Had the privilege as a teenager (pop never appealed) of hearing Segovia perform live in a large concert hall. Having just heard a track of this piece played by the composer Granados on a piano (recorded on a piano roll), and being amazed by its quality and freshness, Segovia brings the piece alive in a strikingly similar way.
You bring back memories of my youth. I treated my best friend to a Segovia performance for her 16th birthday. It was a Pittsburgh Symphony concert on a VERY cold winter night. It must have been 1957, around the time of this recording. I don’t remember the program but do remember he played 5 encores, and my friend and I were enthralled.
@@cruscante I have. Much prefer Granados' own interpretation. Haven't heard anyone coming close to that on piano other than Alicia de Larrocha on piano or Segovia on guitar.
So beautiful - his sound is mesmerising - nobody can sound like him - even if they are technically more adept - he is the true pioneer of the solo guitar - his legacy will endure - long after others have been forgotten - his is the soul of the Iberian peninsular
My husband and I saw him in person in San Jose, California, years ago. Little know fact - there are two well trained mice wearing sombreros inside his guitar playing their little hearts out.
Thats the '37 Hauser in this video. It only had 3 years to live at this time before it was destroyed in a accident. That was probably the darkest day in the history of the guitar.
Soul stirring.Maestro makes light work of this classic. You could take the great man out of Spain but not Spain out of his music even when he plays Bach.Os there a 'boom' chuck kind of strum technique also involved. Very refined personality too.Virtuoso singular !Thanks maestro!Andres Segovia rest in peace !Thanks for sharing !
I think this video may be older. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-rjRLpE_Tzd.html You can clearly see that his hair was still dark and on the whole looks younger than in the video of him playing the Granados piece here.
@@barryjones9362 You're right, it probably got taken down due to some copyright issue. I wish I had downloaded it, but it is too late now and am not sure how to find it again.
Segovia siempre he tocado lo mismo. Lo de otros. Tarrega, albeniz….
Wonderful sound as always, from Segovia, he was really charismatic. However, the rhythym here is an absolute shambles. It always seemed to me he was making up as he went along. There are so many really fine players nowadays. Many inspired by Segovia, despite his liberal useage of rubato!
When I first heard Segovia play this some 40 years ago I was horrified at his broken phrasing of the opening melody. Listening again my opinion is unchanged.
I've always felt the same. Segovia never played Spanish composers as the composers wrote the phrasing. Not even the adagio movement from the "Fantasia para un gentilhombre" survived to his "interpretation" and it's more moderato than adagio and suffocating, it does not breath, like the partiture stipulates. EDIT: This comment before has, wrongly, the concierto named as "Concierto de Aranjuez", which he never played.
@@franzrogar I understood that Segovia refused to ever perform the Aranjuez, because it was dedicated to and premiered by Sainz de La Maza. Such was Segovia's ego. You may be confusing the Concierto with the Fantasia para gentilhombre dedicated to Segovia.
@@rjlchristie You're right. I've made the required corrections to avoid spread of wrong information, nothing it was wrongly noted before. Thanks for the correction :-)
