Salvatore "Sam" Anello, the Indiana man accused of negligent homicide in the death of granddaughter Chloe Wiegand, said what happens in the criminal investigation is not important because “the worst thing” has already happened. In an exclusive interview with CBS News correspondent David Begnaud, Anello spoke for the first time about the moment 18-month-old fell from his grasp out of a cruise ship window in Puerto Rico.

Unless of course you wanted to try your case in the media. This way, those who have never been on a ship might actually believe you thought there was glass there. This way, when you call it a "children's play area" parents (who have also never been on this ship) get up in arms. Then, when you want to sue the cruise line for your own mistakes, people might be more sympathetic.

Also, surely irrespective of whether colour-blindness is an issue or not, even if you are unable to see a particular colour, or to see it well - you still perceive it as a ‘shade’ when it’s next to clear glass or no glass at all in a sliding window frame. If you watch a colour movie on an old black and white tv, you can still see the movie - just in shades of grey instead of colour. Colour - blind people see some colours but can’t differentiate red/green or blue/purple for example. I hate fake criers too.

@Susan Fagan I can't help but wonder why the grandfather was asked to babysit an energetic toddler and wasn't with her parents or properly supervised in the ship's childcare center? It doesn't make sense to me since I (as a grandmother myself) do not have the energy to run after a small child like Chloe. Why was he put in that situation?

I saw the cruise ship video a few days ago. This death was no accident. And the grandfather clearly knew what the window was all about. You can see him walking over to the window and looking out of it, right before lifting his granddaughter up, toward the window. He needs to go to prison for deliberately harming this child.

I believe he murdered that child to sue for money. I won't be surprised if the parents are on it too. This was no accident, this was for money. You could see he entered the room and was contemplating the plan. He went, looked out the window 1st, Annalised it, and then went ahead. How can he put his head out of the glass for 8 seconds, come back, and then think it was magically closed. Also, the glasses are tinted, but he now says he's color blind. They want money. And that child was the paycheck, in their sick minds.

Watching them on interviews they are a little too complacent with believing the grandfather did nothing wrong and that it was the cruise line who is at fault despite it being obvious whose fault it really is. I feel like it was pre planned by all of them, they wasted no time with that lawsuit.

dmblake4 Suing the cruise ship is called “taking the advice of your lawyer.” By putting a lawsuit out there in the public sphere it shifts blame to an ambiguous 3rd party in peoples’ minds. By not suing it’s basically saying “I’m responsible.” When you’re facing a serious, high profile crime it isn’t the place to grandstand on your high horse. If your experienced lawyers say you should sue or go to prison for life, you F-ing sue.

I think I would take full responsibility, but I would add that a sign of some sort to signify the possibility of an open window definitely would'nt hurt. Just on the off chance it could prevent something like this alone would go a long way imo. No blame to the ship, and I think the old man is wise enough to agree, he doesn't even want to blame the ship i think these are his sentiments as well. May the granddaughter rest in peace and I hope this man can find some peace himself, I forgive him.

Baltazar :3 - The only question I have, why didn’t he just hold the baby close to him while she was up higher? You know when parents pick up their kids they hold them about chest high, but they are resting in the parents arms, I don’t understand what possessed him to physically hold the baby over the railing. That’s the only part I find a little off in his story, and that he held her over the railing for much longer than he says. So I feel like he’s covering up his actions here.

i cannot form a hypothesis on what I think gramps might or might not be ok with without a little more info from your analogy. Does the difference in size and weight stay the same between factual event fallen/dropper and in the analogy presented? Do other concepts transfer over as well? IE the toddler (RIP) did not understand the potential danger and had great trust in the holder- would gramps be spared the fear of a potential fall by trust in his holder as well? I ask in seriousness because I read your question and two pictures flashed in my mind- gramps fearing for his life being held over the rail by a socially frustrated beta silverback gorilla that hasn't scored in years and smokes camel straights like a chimney and gramps being held over the rail by his somehow alive and 18ft tall grandpa blind with trust and awe. I didn't sense the father-daughter ties when she was talking about him. His last name is Anello which is different from the baby's, so doesn't seem to be the paternal grandfather either. He looks much older than his age of 51!!! The baby's mom looks to be in her 30's. The baby's mother's middle (maiden) name is not Anello either. I was very confused after watching the NBC interview.

Color blind doesn’t mean he can’t see a physical thing. I had a teacher who was colorblind. He couldn’t see if I wrote in particular color but a physical object he was able to. It didn’t appear in the same color. Think about those who drive...

All the windows on the ship were closed except for that 1 row he was in? And why would he lean over to check and knock on it? Considering the cruise is in San Juan, Puerto Rico he should've definitely felt the breeze and heard noise coming out of that spot. Even if the window was closed the girl could've banged her head on the window, on the railing, or on the floor. Just a completely irresponsible and negligent move.

