Actually this not Michigan's worst hoods. There are way more worst places in this world, it pretty obvious ur judgements & assumptions are far from from the truth & reality. Before u make a video, u should definitely educate urself about the area & overall Grand Rapids.
Agreed. You can't just hook up a camera go to what you think looks bad and say it's the hood. You know nothing about my city, and FYI you were going through the Hispanic areas, those people work hard and police patrol there cause they don't have anything better to do. Grand rapids isn't that dangerous, I lived on every side of this damn city and that wasn't even the bad sides.
There is a difference between run down and dangerous. A lot of Detroit’s worst looking areas is not where most of the crime is. There are parts of Compton that look really nice, but are deadly. Grand Rapids is a gentrified city. It no longer has slums because there is a housing shortage...which pushed people into the inner SE side to reclaim the hood for the gentry. If you define hood by homicides, he did not drive through any of the worst hoods, like Baxter. Those hoods are being gen tried though...and do not look grimy but are where the gang banging is. Charlie is looking for grimey looking areas. You will not find that much in a Grand Rapids. Grand Rapids is going to become like Ann Arbor....where you have to be rich to live in the city.
@@MamaRayRayInTheKitchen No. Charlie is from Michigan. He is a brother from the West side of Detroit. This is his thing. He travels to different cities showing you a side of America that most people do not see. I give him his props. Check out his other videos. I think he focus on the more run down sections of cities.....because that is what people don’t often get to see. I used to live in Grand Rapids, as well as Detroit.....so I know the difference. The big difference is that GR hoods don’t have a jack boy culture like Detroit. If you walk around with something nice in Detroit....in the hood.....you better be prepared for someone telling you that they need that...lol. Run it. You don’t really have to worry about that in GR...but everything else go down the same.
My brother used to live with me. His first day here I get 10 missed calls in a few minutes around 9pm. When I finally called him back he said "dude I'm at a gas station at Eastern and Franklin and my car broke down. There are like 25 people in the parking lot talking about robbing the place, HELP!" He learned to never go there again.
I spent 32 years of my life in Michigan. Can't count the number of times I've been through GR. No disrespect, but you definitely missed some places on this hood tour lol. Grand Rapids in general though really ain't that bad. I like that city a lot.
It’s interesting that this guy didn’t even drive past places like heartside park and show what’s going on with the homeless right now. Seeing all those people without a shelter in the middle of winter/pandemic is truly the worst part of GR
They choose to live there. As a native of GR. There are so many programs for the homeless that its ridiculous. Being that I was homeless once. They just don't want to follow the rules. Who the fuc posted this.
I haven't lived in GR for a few years but friends tell me it's nuts. There used to be an underground area near the park that was accessed via a hole under the freeway near fartside park but I hear it was closed off, many homeless and runaways lived down there
@@wickedmonkeylover Last I knew Dwelling Place was defunct. I imagine the other shelter programs in the City and Kent County are just as overloaded as they are in the rest of the country.
The residents here are not losers! They are good people for the most part. Many people would never know this was my life from age 15 - 26 yrs. We were income but we had pride and goals. My heart goes out to those are there now. God Bless them all with health, wealth & a good life. 💕🙏💕
As we see, the so-called worst hoods has sustainable living. You’re not seeing miles of devastation and boarded up buildings. Driving thru back alleys and commercial lots won’t show well however people are maintaining.
Truth. The difference in quality of life in GR vs. Detroit "ghettos" is astounding. Everyone I know in the "hood" in GR has a vehicle, a cellphone, internet, etc. It's not like that in Detroit.
Don't know anything about the crime rate there, and many streets and allies need repair. The houses are old but lived in. Almost none boarded up like Detroit. Properties are pretty clean, and not full of trash - shows some respect for the properties. Perhaps poor and struggling, but there's hope.
Bookmagic Roe I live here. Actually only 1-2 miles away from where he’s driving, off eastern. Anyway, it’s not the worst city. Great economy, even post COVID. Just the price of living here is so fkn high ppl barely get by. I make 19.50 an hour, and still struggle. Rent on average here, for a 2 bed, is about $1,000.
Roads are being fixed, like at a super fast rate. Grand Rapids has strict housing codes, you'll get fined for stuff that's not up to par. Just like we'll get fined for overflowing our garbage.
I think every single city is going through something similar, there is a number of factors that contribute towards this.. obviously COVID, but 2nd to that is lenient bail policies and a lenient justice system
Stop it. Not all of Chicago or Detroit is dangerous. They are much bigger cities. They have areas in Detroit and Chicago way nicer than the nicest areas of a Grand Rapids. In other words, their hoods are worse, but their nice areas are better, by far, than what you find in a Grand Rapids. Show me a Palmer Woods, Green Acres, Indian Village, etc, in Grand Rapids city limits. It does not exists. Big cities have bigger extremes....that is all, but it averages out.
I always wonder who is it scary for? Leo's? The elitist? Because average people minding their own business never have problems. I've only had someone ask me, what are you doing in this neighborhood once. And it was at a convenient store where I needed water. Or maybe a few guys wanting my attention and all I say is I'm taken, thanx anyways. We can't live in fear.
