An inventor and innovator who layed the groundwork for ALL MC's to come after him (actually the very first Hip-Hop poet/philosopher on the mic to bring rhymes with socially/politically concious lyrical content instead of party rhymes). This interview starts in German, in English at 00:17
Grandmaster Melle Mel
Real Name: Melvin Glover
Profile:
American rapper and Hip Hop musician, born 15 May 1961 in Bronx, New York.
Melvin Glover was the first rapper to call himself an MC. He was the de facto lead rapper and songwriter of the legendary Grandmaster Flash & The Furious 5. "The Message", Glover's biggest hit, went platinum in less than a month and would later be the first hip-hop record ever to be added to the United States National Archive of Historic Recordings and the first Hip Hop record inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame. On March 12, 2007, Melle Mel and The Furious Five (joined by DJ Grandmaster Flash) became the first rap group ever inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. (source:discogs)

A fight for power, a nuclear shower A people shout out in the darkest hour Sights unseen and voices unheard And finally the bomb gets the last word --Melle Mel

The problem is that young people can't compare because they don't know the older stuff... There's older music that's bad, but there's also music from the past that's good... I recommended a song from the 80s to an 18 year old guy and he laughed at me "I don't listen to that old crap" was his response... about a year later that exact song was used in a current film, suddenly everyone thought that song was great, including this guy...peace

By 1988, Grandmaster Melle Mel was already a well-established Emcee who proved his meddle during live shows and on records. For him to already be at least 10 years deep in the culture by 1988, there wasn't much that anyone could tell him about being an Emcee. He earned the right to be confident, cocky, and arrogant.

It's ironic he's saying 1988 rappers are new school...As it turned out, 1988 was the Golden Era of Hip-Hop....1988 is now the absolute peak of Old-School.
@alianshampoprisioners7056
@alianshampoprisioners7056 3 года назад
... For me the old school is in the middle os 70,s I born in 71 and I feel two different mentality in hiphop... The original before crack of 84 and after of this cabalistic year... The mentality of the street and the tapes whiout marketing audiovisual and the mentality is pure comercial bisnis make the urban culture a product and a reference in the world, the biginin is more rebels more authentic the second is just a product for young people... Mellemel in Beatstreet make history but Mellemel have more that you can see because in that time nobody have a camera.

Old School is anything before 1986. Anything after is considered new school. Rakim is the first modern rapper. He came out in July 1986.
@nalahschamber3469
@nalahschamber3469 3 года назад
@@noediaz143two I hear what you're saying...But Old-school will always be a matter of opinion...In the 1970's Hip-Hop was being developed and it was still considered a form of "Disco" music and put in the Disco section of record stores untill around 1983 ...in 1988 there was an explosion and Hip-Hop started producing massive amounts of Gold Albums as it's own music genre..So I consider it the Golden-Era becuz of that and a million other reasons....Hip-Hop didn't truly go mainstream pop untill 1990 with MC Hammer & Vanilla Ice having Hip-Hop's 1st global 1 songs on the charts...So to me anything 70's and 80's is old school...You can get technical and break it down further, but I basically mean in a "general" sense.
