Grand Duke GSVLOC 2014 

Best Julia I’ve seen. I wish the whole cast matched her mastery. She NAILS the exact timer of character Julia should have. Great interpretation and execution!

Glad some company is performing this. Grand Duke is an excellent work and under performed. A lovely version.

This is a remarkably good production with an impressive orchestra and excellent lead singer/actors. The chorus is outstanding. There are many neat productions ideas, and delightful liberties taken (e.g. by the trombones during the courtiers' first entrance). But some led to inconsistencies, such as the "Athenian" chorus in Act 2. One obvious cut not taken would have been the whole business of the lead soprano's "strong English accent" which was only put in during the first performances because she had a thick German one! I'm afraid the video production does not do it justice. It really should have been filmed in HD (even in 2014). And it's "duel", not "dual". But thank you for this good production of a rarely seen work.

These productions are excellent, so full of life. 'The Grand Duke' is tricky to bring off as it's G & S on autopilot a bit. But this performance works very well and makes the best possible case for this operetta. Very very enjoyable.

I'm in Philadelphia's Savoy Company, and we are reviving this one next. The last time we did it was in 1994, so we're doing it for the first time in 30 years!

Totally spoilt by the ridiculous costume choices in Act Two - Gilbert specifies Greek. Julia would be very good, but again Gilbert's satire is undermined by the fact that she does not speak/sing with the specified German accent.