@@Julzsavedandsetapart it’s scary for many mothers when their youth and young adults leave the house.....and they hear gun shots....sirens and not sure if they are safe.
@@antidome Not so. I lived in both cities. GR is small....the D is like 138 square miles. Hence, it has more of the bad and more of the good than GR. However, a greater percentage of GR is nice compared to the percentage of Detroit that is nice. That said, if you are AA...there is not that much absolute difference statistically. The big difference is that GR is majority white while Detroit is majority black, but the constant is that lives of AA is not that much different between the two cities.
@@victorynewz630 bro I'm from Detroit I moved to GR 2 different times for like 3 years yall city ain't bad and that's a good thing frfr u think its bad come to the west side of the D or go on the east side I bet u gon wanna take yo ass back home😂😂😂
Back when one of my parents still lived in East they would drive me to school in the morning and we’d almost always go down the intersecting road at about 5:14 with the apartments and it never seemed dangerous to me. Honestly it mostly just seemed like a lot of people who weren’t in good enough situations to live in the nicer part of town. On a side note: just because a place isn’t the “good part of town” doesn’t necessarily mean it’s the “bad part of town” it’s not just black and white.
I am a older grandma that is a Uber driver at night and yeah, this guy didn't drive any of the bad areas, I have no problems driving where he went. As a older grandma Ubering, I know I am in a bad area when my rider offers to sell me a piece because he is afraid for me driving in their hood. This guy could have just sat at Eastern and Franklin and just recorded for a while and would have had all kinds of interesting things to show.
I was thinking.. a badass feature for you to combine with these videos is a google maps route of where you went. That way we can see the area. I know we can just google it, but finding the area ourselves is a bit tougher. Just a thought. Great channel.
@@MetalDetroit 700 homicides in Chicago 323 in memphis tn 400 in new york 300 in LA all in 2020 thats what i mean by its nothing compared to other cities its all bad but grand rapids is where people that live in those citys want to be 💯
It's about time Charlie Boy you came to Grand Rapids you been doing video for years I have seen you do videos in Muskegon Heights Benton Harbor, Kzoo and you would have went all the way around and haven't even hit Grand Rapids but I'm glad you finally made it
You didn’t even drive past heartside park or other hotspots and show the extreme homelessness problem going on right now... just pointed the camera at police cars and dumpsters like what is this video trying to accomplish?
Aren't THESE American made Cars..??? Man, people who want to COMPLAIN about other people, will find ANYTHING to COMPLAIN about!!! I remember when it was PATRIOTIC to buy and own American made Cars, and your poking fun, and these are low income neighborhoods!!! Glad to see American made in Michigan!!!
I'm from Grand Rapids, born and raised. First off he's nowhere near the hood. He didn't drive through Eastern and Franklin, Baxter, Bates, Neland and Franklin, the black hills, I could go on. Secondly, GR doesn't really have a terrible area, not for real. This city was rated one of the safest places to live in Michigan. Smh
Good job, you drove through the sustainable hood. Where homes are filled and majority of the houses are up to code. Plus this is the winter, come back when it's warm out.
For those who say he not from Grand Rapids, you are right. He was born and lived in Detroit. A few years ago I was watch some of his videos. To this day I generally know the major streets/avenues in west Detroit myself. I was born in Detroit and grew up in Detroit and later Livonia. The area in Detroit I grew up in was north of Grand River Avenue, east of Telegraph Road, and south of 7 Mile. We moved to Livonia to be closer to the Ford Motor Company dad worked at. When I got out of the USAF we settled down in Kentwood and later Wyoming. I know that picture on Franklin at 2:37 is Social Services building. Been to that place many times before. What you see in this video is what you DON'T have here like in Detroit. That is street after street in central Detroit of either burnout houses or cleared out burned houses. Now in my life, I don't have money to move to the Detroit area let alone a mile away. I list medical problems that can happen to anyone regardless of race. One that I have is Sarcoidosis. Bernie Mac died from Pneumonia and scar tissue from previous Sarcoidosis was a factor in his death. Another person who died from autoimmune disease was Reggie White who played last team was the Green Bay Packers. Black working men and women that are doing to support their family I give a thumbs up for you. You are persons of value. I haven't felt that way about myself because of medical reasons these recent years. Bye
Gurl this ain't the hood. The police are always there cause of racism. Believe my family is from Chicago and they feel so much more safer when they visit me in gr.
@@wickedmonkeylover Racism never crossed my mind though I did think possibly robbery because of all the police cars. I was raised not be racist and to love everyone always to look for the good in people.
We have very few police in GR actually...Garfield Park has only 2 cops assigned to it, and thousands of homes in their beat. There are reports of gunshots daily from that neighborhood.....
