I respect and can understand that a martial art system or aspect of the system does not only have to cause damage to an opponent. There's the combat elements but also the elements of the practitioner's relationship to the self. Forms can help you master yourself, in which case I can understand that they do not need to be a series of lethal moves, etc. However, I love moves with strength or a form of inner energy to them. There's no shame in the combat history that shaped Korean martial arts.

Just love this. So precise and coordinated. Perfect rhythm and count. I am trying to get my Koryo down this precise before testing.

Don't sweat it. If you already earned your first dan, the test isn't much diff. Especially if you've continued your training. I was a dummy and took a 2 yr break. Just relax, you'll do great!

Narrow stances are a deliberate sacrifice for stability so we can gain speed. It was a conscious decision by Kukkiwon to do that. The original junbi was to hold the hands in a triangle - like in sipjin. It can be a choke break or assisted block. I used to do the tension + lift on toes, but Kukkiwon doesn't do that (which means, don't try to compete with this method). Punch + kick represents a pull into kick, so it probably makes sense to do it close to "at same time".

I am glad I am studying this form - and others. Testing for black belt in two weeks and the techniques here are clean, smooth and fast. Looking forward to this 1st dan and all the ones to come after. Black Belt is just the beginning, honey, just the beginning.

Me too! I love Taekwondo. If you want to know the self defense aspects of the poomsae watch very old videos and read very old books. You will find things out that are cool.

You have a point about pulling the hand back. As there are usually more than 1 interpretations of a movement in a form, they could be demonstrating any of other interpretations. I don't mind, as long as there are applications that justify it. Now, in this case, they grab the throat and then as they kick, their hands are on the stomach. How odd! I can't imagine an application for this. I have always been taught to keep the hands up while kicking. Good catch!

There's another two textbooks by GM Kang ik Pil (not sure about DVD). PS - GM Lee Kyu Hyung's textbook Still available on Amazon but shipping cost is a lot. (What is Poomsae textbook with DVD & Complete Poomsae - Palgwae and Taeguek)

That is how I learned it too. They changed stuff for the worse in the kukkiwon now days. It annoys me to no ends. Lots of the very intense and combative attitude in poomsae has been replaced by nonchalant attitudes, no tension in any slow motions, and very narrow stances. It really is sort of illogical. They think the forms look more graceful I think and pretty. I thin they look more pretty doing it the oldschool way bc its very strong. Also notice the palm block is very large and slapping.
@andrewgjennings
@andrewgjennings 12 лет назад
You must be an old-timer! :-) Yes, they narrowed the stances considerably a few years ago - and recently, widened them depending on your height. I really don't like a lot of what they do in this form: there's less martial application for the junbi position; it used to be the hands formed a triangle like in sipjin, and the hand-punch-to-kick now seems in the wrong order.

@crawlFace

I agree that the old-school way is very pretty. There's a sincere realism that shows through the strong movements. I love that it wasn't only an "art" in the sense of expression and mastering the body, but it was also an art of mastering an effective combat system for very practical needs throughout its history.
@MaharlikaAWA
@MaharlikaAWA 12 лет назад
Did they change the stances to be narrow? Also the palm grabbing head to elbow move is less distinct now with more of a simultaneous palm grab to elbow.
@tm114paul
@tm114paul 3 года назад
Was it from "What is Poomsae" textbook with DVD?
@MaharlikaAWA
@MaharlikaAWA 12 лет назад
Ya I kind of agree. What was the martial application for the ready stance back then? I never was told. But we did it very concentrated breathing and even going up on our toes and pressing out with tension. Now its all lazy and soft style. Also the punching the hand there is no distinction its all one movement now. before it was fold hand in then punch. Also why are the stances narrow now days? what is the logic? wider is better and more stable. I dont go crazy wide either just natural.

Sound effects like in martial arts movies? Lol!
@sweetcharms1320
@sweetcharms1320 8 лет назад
That's actually the sounds their uniforms are making because of the amount of power and crispness they have in each technique.

@souf_ryu
@souf_ryu 8 лет назад
i agree its a sound effect but they did it on purpose so you can hear it, from a distance they didn't catch the sound of the uniforms but in the form you must hear the uniform sound otherwise the poomsae is invalid, every step and sound and word must be counted for a poomsae to be valid.

Yes in a combat situation, if anyone has ever been in a fight or trained more realistically you would not strike a throat and let it go then kick. You would strike and grab their throat and kick their goin as you pull them in. Hopefully these new ideas will change back.

Yes, it would seem KKW is trying to adopt Chinese preference of quick/agile. I don't mind either way as long as good application can justify either method.

I've actually heard them in person, these are real (unlike the old POW, POW ones you hear in the old WTF videos, lol). Likely it's due to it being done with really old rendering software that misaligns the sound with processing the file after they delete excess video, add in the text & background music. Thankfully newer (much more costly) software rarely has this issue (though Twitch streaming software still do sometimes, lol).

Because it looks cool and graceful and that is the sole reason for it....well now days at least. Any combative applications have been thrown out. Even pyongwon has a combat application when you do the moves. no one teaches it though. TKD is just flash now days and not anything serious anymore because the koreans dont want to progress TKD for serious fighting. Its not the 1950's anymore...
@MaharlikaAWA
@MaharlikaAWA 11 лет назад
I learned the palm block more tight and harder. Why would you bring your arm that high to slap downward? you wouldnt. You would just block there where you are at. Also they now knifehand block to face punch (fist hits palm) very low which makes no sense because originally it was taught higher because that is where the enemy's head will most likely be unless you are fighting a short kid. But when you are around KKW masters you have to just suck it up and do it, but when you are alone....
@MaharlikaAWA
@MaharlikaAWA 12 лет назад
They just want to pretend they never used Japanese karate to make Taekwondo. Also the whole pulling hand back after the throat stripe looks lame, also I dont see the application when you would not be pulling their head in with a front kick like that. Your hand would still be on their throat, THEN you would pull them close. A front kick is a far weapon you wont pull them close and do it, you would instyead do a knee. it makes more sense to keep the hand out.

I guess it doesnt look as good and its not as technical...maaan all of the years I trained wide stances to keep balance were pointless now if they want narrow stances. Nothing makes sense man...ill still teach my way. Yeah the up on toes thing I wont do in tournaments...i will just try to stop the habit even if it feels cooler to do. I guess KKW wants to make some moves more tai chi flow like less intense pressure.

I trained in kung fu, karate , taekwondo, boxing. doing a lot of low stance for leg strenght, but never once was I foolish enough to use most of those stance in a controlled fight or a real street fight. Modified boxers stance works best in all situations.

I've trained for 36 years in 8 styles from 7 countries, fought tournaments & amateur MMA, so when I saw your comment, I shook my head. The point of these forms is to demonstrate first & foremost strength of the mind in control of the body (technical accuracy & precision), not to prepare for actual combat. My own personal fighting style is a mix of all of them, blending all techniques that best match my body (everyone is different) & which best flow together to cause maximum damage with minimal exposure with the most efficient use of energy. Sometimes I end up in a stance out of habit during a combo, but it's not something you stand and face someone with on the street. Required for tournaments, though. As an instructor, I teach and explain the difference b/c forms & practical techniques, and pretty much 100% of people understand the difference and the reasoning behind why the forms are trained, once told. Those with poor instructors may not understand the difference and are in for a surprise if they try them in a fight (unless they're ridiculously fast, high speed trumps a lot, lol) I hope you know the difference, as well :)
