Grand funk are undoubtedly America's most underrated rock act. They are so damn good it's ridiculous but they don't get nearly the respect that they deserve.
I think it's because of their limited song list on radio. I recall when classic rock really became popular in the 80's and beyond, and even the best stations only played We're An American Band, Some Kind of Wonderful, and I'm Your Captain. Over and over. So much has never been heard - that is, until streaming music came to be and many have become aware of what was missed. LOTS of B-side songs that make this band special to GFR fans.
Your kidding , there not in the rock n roll hall of fame !! Out of all the Musician,s in the World , GRAND FUNK RAILROAD , I WOULD RANK THEM AMONG THE BEST , DO YOU KNOW HOW MUCH ENERGY IT TAKES TO PERFORM LIKE TAKE , VERY DEEP INNER SOUL FROM THE GUT PERFORMANCE !!! HELL I HAD TO RAID THE FRIDGE AFTER LISTENING TO THAT PERFORMANCE :: GOOD AS HAVING SEX !!!
No way. They were VERY highly-rated back in the day. These guys were selling out stadiums and arenas left and right. Underrated? No chance. They aren't well-known now, but they were near the top of the heap 50 years ago.
@@johncrafton8319 Wow, you really like trolling down the comments, to make sure anybody who comments, that they feel this band was underrated, out of respect for the band, that you have to throw in your 2 cents, on how you feel about the word underrated.........Maybe you should teach seminars 😄 The phrase underrated is relative to the person who feels it, & is not up for debate, it is a personal opinion!
I've known of these guys forever--but I've never really listened to anything other the stuff that gets played on classic rock stations--looks like I have a whole new world of Grand funk Railroad to get into!
The RnRHoF didn't do it in any chronological order...they just went with was popular that year...hence the late 60s/early 70s snub of a LOT of the classic bands...
GRAND FUNK RAILROAD wanted to tour with The Stones but was turned down. That will show you they was good enough to do a show with anybody at that time. They just had to much energy and if you were a headliner band you did not want GFR on the same show with you.
@Fred Flintstone wow what the hell is this shit she said nothing about that I'm a old hippie chick and I just don't know what to say to this bullshit but just wow
Wow Man ! Really?? I always wanted to meet him.His singing and his guitar playing were like no other.i seen GFR awhile back ,they played all the hits, and the front man did his thing, but he is no Mark Farner
@@lindawilliams2211 oh yeah, their boys were a couple years ahead of ours in school rode the same bus. You could see at school stuff and church things good parents. Mark would usually do at least one show a year at the local casino. Missed it in 2020 hoping when things open up he does a show. He has 10yrs.on me but man when he cuts loose on stage it's like damn!!!
All that sound-live!-no lip syncing-no overdubs-no gimmicks-coming from just three guys is just amazing in every sense of the word. Critics hated them but the fans loved them and right here we can see why.
This is a good one. Rare Earth "I Know I'm Losing You" the Ecology album version is something to check out. Not "stank face" but has some cool things goin' on.
I had a TON of 8 track tapes that werent that lucky. I had a Craig Powerplay in my Ghia and I boxed 2 6x9 Jensen speakers and put them right behind me on the fold down seat. I had a 1967 Kharman Ghia convertible....dayum I miss that car. I sold it when I went into the Air Force in 1976
Jamal, keep in mind that this song was released in 1969. We're in 2019. That's 50 years ago. Think about it, a half a century ago! And it still sounds fresh and relevant today as it did back then. Great choice, great review!
I woke up this morning at 4 am, thoroughly depressed from all the circumstances going on. Then I look at this video and instantly am transported to 1976 when I first heard Grand Funk. Jamal, thank you for that. Whenever I am depressed I can count on you to lighten up my day. Thank you Thank you Thank you.
That is just one of they songs.best live show you will ever see.they put 150 persent Everytime they are on stage.they are the Amrcan Band. The peoples Band. You ant herd nothing yet.wate until you hear more of them. Just unbelievable ☮✝
Bruh, with a name like Grand "FUNK" Railroad, are you really that surprised... Man the 70's had it all. Funk, Rock, Soul, Blues, R&B fo yo ass like no other era. Long live and Love 70's music, forever. We had the best.