Let me tell you this, as a former Detroiter, Detroit gets a bad rap. I once believed the hype about how bad Detroit was until I started visiting and living in other big cities. Same things go on daily. Many people who talk about how bad Detroit, Flint or Saginaw is have actually never even been in those cities. How many people writing how bad Detroit and other cities are, in comparison, have been victimized by a crime while visiting one of the so called terrible cities? I think most peoples opinions come from the media. You might know that it is safe to walk or go to most parts of Grand Rapids....because you don’t see or read about such things bad happening being shown on the media or because you have gone there many times without incident. However, because of fear and what you see in the media, you would not try that in Detroit or Flint. Nothing would probably happen to you in those cities either....you are just too scared already to prove yourself wrong.. The author of this Channel, for over 5 years now, has gone into the most crime ridden cities and the worst neighborhoods in theses cities, and from what I can tell, nothing has ever happened to him. He has never been shot or robbed or jumped. Watch his videos....he gets out his car in the hoods and at night, goes into hood party stores. He should not be able to do this if all these places are as bad a people think they are. I have read comments where people ask if they could do what the author does....but as a white guy. You see....that is the real fear. Many white people fear they will be attacked for being white in a black area. If nothing happens to a white person in a poor black community, whites will say the community is “safe” and not bad. There could be African Americans getting shot in drive-bys in the same community, weekly, and all type of assault and crimes among AA.....but as long as nothing happens to white peoples....they will say it is a safe neighborhood. History has turned African Americans onto themselves, which is why AA can be catching hell others feel it is “safe”. I recommend watching “Black Bottom” on Netflix. What happened to the Character “Toledo” in the end perfectly reflects the root of violence in our communities to this day. Displaced aggression and frustration turned inwards towards each other.
I honestly understand precisely what your saying, but its not an American thing its the same repetitious cycle time and time again, history is always repeating, it has no relevance on race, but i agree that the illusion is always present, humans cant be free because were controlled by people who through their power are in fact "god" like in theory
Anybody who thinks this is bad is soft or didnt grow up in a city in the midwest or east coast... looks like a normal working class neighborhood to me. If you look up his videos on flint or Detroit. With all the run down and abandoned houses that take up entire blocks or half of the neighborhoods... to me that's hood. These areas only look rough because its winter. The roads being messed up is normal for Michigan unfortunately..
I can understand. I was born and raised in Saginaw and moved to the GR area twenty years ago. There are places in Saginaw that I would not drive through in the day time. Yet in GR, I've never got that sort of feeling.
Riding through mostly Burton Heights and Wyoming and some parts of Southeast, it’s some crime there but shit just started getting some what serious the last past year, nothing to be afraid of though lol
It’s like only 1% of the city stop overreacting. Y’all can’t expect cities to be 100% perfect. Go check out some European and Latin American hoods then you might start to be grateful
I used to go to a comedy show a friend had at a hotel off of Anne Street. Older part of town. Fairly well maintained. Still far better than half of what I've seen in places like Baltimore, Philly and Detroit.
As someone who was born in Detroit and raised in East Grand Rapids this is night and day but I agree. Whenever I’m going places or have family around I always avoid Franklin, Hall, the area near the National and Lake Michigan. But it’s still nicer than Flint, Saginaw or most of Detroit
You should’ve went on the north and the west and up franklin you didn’t explore enough plus you gotta come during the summer nights because that’s when shit really slap
I used to live in Burton Heights, and it was crazy but not not so bad. Now I live in Detroit, and people are more friendly and helpful! My neighbors are treating me like family :)
There are hoods there other than in Detroit? Where else in Michigan may I ask? What about near Sterling Heights? My kids are there I really need to know, thanks!
The Sterling Hts area is pretty nice and stable. Its a little sketchy in Warren off of 8 mile. Detroit is very hit or miss, generational poverty. Ive only been to Grand Rapids a few times, it didnt seem that bad.
Sterling Heights was voted year after year one of the safest city’s to live in I believe across America per their capita. Really the only bad parts of the area is when you go south of 9 mile. Detroit. Hamteamick, highland park, Redford. Dearborn. All very hit or miss city’s
GR doesn’t really have much of a hood or anything. It’s pretty safe overall if you aren’t involved with bad sht but as with any city there are areas that aren’t as nice
frfr, i mean as long as yu aren’t wit the wrong people yu good frfr. nobody fucks wit anyone unless they provoked for the most part. like nowadays here in GR yu can walk down any street & be good. it’s all about who yu hang wit. cuz 9/10 those the mfkers that’s gone get yu in trouble here
I remember being dragged to a goth bar on division Avenue that looked worse than these hoods, but that was 30 years ago and I was already half-cut when we got there.
Just moved out of the West side. Lived there for three years (in the poorer area) with no problems at all. Our street had a knifing and car break-ins though.
Yea they got shot at my job. He was right to the right of the tire shop it happened at.construction kept him from back there. He didn’t hit the dirty west or the black hills
@@donaldwalker5579 the black hills ain't so black these days, its more like little Mexico. I used to live a couple houses up from the party store on Clyde park and plett(just north of Burton). There are only house's on the south side of the street, but cops were there on a normal basis, the street to the south behind the scrap yard was worse, even so I never had any problems.
Yeah. Poor? Yeah. Seedy? Hell yeah. Dangerous? Not very. My aunt and uncle lived on Palace for almost thirty years. Worst they ever had to deal with was neighbor kids shortcutting through the backyard.
