The Grand Seiko "Snowflake" is a category-best luxury watch with a brand-defining dial and Seiko's signature Spring Drive technology. In this video, Tim Mosso showcases the history and merits of the most recognizable Grand Seiko watch of the modern era. A buyer's guide of pricing, sizing, and features provides viewers with the background to make the choice of whether or not to add the Grand Seiko Snowflake to their watch collections. This is the "Collector's Guide."
Although often compared to the Rolex Datejust and the Omega Seamaster Aqua Terra, the current Grand Seiko SBGA211 and the prior SBGA011 are distinct enough to stand apart from the competition and succeed on their own merits. Originally launched in 2010, the Snowflake is a rare Grand Seiko for which the factory itself was responsible for the nickname. The Shinshu Watch Studio that produces Spring Drive Grand Seiko watches is located in Shiojiri, Nagano Prefecture, a region that is blanketed with snow during the winter months. The rolling ridges of snow drifts near the Grand Seiko factory lend their texture and name to the dial of the Grand Seiko Snowflake.
At 41mm in diameter, the Snowflake is a sizable all-around men's watch that wears light on the wrist thanks to its titanium construction. Although Grand Seiko describes this variant of titanium as "high intensity," its ability to take and hold a polish suggests that the material is similar to the "grade five titanium" used by European watchmakers. All polished surfaces on the Grand Seiko Snowflake are buffed to a shine by the tin plate finishing method that Grand Seiko brands "Zaratsu polish." This method, which requires approximately three years to master, ensures that the Snowflake can be regarded as a true hand-finished watch. The Snowflake is equipped from the factory with a matching titanium bracelet and single-fold deployant clasp.
The snowflake dial requires at least six steps to complete; stamping and silver plating are two of the most important steps. Additional diamond-cut hands, hour indices, date window, and logo letters are crafted by specialized artisans who dedicate their full-time attention to creating these components for Grand Seiko watches. The fired blue stainless steel seconds hand glides smoothly in the distinctive fashion that remains virtually unique to Seiko Spring Drive.
Grand Seiko caliber 9R65 provides 72-hours of power reserve with automatic winding. A dial-side power reserve indicator keeps track of the remaining mainspring energy. The Spring Drive technology permits monthly precision of +/- 15 seconds, but it is not a conventional quartz caliber. The Spring Drive technology employs no motors, batteries, or capacitors. This showcase for Japanese watchmaking genius required all of the years between 1977 and 2005 to bring to market in its automatic form.
A unidirectional governing wheel driven by spring torque creates an induced electrical current; this current powers a quartz oscillator; the quartz timing unit controls an electromagnetic braking force that speeds or slows the unidirectional governing wheel; the wheel is geared to the hands and the time display. Water resistance of 100 meters ensures that the Grand Seiko SBGA211 can provide service as a sports watch when necessary. Hacking seconds and a quickset date permit easy setting of the watch.
The Grands Seiko Snowflake SBGA211 has a retail price of $5,800 in the United States, and it includes a three-year Grand Seiko watch warranty. Prior to 2017, the Snowflake's reference code was SBGA011, and its dial featured a prominent "Seiko" signature in place of the later "Grand Seiko" atop the dial.

Was able to hold it today for the first time. Wow, that thing is light! Instant desire! Already own the SBGA203, and I was at the store to check out the blue Black Bay 58. Once I held it, instantly lost interest in the Black Bay 58 and Oyster Perpetual 41. The SBGA211 is next. Left the store sad knowing the lone watch in the store will be quickly sold.

The polished titanium has a look that no other metal quite matches. I don't know if it's really that much harder to do with that than on their steel cases, but Seiko seems to be the only maker actually doing it to this level with this metal.

Polishing titanium without orange peel ripple is difficult. Grand Seiko does it well and over fairly large surfaces compared to many other brands. Grand Seiko also seems to to polish more complex shapes given the unconventional cases like the 9S, 44GS, 62GS, etc. Best, Tim

So weight is a mark of class is it? Titanium is streets ahead of stainless steel, lighter and stronger.
@jswede1
@jswede1 2 года назад
@japanwatchconnection it is in no way cheap looking. Brushed on top with polished center link edges, and polished bevels on outer links and brushed sides. All this on titanium no less. Much more intricate than ANY Rolex. Open up the clasp and try to twist it and there is literally no give. Zero. The bracelet links have some give when twisted and I assume that by design - gives a little, then says stop. I only know the 211, not the 011, but you are way off and I think being fooled by the lightness of titanium.
@jswede1
@jswede1 2 года назад
@japanwatchconnection Articulate your reasoning then. And tell me a bracelet more intricate than it in the price range. Even anything under $10k - double this watch's price. Omega and Rolex have never had the craftsmanship this bracelet has on any watch they've ever made. Anyway, explain.
@jswede1
@jswede1 2 года назад
@japanwatchconnection No you are not alone. You’re singing a very boring, very overused, and a very wrong, refrain about grand Seiko bracelets. i’m not talking about divers, I’ll take the Rolex divers. This is not a diver, it’s not even a sports watch, so there’s no use for micro adjustment. (if this was your major gripe with the seiko bracelet, then why did you call it cheaply made?). Not sure what your first sentence said, but I have a sub 16610, and the more recently made Tudor Blackbay. The Blackbay probably has the better bracelet feel. The idea that the fit of the bracelet against the Seiko‘s case is lesser than the Rolex is absurd. You’re 011 must have been poorly made. And I’ll say again, Rolex has never made a bracelet with even 1/2 half the finishing of this grand Seiko bracelet.