"You kids don't know Grand Funk? The wild shirtless lyrics of Mark Farner? The bong-rattling bass of Mel Schacher? The competent drumwork of Don Brewer? Oh, man!"
I am so pleased that young people are listening to this great old music. Grand Funk was doing things in the 60's that led Zeppelin did in the 70's. Love that mix of Blues, soul and funk!
I grew up just a couple miles from Mark's family home and went to school with Mark's younger brother Eric. One time when I was at their family home for a visit Mark happened to be there visiting his family - I remember Terry Knight the manager of Grand Funk Railroad came into the house with a briefcase - I suppose it was legal documents. I'll never forget that. Growing up in the Flint area Grand Funk Railroad helped me to make the connection with Soul, R&B, Rock & Roll as a young teenager. Michigan brewed some really fine musical talent during the 60s and early 70s. Thank you for doing this review and reaction.
This takes me back to my hippy dippy dope fiend days back in the late 60 s and early 70s. This was a great era to have lived in. Pure enjoyment. 🎸🎸😎🎸🎸👍👍
I feel the same way... Even though I'm 61 and getting up there in age lol I wouldn't trade those experiences I had in the 70's for anything! The great music added so much to the tapestry of my life. ✌❤
They played 26 miles outside Atlanta, Georgia. They were so loud that they could be heard in the city. At that time 1969 I believe....it was the loudest concert ever recorded.
Raymond, I was on vacation with my mom & dad we were in Atlanta & we went to a Braves game that night, we heard a crowd roarin' in the distance, didn't know why at the time. Some years later I bought the live album & put 2& 2 together, it was GFR tearin' the place up! By the way I was 11 at the time, also I am from Palestine Texas, lived here all my life. God bless Grand Funk Railroad!
I'm smiling ! It's not incredible, it's Grand Funk Railroad !! I love your reactions during the song. This is music that you FEEL ! Been listening to these guys for 50 years, and this is still my favorite song ! Mark Farner, Donnie Brewer and Mel Schacher, all in their 70's now and all are still producing great music. Talent is truly timeless AND ageless ! Thank you for sharing this one !!
MARK GOT SCREWED BY HIS BAND MATES WHEN HALF DRUNK AND SIGNED PAPERS GIVING BAND CONTROL AND THE NAME TO THEM. SO IF YOU WANT TO SEE MARK, THE WRITER, SONG MEISTER, GUITAR PLAYER, SINGER, YOU WILL HAVE TO LOOK UP HIS NAME MARK FARNER TO SEE HIM. NOT GRAND FUNK.
Absolutely love Grand Funk. So many great hits. Listen to them everyday. Saw them only once at a County Fair. Would like to see them again, from Michigan. Ty
This is the original - and IMHO - the best lineup of Grand Funk. Mark Farner (vocals), Don Brewer (drums) and Mel Schacher (bass). This is still my all time favorite band and I could listen to this music 24/7! And yeah, the critics crapped on them but they were great!
Oh Jamel! I love your reaction to this. I am 66 year old lady who rocked out to GFR while in high school. So much outstanding music then. I am so glad I stumbled upon your channel. You are a delight!
This is the first time I've ever heard this, and I've been a classic rock fan for 30+ years. This is the kind of song you need a whiskey and a cigarette *after* listening to it. Just to wind yourself down...
I thought I knew enough Grand Funk to say I liked them. Like you, this is my first time hearing this song and holy Crap! That was some seriously good ear candy!!
Just 3 guys. Just 3. They're still the greatest. Now listen to "people let's stop the war" & "mean mistreater" by the FUNK. Prepare to have mind blown again.
I was 19 years old when GFR came out IN 1969 .... I saw them in 1973 live and was JUST BLOWEN AWAY .... ONE OF THE GREATEST ROCK BANDS EVER .... GLAD TO SEE YOU YOUNG GUYS DISCOVERING OUR MUSIC FROM THE 60S AND 70S .... BE WELL MY FRIEND ....
Our music and danced our butts off to this band. I am 73 yrs and still standing to tell about it!!!! You love this music...you were born in the wrong era my boy! Love your rhythm and care for this sound.
