuning stuff meant, although I learned what it meant because of this this franchise).

I just started playing this again, my scathing hatred for some of the decisions on the newest GT game did, never the less, create a scratch to be itched for this series. This game is really fun. The graphics are, maybe in the last couple years, FINALLY catching up with it's age. They don't detur from the fun but it is hard to say they aren;t noticable compared to the PS2 games. Pros: Craptons of cars. Many of them never got brought back in the series later. Kaz' personal opinion of a car is not nearly as noticable in this entry in the series. Sounds are top notch, especially for the era. If you don;t believe me, you never had an original PS1 with the good sound chips hooked to a good home stereo. Music tracks have not been equaled in any game since. Economy is totally manageable. (hint: buy a used 91 Nissan skyline, you can use it for like half the events in the game and it costs like 7500) Cons: The physics engine is not quite there. I don;t know if it is the engine, or the way they programmed the drivetrain in the cars or both.... FR cars can be very squirrelly, 4wd cars are pretty dang stable. And the thing of it is, the slowest cars won;t show it, race cars won;t, but the middle- the 250-350HP cars, you can notice at around the 100mph mark, it's like the physics engine can detect the segments of track programmed. because the emphasis on weight transfer from elevation changes(uphill/downhill) when the physics detects the "crack" in the segments the back of your car looks like it is trying to twerk like MIley Cyrus, which of course impacts how it handles corners etc. And there is, especially on FR cars, this wierdness where the physics engine decides at some point the rear of the car MUST be in front of the front of the car, no matter what is happening, what inputs you use(or none) and there is no way to stop it. I slid my 99 Cobra Mustang sideways all the way down the first two bends in the road(after corner 1) on the Grundewald track trying to counter out a spin(due to Ai contact weirdness) it was totally rediculous, I paused the game I was laughing so hard. It's not so common as to affect gameplay, but I don;t recall this happening in GT3. Rome circuit will be playable with your eyes closed its ;ike half the events I swear. "Catch up" AI is still here and noticable. And can be really annoying when that VW Lupo somehow manages to be right on your ass despite never catching you the whole race because you have a 350HP car...... yes, the "catch up" AI can cheat that hard. It's not up to Test Drive 5 levels but it is noticable and out of place in a sim game. Overall this game is a gem and between this and GT3 are my favorites, hands down of the whole series.

You have to rub the actual "GT Mode" script on the disc to smell the rubbery goodness.

Reverse tracks in GT2 are used in the Manufacturer Events. I don't know why they didn't use them for other races.

The first game I ever played. I managed to 100% last year and it was a blast to play. Even though this game isn't a RPG, it does feel like one when I play it which is probably why I like it so much.

Using Horsepower to clasify cars was super silly, I remember a fully modded Mini being OP AF, meanwhile Muscle cars and AMGs being not the best choices.

Are you re-reviewing all the GT's? If so, you are providing me a huge amount of nostalgia from my childhood. GT2 all the way to GT5 was the main games I remember spending the most time in. If you're doing GT3, I'll definitely be there for that, that one was my favorite, because there was nothing graphically comparable at the time, almost thought the cars looked real. Throwback story: My dad was tired of taking me to the boys and girls club to watch me play basketball, so he offered me a video game in exchange for quitting... and I ended up getting GT4. Best offer ever lmao.

One thing you haven't experienced is getting a prize car for all golds in Gran Turismo 1, 2 and 3. Gran Turismo 1 and 2 had exclusive gift cars for doing so, as does GT4.

I remember doing apricot hill or whatever it's called for a week straight in order to upgrade my 93 civic hatch with an exhaust and a bit more power mods in order to have an easier time winning. After that, the rest was history and I was on fast track making my way through the game with ease.

Recently went back to the older Gran Turismos and weirdly enough actually enjoyed the first one more than the second since it actually offered some challenge in the majority of events. GT2 is great and mindblowingly huge for its time, but once you get anything really decent the AI can't keep up.

This game was my life as a 9 year old! Basically set the scene for my passion in JDM cars today. I even remember dreaming about how the graphics of future GT titles would be photo-realistic, and now, here we are with GT7 - not too far off. The nostalgia is real!

