The Event, we have been waiting for since last March! It got canceled once, but we were glad to see it happen. After wanting a chance to shoot a Lake Superior & Ishpeming Locomotive for a long time, Christian finally got his chance, The Grand Canyon Railway 29. Enjoy this video on her second last day of operation, on a Trains Magazine Photo Charter.
Ever since Christian was a little kid the LS&I has been in his life while watching Train Videos. 734 on All About fast Moving Trains, is the main reason Christian grew up to like the centered headlight look. And 18 was in the Christmas Special of Shining Time Station. 29 was also in a few programs Christian watched as a kid. That is why when Christian realized that the Grand Canyon Railway had both 18 & 29, he wanted to go out to shoot the line. While 18 may be years from operating, 29 had a nostalgic place for Christian as well. Which is why when this came up, Christian didn't think twice about getting charter tickets. While the initial charter was canceled, and Christian didn't want to attempt to chase the line, this was the perfect solution.
For day 1 of the Charter we went all the way to the Canyon. The Classic green Pullman coaches were coupled onto the train. This will be one of there last appearances with the green paint scheme, as they will be painted into Polar Express coaches. We did three runbys in the morning. Each runby position differently. Made our way up to the Canyon, and while riding in an open vestibule. From there we deboarded and Christian got to see the Grand Canyon for the first time. It was beautiful. While not for long, it was something to appreciate. After reboarding, we headed south and got some great runby locations. The 40 really put on a smoky show. One thing, 29 reminded me of a Fast food joint. Running on Recycled Vegetable Oil, 29 is a green steam locomotive. Some of the runbys were at the speed limit on the line 40 miles an hour. The other Thing I'd like to say is 29, was loud. She could make some noise and put on a great show. We would arrive back at the depot just before sunset where christian would catch 29 leave once again, but not before catching his first Warbonet! A Fake one. Anyhow, day 1 was great, and this so far is our favorite charter we have attended.
Well hope you all enjoyed day 1 of the Grand Canyon Railway 29's Charter. Day 2 will be up next week and will have another Midwestern Steam Star, 4960. So as always stay tuned. While November was supposed to be a month break from Railfanning so far we have caught two NS heritage units. The New York Central & Penn Central. While our Christmas Season Railfan season starts next weekend, hopefully before the end of the year will see two of our favorite steam locomotives. So as always stay tuned.