At 5:55 he mentions they use stainless steel for greater durability. This is inaccurate and I’m not sure why people always get this wrong. On the Brinell Hardness test they press a steel ball into the material to find the diameter of the indentation. 316L stainless steel (what Grand Seiko uses on all their steel watches) the hardness is measured at 217. Grade 5 Titanium (what Grand Seiko uses on all their titanium watches, including SBGA211) the hardness is measured at 334. Assuming the scale is linear, grade 5 titanium is around 50% harder than 316L SS.

I have SBGA211 and Lange's SAXONIA. Overall, SAXONIA's pairing is very comfortable, thin, and simple enough, and the size is friendly for me personally. However, SAXONIA has a few drawbacks, as it requires high demands on clothing pairing. Moreover, SAXONIA is a very unique design, simple enough to not have a second hand, calendar, or power reserve display. It's a special watch, very special. On the other hand, SBGA211 is a very "tool-like" watch, not made of precious metal, automatic winding, and has all the essential elements of a wristwatch, including mediocre steel hands, etc. It doesn't require high demands on clothing pairing. So I prefer this one for daily commuting. But for important occasions where I need to wear a dress shirt or a suit, I only choose SAXONIA. There is no superiority or inferiority between the two watches, they are like two different weapons for me, only used in different situations.

It's a combination of both sport watch and dress watch. But a lume for a sport watch? Lumes are useless and ugly. Rolex is one of the only brands that still integrate them and that's only for recognition purposes rather than for usefulness. This is mostly a dress watch because of the clasp. Smooth, (well) hidden clasps (unlike a clasp buckles) and no micro-adjustments are usually an indication that you are dealing with a dress watch when it comes to metal bracelets.

Amazing dial, amazing case finishing, amazing movement but I still find the case design a little ugly.

Hey Tim, don’t you think there’s absolutely no connection between GS’s logo and their proud Japanese heritage and culture? Where’s the spirit of Takumi reflected on the medieval european typeface, contemporary to Johannes Gutenberg? Grand Seiko is a great XX century japanese company, that wants to project its highest levels of technology and innovation - such as the Spring Drive - and they've achieved undisputed levels of accuracy while displaying the highest quality finish ever, even under a macro lens! And yet they're brand image is portrayed by a horrible logo that has nothing to do with their culture or what they stand for as a brand in the XXI century! I know the clever Rolex story and I understand that, 60 years ago, GS marketing needs would have been to consciently 'maskerade' as a western company in order to be perceived less oriental and better accepted among their customers audience, as well as the other swiss watchmakers. But to maintain a mistake and persist on doing so for so long...? Besides, any reputable design scholar will quickly tell us that the GS logo is only the justa position of two letters, and that can hardly be considered as a real logo, designwise. Japanese graphic design (particularly brand design) is recognizably quite advanced and groundbreaking, at least since the early 70s, and Japan's callygraphy is a very much venerated element in the country's culture. So my point is mainly, why would a company so invested with the look and finish in its product's face and dial (80 step?!?) would disregard the negative effect of its poor 'logo' on what you’ve just called “the best dial in the world”? That is simply the opposite of design and mainly contrary to their spirit of Takumi, as they so emphatically advertise. Let me know your thoughts. Cheers!

Three glaring errors in the first minute. 5641-5000 was a production watch, not a prototype, the first Grand Seiko Spring Drive reference was launched in 2004, not 2005 (although the first Seiko Spring Drive watch was launched in 1999), and SBGA011 was introduced in 2005, not 2010. I do think channels like this one owe a duty to their large audiences to put a little more effort into ensuring they communicate accurate historical facts. Dare I continue to watch past the first minute?

Three seconds later - no, the watch was not nicknamed the "Snowflake" by the designers. They called it "Yukishiro" which translates to Snow White.

Too much hype around this brand. Resellers are going to run the prices up on these too. Get'em before they're hot.

I don't know Tim but every time i see GS in real or one of these videos, i just feel don't satisfied with their case designs and proportions! Although i do love to watch the "Spring Drive" movement of Japanese miracle to the horology world, at the end of the day i prefer Swiss designs.

Dial is great. Case looks too old fashioned and the bracelet is not up to the price category. Servicing Spring Drive watches is also a costly pain and waste of time

Why put all the effort into a set and video but then make the bizarre choice of wearing sport sunglasses upside down on your head? Are you trying to look like a bad guy from a Saved by The Bell episode?