Regarding the license tests: I remember you could actually import your GT1 save file and then it would skip the licenses you had already completed in GT1…

I probably restarted GT 2 like 3 times. As a kid I was not the best taking care of the memory cards

GT2 really kickstarted my love for cars and racing in general along with the old Colin Mcrae rally games. What's fascinating is seeing how many of the "normal road cars" of GT2 are nopw highly sought after and massively collectible!

The saddest part is that I never had a control with any sort of analog steering simulation so I couldn't play this game the way it was meant to. I played the soul of of Gran Turismo 1 tho, cars less sensible, you could play on the keyboard.

If anyone wants a challenge, try winning the top end race car events with the gold I-C license prized car the GTO/ 3000 GT LM. It's hard! You'll probably need the softest race tire in some cases. The FTO LM from I-A licenses is another one though it is considerably less difficult than using the GTO/3000 GT. And you can win every event with very little tuning or switching tires. Beating the top end races with the del sol LM you get from I-B is even easier and just plain simple with the Toyota GT one 99' you're rewarded with from the special S license. I remember my very last play through I used the FTO to beat all top end race car events except the GT500 races. Some Good times!

Playing GT2, one of the driving licenses that had the camaro and the blind turn (I believe it's in the I-C license) Is stupid difficult and I absolutely loathe it!! I'd say it's the hardest out of all of them in GT2.

Great review! One thing: GT2 physics and sounds are also way improved compared to GT1, you should mention that because it's very important.

Gran Turismo 2 was an amazing game in it's day. The one thing I didn't like about it was that even though it had tons of cars most of them were basically unusable for racing. The game didn't scale the AI cars to be comparable to your car if I'm remembering correctly. That is one think I really like about the Forza Horizon series. You can use a 30hp car with a top speed of 50mph and still be able to win the race because all your opponents will have similar spec vehicles.

"I'd say pretty much every single manufacturer that wasn't an Italian super car is here." The funny thing is, Pagani almost made it in. You can find names of two Zondas in the game files, which then ended up later appearing in GT3.

last comment: at 15:40 you can see that the minimap doesn't have a black outline, another sign that the game was rushed. also the races appear in reverse in the car makers races you find at the dealer. you get random tracks in normal or reverse. only time you ever get to race in Rome Night either in GT/Simulation mode for example.

Imagine PD remakes GT2 with all the cars that were cut during development and an Online mode. Yes, that would damage GT7, but a man can only dream, right?

The fascinating thing about older racing games is the unusual or even very regular cars that aren't memorable enough to be featured in more modern games. It's like a time capsule. With that said, until I can drive a 1999 Renault Scénic, no racing game will be complete to me.

As a fellow Australian, what we also need is a new licensed V8 Supercars game. I am aware the V8’s can be driven on Forza Horizon, however I am a PlayStation kid. Grew up from the PS1 to the 4. Haven’t got the 5 yet. Not in a rush. Cheers mate 🇦🇺

The thing about this game is that at first you’ll feel discouraged by how your car feels slow and how ai is faster than you, until you get a race car. Once you get yourself a legitimate race car like the Mugen NSX GT or Unisia Jecs R33 GTR GT it gets easier, these are good choices that help you thru the game. I didn’t feel the need to buy extra cars since the events provided me with prize cars that I could use for each event. License tests take a while but they aren’t that bad once you got that grasp of it. I’ve sank a lot of hours into this game and I feel like I’ve gotten to the point where I know everything about the game. I grew up playing this game as well ever since I was 3 years old.

5:45 Actually, this was the case for GT1 aswell, so I don't think that is one of the bugs/programmimg errors or whatever. Unless that was confirmed in an interview or something back then or at a later date.

really wish they released a main entry on the ps4. I did not like sport at all. Just really confused on the time logistics that go in to Gran Turismo games. Hoping its a great game because the competition (assetto corsa not necessarily Forza) has captured my attention for the time being.

