Grand Puy Ducasse (pronounced "Gran Pwee Ducass") or Chateau GPD for short is a 5th growth wine from the Pauillac region. It was started when Arnaud Ducasse purchased a house next to the Gironde river from Jacques de Segur in 1675 (who at that time owned the Lafite estate at that time).
When Bordeaux wines were ranked/classified in 1855, the winery had been sold to other owners so at that time, the winery was called Chateau Artigues Arnaud. In 1932, the owners changed the name to Grand Puy Ducasse to honor the name of the original owner and the place. The vineyard is located on Grand Puy (or big mountain), which is actually a low gravely hill. Also situated on this hill is Grand Puy Lacoste, another 5th growth winery that was actually known in 1855 as Grand Puy.
The winery is quite unique in that a lot of its vineyards are not located at the chateau. They have about 40 hectares of vineyards located in 3 major locations: 1 site near Lafite/Mouton, 1 site near Pontet Canet/D'Armailhac and 1 site near Pichon Baron/Lynch Bages.
The winery has a lot of ownership changes but in 2004, Credit Agricole purchased the winery. In 2013, they brought in Hubert de Bouard of Chateau Angelus as their consultant.
The winery makes about 10,000 cases of this wine each year. The 2017 vintage is a blend of 57% Cabernet Sauvignon and 43% Merlot. The wine is aged in oak (50% new barrels) for 18 months.

I’ll be honest I have always looked over this wine pretty interesting hearing about the different vineyards away from the estate that in my mind is an advantage! I have many Clerc’s, GPL, and D’Armailhac so thanks for making me want to check this out !

Wyatt: my impression also. I drank this wine 10-15 years ago was not that impressed. Lucky it was on sale so that is why I took a shot at it. Then I discovered they have made some vast improvements so we may be catching this on the upswing. Cheers!

Solid chateau. If I find it online, I will usually pick some up. For some reason in the state stores, they ask crazy money for it. Looking forward to some more vids...cheers!

SC 34: nice to know about jurisdictional difference. Here, it is not as well known and people prefer D'Armailhac, Clerc Milon and Cantemerle...doesn't get the respect it deserves, in my opinion. Cheers!

Thank you for the insight here. Just grabbed a bunch of GPD 2019's and saw they have 14,5% ABV. So I guess 2019 is less 'light' and needs more time to integrate everything. An estate that made good progress over the last decade.

Unus Sed Leo: thank you for viewing my video and your comment. I think that was the impression most people had of this wine: light. But with this vintage, I thought it was quite a stark difference from what I have experienced before so I think the quality may be starting to improve. There is no intrinsic reason why this should be any lighter than Grand Puy Ducasse and really, there should be any big difference in the terroir. So I can only postulate that there is only upside for GPD. I really like the value of this wine as , in BC, it is about half the price of Grand Puy Ducasse. Please like, subscribe and keep watching. Cheers!

I think that i am going to buy two bottles but for me it is important that the wine has some freshness(acidity) and tannines, i need a good balance, i don’t like jammy fruit bombs, how is the balance in this wine? Thanks you

RB: a few months since I had it but if I recall, I think the balance is quite good. I find the modern style of Bordeaux much more fresh and vibrant. 2017 is one of my favorite drinking vintages right now as you can get the wines + you don't really have to age them too long. Cheers!
