We'd seen ray traced shadows before in the current-gen refresh of GTA 5 - but very recently, Rockstar went back and improved the game still further, adding RT reflections. On top of that, very minor issues we had with the Xbox Series version of the game were also addressed (likely before the RT upgrade). In this video, Oliver Mackenzie shows us the improvements and limitations of the new GTA 5 fidelity mode.

Rockstar actually were planning to but since the GTA Trilogy Remaster bombed both critically and financially, they stopped production on the RDR 1 and 2 remasters. Including the GTA 4 remaster.

@@Rebel_at_Heart I mean we are talking about Rockstar. The one who made RDR2 run at native 4K on One X. I think they are testing if it's viable or not. My guess is that they will include RT Shadow but not RT reflection but who knows.

I wouldn't set my hopes too high for GTA6 because they might still release it for last-gen (PS4, Xbox one), especially knowing how greedy rockstar is. If GTA6 is cross-gen means PS5, Xbox series will be held back no matter how good they can scale the graphics engine.

I really wish Fidelity Mode had a 40FPS option. I would use that over Performance RT.

Yes, I totally agree. 40FPS is a much better way to play. If there was a way to make 40FPS or 45FPS the minimum standard, it would provide excellent playability and allow developers to push consoles a bit further by not forcing them to target 60FPS while dropping details. 40FPS at super high resolution and details would be amazing

@@Haywood-Jablomie problem is 60hrz is still the standard for most tvs we would have to make 120hrz the standard for 40 to fit 45 don't break into 60 or 120 well so not great really will get tearing, and vrr is best not used below 48fps

@@Haywood-Jablomie Yeah, I play Spider-Man, The Last of Us and more at 40FPS when given the option. I have a big TV so I try to stick to 4K or very close to it as much as possible. 1440P or 1080P at higher frames just doesn’t cut it.

FYI: The "cubemaps" generated by the engine are actually dual paraboloid maps, which are similar to cubemaps but only take up two sides instead of six as a less expensive measure. Problem is that your geometry has to be sufficiently tesselated for the reflections to display properly.

Nobody is pointing this out but ever since they added the RT reflections in the game , it broke the cube map reflections for glass across the other modes. In performance and performance RT Glass reflects nothing now. It’s especially noticeable on cars, but tinted windows it just looks like the glass isn’t even there. They don’t even reflect the skybox like how it use to. Even ps4/ps3 had this implanted.

I am so happy that developers let us choose now. Most people prefer the RT performance mode, but I'm a huge sucker for ray traced reflections, so I'm really glad they give me this option, despite most of the player base choosing the 60fps mode.

thats because its easier to aim with 60 fps and fly aircraft, i notice a overhaul in the aiming in general. with auto aim off it was much harder to make shots in first person with the assault rifles but on ps5 it feels more responsive.

I am with you on prioritising a more detailed experience rather than a more fluid one, given that a choice of either or more or less has to be made. And this enhancement might have had to do with why I find chrome rims, for example, more bearable than before switching console generation around the turn of the year, when a banal to gimmick kind of impression tended to accompany said aspect.

Its pretty damn close…Ive been having more fun w this game over the last minth than i ever did. Im noticing all the tiny little things that all add up. Detail of the roads themselves, feel of the car on all surfaces. Reflections, lighting, clarity, and yes the car mirrors actually show whats behind you now..

I remember thinking we were gonna get that on PS4 , imagine my disappointment. And then on release day for ps5, ugh but we're getting there. I'm sure GTA 6 will have real reflections. It can't be any worse that what they have now right?

Same thing I said, had this been a launch feature then I would've played with RT on in story mode on my XSX. When it comes to online though it's performance mode only.

Yea there is simply no going back from 60fps. On PC you can use RT at 60fps with any RTX 30 series, but current gen consoles can't handle it.

If they can retrofit RT reflections to make Fidelity more worth using, I hope they'll also add in VRR Mode so we on console can enjoy it at 40fps and make performance mode more worth it by giving that 120fps.

It's a legacy game and engine that started on the Xbox 360 so the pop in and other issues will always be there since the game currently is a enhanced edition not a full remaster.

@@thanksbetotap "native" and "port" cannot be used together as they are the opposite of each other, also all versions of the game that aren't the xbox 360 and ps3 versions are console ports of the xbox one and ps4 version. it's simply an updated version of that same xbox one and ps4 port so it will still have it's limits, hence why the PC version also has this issue despite the fact that consoles don't compare to a top of the line PC.

@@Extremexboxplayer Native and port are effectively synonyms in this case. Meaning, they were ported to the newer AMD silicon as native support taking full advantage of the hardware. Meaning, they’re obviously not running emulated or in a VM or in some other form of containerized backwards compatibility process or via translation layer approach like WINE.

You won't ever get RT reflections with mods... the only thing you will get with a mod is Screen Space GI, which is basically raytraced lighting for lights that are onscreen.

I always felt that RT reflections were the most ideal target for the first full fledged implementation of ray tracing on current gen hardware. They can be done fairly cheaply compared to global illumination and deliver massive visual improvements over currently available technologies for handling reflections (cubemaps and SSR) so it makes the most sense to me that they should be done right and implemented in all games going forward.

I don't know about that. Ray-traced reflections in Cyberpunk on PC are just as demanding as ray-traced global illumination. I agree that they make more of an easily noticeable difference, but I think that ray-traced sun shadows make even more of a difference when you're out running about the world.

Quite the opposite, they're very demanding. Ray traced reflections with decent performance is only possible when roughness isn't simulated like in this case, or the upcoming Forza 8

RT GI is more transformative for any game with real-time lighting and about as intense on the GPU. Reflections are better for games with fixed time of day. Shadows are actually the cheapest effect by far so long as they mix RT and raster shadows. (SOTTR in Medium mode has lovely RT shadows for small light sources, raster shadows for sun, and runs extremely quickly.)