This is such a beautiful and charming game. I'm 33 and I keep coming back to it because I haven't found anything better. Most people don't like it because learning the driving physics is so hard, but once you pass that (trough the licenses), the game is amazing. I think the graphics are better than today's games, they were too good for PlayStation 1 and have dated like fine wine, because it gives you that 90s "videogame nostalgia" feel that modern games have failed to keep with all their bells and whistles.

i love almost every game in the series (and i would give 10/10 to almost every entry - just becasue these are life-time games, enjoyed for decades of daily sessions), but GT2 has to be my numer one, and not only in the series, not only as a sim-cade or even racing game, but a nr1. game overall. I just love it - such a wonderful mix of the best of "arcade" and best of "simulation", this im for me ultimate, golden f***** rule SIMCADE perfection. It has all the nuances of different cars, and driving techinques to make it very enjoyable for sim fans, and somehow it's bombastic and dynamic like the best arcade titles. Plus the presentation, the music, the style of every small thing in this title just oozes love, care and passion for motorsport and art. Whenever i think i'm bored with it, i find another car, and another idea, and find myself doing twenty laps on laguna seca. I only find rally event meh, although i've heard different regions have different rally physics and from what i saw japanese version seems simmilar to gt3 - only gt game with fun rallies.

I enjoy driving in GT1, the LM cars are much more OP, and the phisics sometime goes crazy, but thats part of the fun. GT2 feels more Drift oriented, and has so many events wich the first lack unfortunately. On duck station with 60fps hack and 4k res GT2 looks even better than GT3, is just amazing. Something that 20 years ago on my old 14" TV was just impossible.

I was playing GT2 without a Memory Card, so I was rushing Licenses every 3 day, because I didn't wanted the broke console. In the end I needed as much as 2-3 hours (if my memory is fine) to finish them all. I really liked them, I was good at it. They learned me how to drive on the track

I will rebuy GT 1,2,3 i have the 4 all ready. These game were great back in the day when i was 9-14 years old. It will bring back a lot of nostalgia that for sher. I seen so many video in the couple of days of GT 1,2,3,4 it feel right to play it again. Thanks for the video Colourshed

easily my fav racing game. i will take the little bugs over non stop updates, dlc, microtransactions, in game currency etc etc any day. plays perfect as an eboot on psp and runs on my vita flawlessly as well.

I understand your argument where the license test are concerned however if you get gold on all the license events, each one gives you a rare car that you cannot buy!! So they’re totally worth it if you ask me!! And looking on the bright side there’s only a handful of test that you have to dude just about absolutely perfect to get gold.. I would say about six or seven in total?? The one in the alpha Romeo 155 sedan on Rome circuit comes to mind

Gran Turismo 2 was updated to fix the problems of completion as far as I know. There is a version 1.2. That version was probably released on some sort of greatest hits. Edit: Yes I was correct. The completion bug was fixed in the 1.2 version of the game which was released under the greatest hits label.

Gran Turismo 2 is the game I'd recommend those new to the Gran Turismo series start with - GT1 is amazing for what it is, though it's also incredibly flawed. GT3 is great, but a slog for how little content actually made it to the PS2, and GT4 is like climbing Mount Everest with everything they crammed into the PS2. GT2 starts off as a bit of a slog, but you can pretty easily cheese the early game grind by buying the '93 Toyota Supra Turbo or '90 Mazda RX-7. There's a ton of unique cars that just don't show up in any other game in the series (And some, like the Chrysler Phaeton, '97 Nissan R390 GT1 road car, the various JGTC cars and the Renault Espace F1, that very rarely appear elsewhere in media) and the event list is varied enough to where you'll have to buy at least one of each type of car, provided you didn't win it from an event.

I might be in the minority, but the GT2 soundtrack (PAL version) was a horrible disappointment for me. Really liked GT1, GT2 lacked that something (and I think it had less tracks as well?).

I know Gran Turismo games will never get remastered but out of them all this is the one I’d want to see. All of the period cars getting new current gen HD models, there are so many long forgotten gems that have been absent from the series for ages. Tommy Kiara ZZ’s, the 90’s JGTC cars, 70s muscle cars around Seattle circuit, the Vectors and Venturi’s, all of the awesome racing modification versions, the 90s JDM catalogue. It would be glorious.

Coming from someone who hasn't played this or any gran turismo game for that matter: GT2 is the best looking Gran Turismo by far imo.

I always see this game as "the franchise that is too unfun to even try" The first gt was so convoluted, confusing and finicky it destroyed any and all interest in car simulation games, by the end of the day I literally rather go to the circuit and actually drive a car there and not have a virtual license test to just get my first drive.

They technically used the Indy speedway as Test Track, also Super Speedway is based on the one from Twin Motegi circuit, AFAIK, both were updated to real tracks in later games when they got the license.

