Simply, his footwork, position, technique, reaction, energy or should I say just Wing Chun are so incredibly good, you cannot get close to overpower him. Hehas already read the move, is somewhere else, in a position where your angle of attack is weak, and his is devestatingly strong. First time I went I asked the same question as you and he demonstated the answer on me, I got cracked in the face, you could tell he held back but Ive never been hit so hard. This is when he was 80! A living legend!

Ip Chun is a legend. His movements have a snap to them. They are crisp and direct.

Look at the way he's preserving his (ip Chun) energy and how he's almost still at some points where's he's simply gauging his opponents strength and sensitivity. It's not always attack attack, heirs like he's getting to know you before he strikes. Great to see a master at work

YVCIIVII Nah it's called chi sao and it tests your reflexes. It's a sensitivity training and he's doing exactly what he should be doing.

@@geebeedee9509 LMFAO , go to school before you start spouting bollocks on the comment section. This guys been doing wing chun for about 75+ years , his father was yip man, learnt from the best

I don't have any. When we were at the VTAA, anyone who had the rare opportunity to chi sao with him naturally didnt steam in, as there's so much to learn from the finer subtleties to his chi sao. We did ask him what happened when somebody inevitably did. Roughly translated he said "first time they try, I hit them hard to the face, if they try again I hit them harder, they don't try the 3rd time" From experience you can't overpower him because when you try he's already hitting you in the face

Chi sao is seperate to the forms. It is where you use techniques you have learnt and you stick to each others hands, it's designed to improve your sinsetivity as your better feeling the oppenents movement rather than seeing it. To me that proves that Wing chun is effective against a bigger and stronger opponent.

..it also has a lot to do with the attacking centreline, angles, body position, and structure as well as obviously having incredible reactions/speed and skill. It's kind of hard to explain unless you have played a lot of chi sao, and have also felt what it is like when you play with people of this level. You genuinly would not want to over commit and power through as you immediately feel like your position would be compromised and you would inevitably be hit time and time again.

Just because a chisao is slow doesnt mean its of lousy quality. A lot transcends beyond the hand movements, there is still structure and other body movements involving the use of 'kwa'. I believe sigung ip chun is not jus using his hands to handle this opponent. do correct me if im wrong. cheers.

In a way yes. This video was a demonstration as Matt was giving a lot of the students in HK problems due to the fact they couldnt hit/move him due partly o his size and also Matt's very high skill level. Sigung (Ip Chun) was saying that he was at a big disadvantage due to Matt being taller, strogner and having a longer reach. Therefore Sigung stayed out of his punching range and waiting for the perfect moment to strike. That being said, there is more going on than just working range...

I did notice that Sigung was holding a breath of air in his mouth as well. I've seen many high-level masters do this to not give away anything.

Not at all. If anything being bigger will always give you an advantage. Longer reach for etc. In this demonstration SiGung (Ip Chun) was saying that SIfu Matt was at an advantage due to his size. Saying when someone is smaller he must be wary of range and be able to use it effectively to reduce the advantage of the bigger opponent. The prelude to this demonstration was Sifu Matt being impossible to hit by many of the students at the VTAA partly due to his size, but also his excellent skill level

i see, i notice that he's usually pretty far away from his opponent when he does chi sao like in this video as well as some others, he's too far out to just reach out and hit the other guy, but when he actually does go in to hit he moves in and hits. is that part of his strategy for not getting overpowered? i always thought that if your opponent was taller that you should stay in close because of the range, but he seems to be doing a bit of the opposite, and still gets in without getting hit.

Do you guys have any videos of ip chun doing chi sao against someone who just tries to overpower him? i have no doubt he can beat them, but i wanna see how its done

I think if the clock was wound back a few decades, this match would seem a lil bit better. Given the guy's hand is as long as Ip's freakin forearm is kind of a disadvantage I'd think, but still...amazing to see a 86 year old move that fast.

At 0:19 you can clearly see that this is not serious...Matt Isaac simply stops his own hand and waits for Ip Chun to catch it. There are more of the same in this video, but I am not bothering listing each time. Says something.

God the comments for videos like these are always so painful to watch. This wasnt meant to fucking show who can beat the crap out of the other person. Jesus. Its to showcase the system the man has spent his whole life teaching. People have no sense of respect these days. Fucking christ.

Matt Isaac has twice the reach of Ip Chun and Ip Chun is in his 80s or 90s - slightly unfair. However, I'm glad Matt showed respect and wasn't overly aggressive.