Man...I just have to say...out of all the "reaction" channels...i really enjoy yours the most. I love seeing you discover the music I grew up with and truly enjoy new styles. Rock on brother !
This was a weekend staple for me and my buddies in high school. We had this on 8-track, a 12 pack of beer, a rural Texas two lane blacktop at warp 6 and a large time was had by all!
Grand Funk Railroad is hard driving rock! They add the "funk and soul" to everything. This is by far one of the greatest jams any band has done. A true American band!!
my mom's friend gave the grand funk live album when i was in the 5th grade and as i ran down to the basement to play it on my record player one of the records fell out and broke a huge chunk out of the record making it unplayable. so i never heard this until i saw the album in a record store 30 yrs later and bought it. when i got home and played this song I jumped with excitement and started laughing. i was so blown away by this song which actually a cover of eric burden & the animals. best cover of all time in my opinion. sounds amazing on vinyl too
See his face? That's what you look like, when you mean it! I was 9 when this came out... I'm happy to have grown up in the 60s and 70s, when music was real and good, and could squeeze you by the soul! This fellow's like a male version of Janis Joplin! Singing from the heart, from the gut! Soul, funk, rock and all 'dat!' At the one point, they go into a rhythm that reminded me of Deep Purple's "Honey Hush!"
I have been a big fan of Grand Funk since I first heard them back in the early 70's this song still gives me goosebumps to this day. They were so heavy for the times. Best music ever.
I watch this reaction frequently cause it’s the absolute best! Stank face Maximus 🤣 GFR were one of the greatest and wish like hell I could have seen them preform this live. Just too great for words.
Great reaction Jamel!! My face hurts from smiling. Yes!! Mark Farner (lead singer) does do it all. He plays guitar, harmonica, keyboards, bass, and a little drums. He was a good football player too and won dance competitions when he was a teenager. 👍🏻
I just saw Mark Farner and his band a couple of months ago and all I could think of was how can they can keep sound so awesome all this years after. One of my faves. Pd: sorry for the english.
This is such an iconic song from my generation. The music part of it will give you a goosers all over. You mix in the lyrics and the story. One and done. The extended was I do believe he is either coming home from a fishing expedition or on the other side, maybe coming home from war. With each and every day "they all" have thier own dreams and hope of going home.
@@mateusdeandrade1305 The bass player in my first band (who immediately became my best friend) learned to play by listening to Mel Schacher. He developed a similar style in everything he played.
This to me is your best reaction and you have got some funky moves !!!! GFR put the funk in rock and roll and you were definitely feeling the funk !!!!! Thanks so much.
I must admit that watch your reaction to this video at least 3 times a week . Brother you are feeling the power and soul that I felt back in back 1969. I introduced my entire neighborhood to GFR. Music was meant to played loud
I had a friend once that came to see me on New Years Eve to thank me for playing this song for him for the first time. He said it was one of the top moments of his year.
Yes yes yes. AND YOU ALWAYS ALWAYS HAVE A KICK ASS TSHIRT ON. I want to shirt shop at your house. Damn I bet your wife has lots of t-shirt loads, and I just know she has to handle them all with care. I have needed this the last few nightmarish weeks. Much love to you jamal
Now That MEMORY HURT !! Please tell me your sorry. Take it back~ Jack ~ lol I couldn't afford a stereo, at the time so I would go to the thrift store, buy me an FM radio, then buy two BIG speakers at the thrift store, took radio apart hooked the big speakers to the radio, I had STEREO !! :) ~Peace~
I love watching your reaction to this video !!!! You look so happy. We knew how to do it back then. You got me dancing in my living room and I’m 67 yrs old. Thanks. Keep on keeping on 💜
I’m sure someone has already mentioned that they aren’t in the Rock and Roll hall of Fame. Grand Funk is too great to be in the shame of Cleveland, Ohio. It’ll never happen until they fire the director
Ladies and Gentlemen...this was the First time I've ever Heard this song. And I got to experience it as an epic live performance, Right Here on This youtube channel on the 4th day of 2020. Man.... I give Thanks & Praises to those who suggested this jam, and to this awesome dude for doing a reaction video to it. With your powers combined, you have opened a new dimension of great classic rock to this mere mortal.