For me, the ray tracing patch was enough to buy it again (was in sale) for Series X. Bought it years ago for PS4 & had only 1 playthrough. In terms of modes, I'm deciding from game to game. In this case I play in fidelity mode, simply because it looks really nice & the RT reflections adding a lot to the immersion imo. The stable 30fps cap doesn't bother me. So far, all GTAs were 30 on consoles, so what!? Of course it would be even better with Ray tracing AND 60fps, but the way it runs now doesn't mean I can't enjoy playing it 🤷‍♂️

In some ways I feel like a title like GTA V would benefit more from ray traced GI rather than reflections - accurate GI is a much more immersive update (vs rasterized GI) compared to ray traced reflections vs cube maps or other solutions. Don't get me wrong, both are great, but with a limited budget, I think I might prefer the GI

Also I see my reflection in the gas station doors. I specifically sat there looking at it while taking a break from taxi missions. I was looking at all the products they had and could see Franklin in the reflected glass…🤷‍♂️

Seems like there's enough performance overhead for better RT reflection detail (or at least some lower hanging fruit like SSR and cubemap improvements) now that the game has dynamic resolution scaling... so I don't see this as more than a barebones effort tbh. Doesn't really compete with other transformative implementations of RT seen in other games this gen. Maybe it could have gotten there with FSR 2 or some in-house upscaler to free up more resources.

Rockstar found time to add more ray tracing effects to a nine year old game but couldn’t find away to add 60fps to a game less than half its age. Looking at you RD2 😒

That's why i am glad that i switched to PC. Played it first on the one x. 2 months ago on a 3080. 1440p, everything maxed out and still around 100 fps. That game looks so good. If you ever played on a high end rig you will never want to use a console anymore. Or Cyberpunk with mods which pushes the game even further. Totally awesome

huh so weird, that is the only thing consoole player wants. So no graphic fidelity upgrade that us pc player had access to since the start? Just a friendly reminder that console equivalent settings on pc are mostly at medium settings.

@@JDG-vn4ti same here tbh. 2012 game originaly. But must say im quiet impressed with the RT. It's just that devs don't care about console players wishes for higher performance and often go for visuals that looks good for sure, but they neglect the optimisation most of this generation

Looks cool, but don't wanna drop down to 30fps for that. When are they gonna give us this on PC? my 3080 could probably handle the rt mode in 4k60 with a few settings dropped/dlss applied.

For me it's enough to hold me over until GTA 6. Also with my TV I put the default settings (yes with the game mode on) and it actually makes the Fidelity Mode look like it has higher than 30FPS. I now use that always

The problem with game mode is the input lag. It's not bad for driving and casual stuff, but combat/aiming is absolutely terrible in that mode lol. The delay drives me crazy after a while.

All I wanted was a simple 60fps patch for RDR 2 on PS5. They could just uncap the framerate for the ps4 pro version running through backwards compatibility, I would be happy with it.

Would be nice to have it running at native 4k on PS5 too. The resolution is unfortunately quite a bit lower than what the One X was running due to PS4 Pro being less powerful

I would rather a actual port as the image is not great on PS4 Pro due to the very bad upscale they used, even a native 1440p 60fps would look miles better than the current PS4 Pro image.

The reflection are fantastic the distance reflections aren't there as you see in Spider-man. But theres alot more detail closer to the reflected object. The chrome body paint is almost a dream come true, when I saw bfv use rt reflections I thought how would the chrome paint look in gta 5 with rt? And now we know. Also this is pretty impressive that this is just updated and without sacrificing anyother area of the game

Oh hey, was wondering if you were planning on covering this. Surprising they'd add it in, but it also raises the curious question of if they're going to do something of a 'Fortnite' trick by testing new tools and graphical features in the old game with the intent of using it as 'beta testing' for GTA6 in the future. At least, that's one of the reasons I can think of for them not rolling this out on PC. Otherwise it's a bit odd.

Red Dead Redemption 2 has largely served as a "beta test" for the upcoming GTA 6. If you've seen those leaked videos, it's pretty clear that the weather, the vegetation, the lighting, the characters' skin and hair and the interaction system screams RDR2. They are clearly using the, and improving upon, RDR2 build of RAGE for GTA 6. Same thing happened with GTA 5 during its early development - it was looking almost like GTA 4.

@@noclip_st Turned out to be very different though, I think GTA 6 will be more silimar to RDR 2 than GTA 5 is to GTA 4. I assumed they were only borrowing the assets from GTA 4 but it was overall not very similar, from what I saw in the 2011 trailer

I think the pc already has this via unofficial graphics mods. Unless every car is straight out of the nearest dealership, a real car door can have it's reflections far more on par with the non RT version (hazy, simplified). Object shadows accurately reflected is an improvement but they don't matter much in anything fast paced unless you prefer to play the game as an open world walking simulator (im sure plenty did this when they first played the game and ignored the missions)

Looks nice, when you deliberately bother to look at them. Otherwise you won't even notice or care. I'd take an tr lighting overhaul too make it look real over reflections any day. the improvements to shadows was the main area that needed to be fixed and that was done already

Nope, their geometry hasn’t been fixed and still use real time cube maps. But if RT reflections are in for this update, then you can be damned sure they’ll be sure to have working mirrors for GTA6.

Expecting them to go the extra mile and update it out of the goodness of their hearts when it requires all that extra work is asking a bit much. its an upgraded pc port, which came out in 2015, so its more like 8 years old. and you have to keep in mind that its at 4k, pretty much max settings, AND ray tracing.
