My daughter flew me out there on New Year's Eve to say goodbye to 2020 and we had a cabin right at Bright Angel there on the south rim and watched the sunrise over the canyon on New Years Day 2021! We took in the views, ate breakfast on the cliff & hiked around the south rim a bit, then on to Arches Nat'l Park for even more spectacular (and socially distanced) views & adventures! It was truly EPIC and such a great mother/daughter experience! Glad you & your mom had such a beautiful day!

Going down is easy …..coming back up was the hardest thing I have ever done in my life! Many many years ago I backpacked down, ( I believe it was 6 miles down) but the trail back up was 17 miles. Kudos to your mom for hiking this with you

I totally relate to your mom’s fear of the cliff edges. A couple of Hikers who passed me on the Queens Garden trail in Bryce, asked my husband who was behind me..”Is that lady Ok”...I was creeping along the side of the trail mumbling to myself...was actually saying positive affirmations..to get myself down the steep parts.

That is awesome. That hike is no joke and the signs that show people puking as a dehydration warning is just enough to make yo feel like a badass knowing that you can do a hike that most people can't do. Me and a friend did the south to north rim in one day, camped on north rim and then hiked back the second day. The north side is more scenic going up to the north side, you definately need to do that hike. If not rim to rim at least explore the north side the way you did the south side.

Thank you so much for taking me to a place I will never be able to hike at my age ! My eyes bugged out and my mouth hung open in amazement! You were the perfect guide for this Nikki ! I used to hike the Bitteroot Mountain range by Missoula MT back in the early 90s. And moving back to north east MN hiking parts of the Superior Hiking Trail along the north shore of Lake Superior on day trips into the mid 2000s. .

Crap i have a height thing (scared of heights 🤪) and just watching you stand there on the canyon just turns my stomach but i watch your video till the end...it was fun and entertaining to watch and probably will watch another of your videos...its a nice and fun way to see the USA...thinking of doing a similar Trip (iam from germany) dont know if in asia or north america (including canada)...well you have a fan here in germany and will check your video...you have a great mom!!! You should take the rafting trip. As a geologist it was very interesting to see the geology laid out before you as you cut section down into the PC/Archean Vishnu Schist and older rocks. It was a phenomenal trip and highly educational. As a boy scout living in AZ, we camped in the canyon and I don't remember a permit system or the like but that was over 40 years ago.

I felt that I was there. you are good video Grapher and weather you know or not your videos are never boring because the frame change I'd there ever 5 second it is a good cinematography tip many do not know. you have to belive me I have watched your episodes in a marathon run some times 16 to 18 hours with food breaks.

Too bad it was closed for you! Normally at this time and with COVID weather permitting The east entrance is closed so you enter from the south entrance to get to the south rim but south should be open right now. Darn! Too bad, def worth going back!

I took Bright Angel trail to the base and got back to the trailhead in one day 7 years ago. I started around 4 AM and got to Colorado river around 6:30. Then, I walked toward the first bridge and crossed the river. Immediately after reaching the other shore, I turned around and went back to the trailhead.

great job nikki! you made it look so easy. i tried to run down and up kaibab this past march... i didn't make it to the bottom, because i was worried the whole time about being able to make it back up. (my friend said, that's how you learn about credit card debt). the second attempt was the south rim loop. i ran the 24 mile loop but it wasn't pretty... i was probably a couple drinks of water beyond a helicopter ride. anyway great video.

GOOD choice doing it in November . WE done it in August 2014 and barely made it back up. it was sooooooo HOT . The worst part was going back up to Skeleton Point - so hot and no breeze at all ... till we got almost up - between the rocks where finally was nice breeze. felt like a million bucks. it took us like 2.5 hours down and 4 hours up .

I remember many years ago hiking the south rim - Bright Angel trail to Plateau Point...did 6+ miles down then back out...my legs were jelly by the end of that (didnt train for it)!...serious calve burn..its hiking out that really humbles you as you know....lol.. your Mom is a trooper for doing what she did! I can say tho that the North Rim is BY FAR my favorite over the South rim...much less trafficked...

I lived in Grand Canyon Village on the south rim as a child, go Phantoms! (school mascot back then, think it's changed now). And none of the people who work in Phantom Ranch hike in and out every day. Depending on the job you are doing and what schedule you're assigned it's generally 10 days on and 10 days off for the rangers. So hike down, stay for 10 days and then hike back out. And the younger seasonal 20 something employees who do the housekeeping and food service come down for a few months at a time and then a new crew comes in for the next season.

Great Video both of you did great. About 3 weeks ago I hiked down to OOH AAH point and back up. It was pretty tough going back up but I took my time and it was so beautiful. My goal is to make it to phantom ranch in the future. I can't wait to walk over the black bridge!!

Your videos are inspiring. Someone is inner tubing down that river wearing a wetsuit. Better than wearing a suit and tie. You know the stories about John Wesley and John Wesley Powell. Both very tough campers. John Wesley studied greek while riding his horse. Got up at 4:30 am every morning to meditate and people said......yeah you guys live by that "method" so they were called methodists.

Nikki, I hiked down to to Phantom Ranch, but only made it back to Indian Springs. All the way down and back in one day is really pushing it. Also it can be 38 at the canyon rim and 70 at Phantom Ranch.

You should visit Trinity Lake California. I recommend visiting in spring to early summer. The best trails there are... #1 Caribou Lake 20 miles, #2 Granite Lake 11 miles and #3 Canyon Creek Lakes 17 miles... Mileages are round trip out and back. Caribou Lake is my favorite. It has two trails. One goes over the Caribou Mtn. and is steeper/harder but is about 2 miles shorter and you are rewarded with a breath taking view from 8000 feet elevation of two of the three lakes and the most beautiful peaks in the Trinity Alps mountain range. The other trail goes around the Mtn. Caribou Lake is best enjoyed if you Pack it and spend at least one night at the lake... Yosemite was my favorite before I discovered Trinity. Now days I still love Yosemite but only from February to May, when there's still a lot of snow and it's not crowded with people.
