How can they verify they don’t have a home? You can verify they don’t have a car seat. Like be for real. They will only take your child at birth if you give it up for adoption or if your child has tested positive for drugs. It’s a sad case but those children had not business having a child.

Too many people are outraged by the wrong thing: the fact the hospital let homeless parents take a newborn. They didn’t kill the baby because they’re homeless. They killed the baby because they’re nuts, and the grandfather specifically warned the hospital about them. Being homeless shouldn’t mean your children are taken away. Being dangerous should mean you get your children taken away.

Hospitals can't keep people. Despite their condition, without a court order, they can sign themselves out. Also, unfortunately, hospitals can't provide for people if they are destitute. They have a job to do healing and "fixing" us, and when they have adequately done that job, they have to set you free. Hospital beds are often times in very high demand. We live in a sick, messed up world. In this country, there has been an effort to destroy the family. A family used to be a safety net. People don't even know how to love and care for anyone anymore. Those who wish to destroy us have done a remarkably good job. I could go on and on, but just look around you at all the horrible things that happen. Love and care begins with a commitment from each and every one of us to care for those placed in our circle.

As a nurse who works on a similar unit…. But in a different state. Please do NOT assume the staff did nothing or did not report their concerns. I can tell you we FREQUENTLY report concerns to the state child protection services- sometimes they never show up to investigate or often we see them come in, interview and then write up “a plan”- allowing the baby to be dismissed with parents, usually with a plan of CPS to follow up with them after dismissal. Sometimes the interview is in person. Sometimes by telephone. We do not legally have the right to keep a baby after that. It would be ILLEGAL for us to arbitrarily decide what babies can go home and what babies cannot. I promise you, nobody wants hospital staff deciding who gets to keep their babies and who does not. We have to have EVIDENCE that they are unfit (and No- being homeless does not exclude you from being a parent). I can only imagine the out cry if we were allowed to keep every baby for the concerns we have- because then there would be calls from the public for accountability when taking a baby without any evidence of a parent being unfit - other than a family member’s word. Then there would be finger pointing and accusations of discrimination (“it’s not their fault” they are poor, homeless, immature, poorly prepared, have depression, anxiety, bipolar….) that would occur - if babies were kept from their parents. We typically only have 24- MAX 48 hours with any normal delivery to make the determination of who is fit or unfit- sadly our system is overwhelmed. It breaks my heart.

Each state has subsequently emptied-out all mental hospitals, one reason for overwhelming homelessness. This “experiment” has put countless lives at risk, including this infant. If he was that concerned his own child wouldn’t be on the street or he could have taken the baby himself. A hospital is a medical facility, not temporary housing.

@stefanossmitty3318 you are right they aren't a shelter, but it's their job to report these issues to the welfare department. This baby could have been placed in a foster home until the parents were able to take care of her, if ever. Can't blame the grandfather, he may not have been able to take care of a newborn himself. I as a great grandmother would not be able to take in a newborn, I have to many health issues... maybe this grandfather also had health issues. @@kimpayton727 I did think. Neither one of us knows grandpa’s condition. He could be as healthy as a horse. What issue are they supposed to report? That a grandfather is concerned about harm that hasn’t happened? It’s hard enough for CPS to intervene when there’s documented evidence, let alone for something that could happen in the future, which could literally be every child. I’m sure the hospital has attorneys, social workers, and other professionals to deal with these situations and give sound advice. I see many comments on here of people defending the hospital. As an RN I can say without a doubt that the hospital should be investigating and held accountable also. Knowing this baby did not have the proper housing and the parents were homeless is the first issue. The second is the fact that the grandfather communicated his concerns. Not sure where this was. I work in a large level 1 trauma center and we have had many situations where social workers are pulled into circumstances like this. Everything possible is done. Even if it’s placement in a temporary shelter. CPS should’ve been notified as well. Emergency cases can be put in front of a judge to determine the best course of action. The list goes on. They are partially responsible here…

He should have gone to court before the baby was born to petition for custody.

I read an article where they explained the newborns baby's injuries, when she got the hospital, doctors and nurses found; burns, cuts, bruises and symptoms of shaken baby syndrome... all in a few short days she lived 😣😤

That hospital just simply DID NOT CARE ABOUT THAT PARTICULAR BABY.😡 This is absolutely unconscionable, despicable, and disgusting.💯

Is that what you get out of this? You're going to pull the r@ce card? What is the hospital supposed to do when 70% of those "particular" babies are born out of wedlock to poor people!? The hospital sees this every day. This is a cultural problem, not a r@ce problem. Tell that "particular" culture to stop constantly having premarital sex and get married!

Why didn't the 'grandfather' file for custody due to those reasons he stated?

Maybe he is unable to care for a newborn because of health issues. I know as a great grandmother at only 66 years old I would not be able to take care of a newborn. I have several different health problems and would not be able to care for a baby. He did tell the hospital tho and that should of been enough for them to report it to the state, that's why we have foster care.

Custody hearings do not happen in a week...they didn't give that baby a chance....grandparents can raise concerns but unless cps investigates and determines baby needs to be removed no one but the parents have rights to that child. That's how law and order works....those parents were just sick in the head...9 days is all it took for them to fail

That poor innocent baby and poor Grandpa, he tried to raise every alarm at the hospital. The hospital should have involved social workers and CPS.

I hope there's no bail in this case and that they sit in those jail cells until trial, and for at least 20 years so the woman will be too old to make more babies.

This is horrific and the hospital absolutely needs to be held accountable! There's no way they ever should have let that baby leave!
