Today, DJ Peach Cobbler dissects Grand Theft Auto 3...a game he loves...but no longer likes.
I always do these descriptions in the third-person. I don’t know why
.…
I really loved Grand Theft Auto 3, but I no longer like it. This video hurt, viewers. It really hurt. Grand Theft Auto is an incredibly important franchise to gaming history, and was my introduction to gaming, but Grand theft Auto 3 is...not fun. Rockstar Games has gone so far from the roots that is this game, and in the process, rendered it obsolete in every way. This video made me feel old, viewer. It made me sad.
But I hope you enjoyed it anyway.

@@peters.9371 It was. GTA3 wasn't so much limited by the technology of the time (as opposed to VC or SA), but rather by being the first of it's kind. Like Cobbler said in the video, it's easy to point out what didn't work or could improve after the fact, but the same holds true for development. As the concept of the game gets iterated upon, so too do the tools and technology (and workflow etc.) used to create it.

But what makes this channel so great is the top-notch deadpan comedy that comes with it. So many other times I see the jokes is video essays fall flat, often times for sticking out, or trying to get more out of the joke than they can, but you're jokes are at an almost nonstop pace. I am sure a number of them fly over my head, and that's a good thing, as it makes it so a. I can rewatch a video to find even more humor, and b. It keeps the feeling of the video strong, not having unbalanced humor as I mentioned many similar videos do.

It's also interesting how GTA's 2D roots were still visible in GTA3: it's possible to set your camera to top-down, and you won't miss much due to the way the missions/areas were designed and peculiarities of gameplay like inability to duck. GTA: VC did feel truly 3D though.
@sirizalot
@sirizalot 7 месяцев назад
There's more than that - GTA III retains a lot of the arcade mechanics of the 2D games. Here's just one of them. The way those games worked was by getting points. You couldn't do anything with them, but once you had enough points, you could move on to the next chapter or level. The games had no story, and how you got the points was up to you. You could get those points in a few ways. The first way was by doing a whole bunch of grunt work given to you by people over payphones, often with absurd time limits and no way to retry, should you fail. The second way was by commiting violent crime. Crashing into cars, stealing cars, blowing them up, killing people - all of it would give you points in true arcade fashion. That mechanic is still there, for some reason, in GTA III. When you crash into cars, steal them or blow them up, you gain money from nowhere. Money in GTA III is practically as useless as the points in GTA 1 and 2, and works in a very similar way. To access the final story mission you needed to have a certain amount of money. The only other use money has in GTA III is to buy weapons, which you can beat the game without doing once. GTA Vice City seems to be where Rockstar ultimately decided what kind of games they wanted GTA to be. But GTA III is an amalgamation of two very different types of games that simply don't mix well, executed poorly.

I have to add that despite all the double crossing we do in this game, it never bothered me as to how our character feels about it. We basically play an opportunist who starts off being double crossed by our girlfriend. Then we get double crossed AGAIN by Salvatore because of Maria. It's street politics. 🤣🤣🤣🤣. This was the first GTA game I played. I just remember being blown away by it. I had just turned 30 but was totally caught off guard

GTA3 is still the source of my favorite GTA story: there's an early mission, where you're tasked with assassinating a guy. Whenever you approach him, though, he runs to his car and drives off, making the mission an absolute bitch to accomplish with the options available to you. Except... There's an earlier mission, which tasks you with stealing a car, getting it to a certain garage to rig up a car bomb, and returning the car to where you found it. So, after what must have been well over twenty failed attempts at this little digital man's life, I had the bright idea to... NOT approach him at first, but instead, go around the area to the other side, and wouldn't you know it, there was his car... You already are where this is going, I'm sure. And yes, it worked beautifully. What really gets me is, you'd never be allowed to do that in GTA 4/5 or RDR; you'd be given a failure state just for going too far away from your mark. Hell, you'd probably be given a fail for stealing the mark's car. I guess that over-guidance is what eventually turned me off the series. Early GTA felt like you were lost in a first-world foreign country, but you're in a nice part of town and have enough scraps of the local language to get around and have a good time. Nu-GTA feels like being taken on a guided tour through an authoritarian state, where you'll be disappeared the instant you step out of line. Anyway, neat video, I haven't watched it yet.

Damn, I still love to play GTA III. I love this game. And you are right. But I still love it. Also, Claude's silence gives him that cold blood vibe. Like, he does anything to progress through his path to revenge on Catalina and doesn't feel anything for people around him. At the time GTA 3 WAS over the top. It wasn't just novel, it was everything GTA V is today. The closest we had of GTA 3 at the time was GTA/GTA 2, both of which are literally just shooting and driving tiny dots, and sometimes you pick up payphones. Crime sandboxes weren't new, but before that they weren't that interesting. It was the larger scope of GTA 3 that really brought the formula to work.

I'd say silence suits Claude because he's meant to be perceived as a silent, obedient and emotionless psychopath. To think of it that way, he's way scarier than cartoonishly Vaas-esque Trevor and any other protagonist since. Any bit of personality or emotion would make him humane, and he's supposed as inhumane as Manhunt protagonists. It's just who he is - a ruthless killing machine. Tommy is ambitious and greedy, Niko is broken and torn apart by guilt and revenge, Trevor exists entirely for Z generation, Michael is a walking midlife crisis, while Claude is... A complete psycho

There's a reason I love this game... and it's atmosphere. Yes yes, Vice City may be the most spot on in terms of atmosphere, but... the dark and gritty tone of Liberty City has always stuck with me. The rain, the music... the vehicles, the sound of npc's chatting. I put Clair de lune in the mp3 folder (pc version), stole an Infernus, and switched onto the mp3 player radio station. It started raining, and the only thing I could hear was the haunting piano melody, the rain, and the revving of my Infernus' engine, I cried. It was the only video game that ever made me cry.

I disagree, one of GTA 3's primary focus was the freedom. The fact that you could do anything you want like it was your playground was amazing in a realistic environment that we are familiar with that still puts lots of games today to shame, the car handling is still fun to drive in and even collectibles felt more rewarding then later entries. Almost no other game has been able to recapture that dark foggy atmosphere in a way GTA 3 did

@@malletUsergaming I said good games since GTA 3 was just that. Cyberpunk and the new SR has been shit on by both critics and the average player. My point being is it’s not a good game anymore. If we should put GTA 3 to the same test even vice city released the year after or saints row 2 (I can agree with you on every SR title after that) makes it seem like a boring soulless game.