If you gold the licence tests you get good cars, you could also buy a Supra for 8k and punish all the way to the top. GT2 is the shit

4:11 What's with PS1 games and the scratch and smell stuff? I remember having a PES game that smelled like the football/soccer field when scratched.

There is a demonstration video in the menu that shows you how to get gold on the license.

Reviewing Gran Turismo 2 in 2021 without at least a passing mention of Gran Turismo 2 Plus is a disservice. The one true way to play this game in the modern era, regardless if you're in emulators or stuck with the console.

I could have sworn Gran Turismo 2 was on PS2. Guess I mandella'ed myself.

I got this game from my grandparents at their annual Christmas Eve party and went home that night and immediately popped it in and played for several hours in the basement, alternating between racing and just looking at the descriptions of all the cars. Eventually mom had to force me to go to bed so she could prepare for the next day, lol. Sorry, mom. Bought a lime green S13 as my first car, just like I did in the first game.

Fortunately, even though the game was rushed in development, it's saving grace was that it was built on the original Gran Turismo, and all the groundwork done there. Early demos of GT2 does show it using the HUD from the original game, but you can clearly see developers racing on some new track layouts. While I never owned GT2 myself, I still tried it out in my youth, and liked it just as well as the first game. However, why they removed SSR 11 is a good question. The course was hard, and provided a nice challenge. I don't really know why they changed the layout, because even though the original chicane was difficult, once you had developed a good angle of attack, this could be easily tackled even at great speed. As I recently did a full playthrough of the original game to gather data for a car list, I took it upon me to do all the races, and try my best to gold all the licence tests (which I managed to do for the B and A classes). I particularly enjoyed the All Night endurance races, especially the one where you are restricted to only use street cars. I beat the 30-lap race in an upgraded Prelude, just for the added challenge of selecting a rather underpowered car. So why was it removed, and subsequently changed, I don't really know. But this game brought many fan favorite tracks to the series, such as Mid-Field and Apricot Hill. Many of which has been featured in later titles. As for the car list.. This game did feature many cars that has not been seen in later titles. I do remember a diesel VW Polo if I'm not mistaken. And why are there so few diesel cars in games anyways? Aw well. At least you had the freedom of choice from so many different cars. Everything from small city cars, kei cars, hatchbacks to big muscle cars and the crazy race cars

PAL 100% (UK atleast) Play complete everything you can and save. Restart the game but choose german language and Vauxhall disappears and becomes Open, But the tigra/corsa or whatever and do those manufacturer races= 100%, Save and return to yuor native language. Probably works in reverse to.

Unless you know the tracks like the back of your hand, the draw distance can be extremely frustrating.

Gran Turismo 2’s Blow off valve sounds will never leave my head

As someone who's first non mariokart racing games were on PS3 gran Turismo was a key part of my car guy childhood.

You know what this game is these days? The best mobile racing experience. Drop an emulator on your phone, grab a PS controller with you and it's just perfection. Love the game, played it far too much during the PS1 days, so did my friends, and their dads as well. We would compare how many cars we'd have and how much credits we have. Don't have this kind of experience anymore, I miss it in a way and while I never played any GT starting from 5 on as I just got and stayed on PC instead of the PS3 and beyond, I am still a second hand sad about the state of GT7, when you compare it to GT4, the last I played and it was GT brought to perfection IMO, it just feels like they lost their way. Instead of car discovery being optional, it's being forced down your throat, events that resemble the old classics only in name and in general just lack of content, focus being more on the online side of thing... If we had GT4, but modernized and bigger, I'd honestly buy a PS5 just for that. Oh well, GT2 is still entertaining today and on PC, I am kind of hoping Forza Motorsport is not going to completely suck.

The one area the GT games have always failed at is the actual racing. They give you cars that have always been fun to drive (save the Griffins, seriously F those cars) but the actual racing is non-existent with brain dead AI. This is one area that Forza has always been better at especially from 3-6 where at least one of the AI cars would really put a fight.

i really miss the race modding from gt2 that you never see these days anymore, you could build the entire 1998-9 btcc field from the unassuming european family car lineup

I spent so much of my childhood playing this game. GT2 is my favourite of the franchise. It was an incredible game back in the day.

Rally was always bad in GT, the wide Tracks and physics...

I like the license tests, they’re extremely challenging to get all gold on and the grind to finally getting it all gold feels extremely rewarding