I WAS THERE at the medical right when the accident happened (and I had to stay for one hour) and I heard you saying "I just wanted her to see the plane, I put her outside it was just a second, oh my God" he was completely shocked. I'm so so sorry about this terrible lost. But after that incident I had nightmares and I could heard his voice, I will never forget everything that happened that horrible day. Unfortunately he was the irresponsible, for sure he didn't meant to, but he took an awful desition... Now he lies about it.

being on camera can be tough & around people in general to show emotion sometimes can be awkward for some..when my cousin died & I went to his funeral I couldn't cry because of everyone around..it wasn't until I was alone could I actually cry..I've got really bad social anxiety ..especially when this happened I was only 20...I'm better with it now but I still have trouble showing emotions in front of strangers its just awkward for me

Honestly on a cruise where kids are present and alcohol served to adults that railing wasn't exactly adequate safety measures in my opinion. It seemed very unsafe for children. I can't say there wasn't some negligence on his part. I just don't think all the people in the comments have to beat a man that's already down. Not you specifically, just in general.

@75joev I never said there should be windows lol. I said adequate safety. I felt the railing was entirely too open. The spaces allow for a small child to slip through in my opinion. And people do quite stupid things all the time. It is just to their great fortune no one they love or know dies in the process. I will never understand the need of people to point out the absolute painfully obvious in these situations. As if these poor individuals do not by now realize their very poor judgement. As he sits in a suit staring at a camera and interviewer reliving the death of his granddaughter by his very hand.

This is a very tragic incident. The child didn't merely walk, run, or playfully crawl to an open window within her reach. She was lifted beyond a child's reach and placed there by her grandfather. The window, whether opened or closed, was beyond the reach of the child.

He might be out of tears. I’m sure he told this exact story a 100X already. Let’s give him the benefit of the doubt because his friends & family said he was a loving grandfather that made a terrible decision.

I’m color blind too and I can attest that you can still see shade differentiation for two different colors of something. I couldn’t tell you want the colors are, but I can see a difference in the shading. Like, if you put a blue m&m in front of me and a red m&m in front of me, I couldn’t tell you which is blue and which is red, but I know they’re two different shades because light reflects off them differently creating a different shading tone for each. F*ck this guy.” Also, I hate the defense that there should have been warning signs, it’s the cruise line’s fault and they need to fix it. Do all cliffs and bridges need warning signs too? If someone jumps off a bridge and dies, can the family sue the city/town because there wasn’t a warning sign stating that could be the outcome then. What happened to common sense and taking accountability for your own actions? It shouldn’t be on the cruise ship to think of ever possible action a passenger might make and make warning signs telling them not to do it when it could result in injury or death. People should have to think for themselves about the risks that could be involved and act accordingly.

jumperchu yea but with that Attidude no safety measures would be taken by any company. Like where do you draw the line between what some people perceive as “common sense” and uninformed. Which is why coffee cups say “caution contents are hot”. Yea someone would say he shouldn’t have done it, but you would assume their would be safety to prevent that from even being a possibility. There was glass on all the other windows for some reason.

I think the grandpa knew that window was open because he skipped all other closed window to pick that one. He probably tried to look out window and he grabbed her but lost his grip on her because kids are squirmy so he dropped her. Then tried to blame the cruise. It’s disgusting how he won’t accept his negligence

All those excuses.. Color blind, child wanted to bang on the window, if there was a sign (!) and now the leaked cctv surveillance camera shows how granddad leans out of the window, looking side to side then leaning his whole upper body out over the railing, and after that picking the poor child up, dangling her out over the railing and, even holding her only in one arm. He must have lost his mind, be under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Granddad and the Childs parents should all be charged, to see what this is all really about. Money? Justice for Chloe!

How many children have ever fallen out of a cruise ship window? We can't idiot proof the world and put open window signs on every open window. The railing is there for a reason to prevent injurious falls. Putting a child to stand on the railing, (as he mentioned) is being irresponsible therefore he is at fault, not Royal Caribbean. If there was no railing, then i would have to agree the cruise line is at fault. But that is not the case.

After watching this video and other news stories on this case: He was very reckless and needs to take full responsibility and accept the consequences of his action. It's not the fault of cruise ship and the fact they are trying to get money from the cruise ship for their own fault says a lot. It is tragic what has happened.

Men in my family are color blind. There are different types and variations and you have no clue as to what he saw or how he saw it. Light reflects differently when you don't have the full spectrum of color, so what may have been light glinting off the ocean water between the ship and dock could have been perceived by this man as light bouncing off glass. That may have been why he thought glass was there. Just remember: a little girl is gone, and her Grandpa is obviously dying inside from what happened. Can we show a little compassion?

He clearly was dangling her out of an open window because he thought she'd enjoy it and his hand slipped. It was an accident, but one that never would have happened if he hadn't intentionally put her in danger.
