As I make Grandmothers Pear Preserves, I remember my childhood with my grandparents. This is one of many things learned and I'm so blessed to be able to continue the tradition. Here on our urban homestead we'll take you through the entire process from slicing to canning and everything in between. If this is your first time visiting Prewitt Homestead, we'd love it if you could jump over to facebook (see the link below) as we will be answering questions and sharing new updates Live on Sunday evenings!

One thing I distinctly remember about pears is that they dull your knife faster than you can sharpen it. Labor of love

Oh my goodness, this looks exactly like the pear preserves my grandma Allan used to make in Alabama. I have searched far and wide to try to find a recipe that's even close to what she did and I believe I found it! Thank you brother for this blessed recipe! It's beautiful and I can't wait to try it. Unfortunately my grandma didn't leave any of her recipes at least not that I know of anyway. But thank you so much for sharing this, it takes me back to a memory that was very cherished, homemade pear preserves and homemade biscuits with butter. Now that's a treasure! 🙏❤️

It’s a Kiefer canning pear. I can them in slices for pies in sugar syrup. I also sugar cores and peelings and cook them down and strain it and have pear syrup. My husband ‘s mother made only pear preserves!!!

Someone is right & someone is wrong...either these are a kieffer or a bartlet...can't be both. I planted 2 pear trees in my backyard about 20 years ago...one was always loaded with fruit...soft and easy to eat right from the tree. I gave my lawn guy a bucket full, he immediately ate it and said that was the best pear he had ever eaten. I think it was a Kieffer pear but not 100%. The other tree never produced (Bartlett) only a few hard pears. Now, after Hurricane Michael (October 2018) the good producer died never came back, However, the other tree is now loaded with an incredible amount of pears...amazingly I'm inspired to can some pears. Instead of giving pears away...it will be preserves. Thanks for showing me how to do this. I never knew. P.S. I'm not sure the names as the i.d. tags faded years ago. Next time I'll label them on something more permanent.

Your video is like a movie! Love it. Thank you for sharing. I plan to do some pear preserves next week. I live in Canada and my pear tree over produced this year. They were green like yours but now getting bigger and ripe.

I like your Dirtrooster hat. He’s quite a guy. My office friend was dating a country loving guy for a while, and even though the relationship didn’t eventually solidify, the lifestyle change she met did, in that to complement his hunting gifts she became a diehard State Fair food entrant. She preserved the rock hard pears of her neighbor, who used to call her up when the fallen pears started interfering with his lawn care. She scouted out unknown persimmon and plum trees in her suburban quarter to be transformed in mason jars. She eventually inherited all the family recipes which had been lurking with her mother until someone showed interest. Anyway, your grandmother’s pear preserves reminded me, for which I thank you. Maybe there’s something intrinsic about pears that develop family values. It was a good video. Maybe try some grated ginger root and a little cinnamon in there. I have it on good authority that that kind of addition makes preserves stand out on the bench. Although the sheer fact of existing at all should make any preserve memorable anymore.

I have a Bartlett pear tree at home. The pears are very similar to those...after harvesting them they seem to need like a week in the fridge and when taken out of it they start ripening.

You just brought back so many memories for me!! My Mamaw made this every year. She had a giant pear tree in the field next to her house. I couldn’t wait every year for her to start making all the delicious things with those pears. Preserves and Pear Honey. It was all so delicious. I love a hard pear. I would eat so many that I would get sick. 😂 Thank you so much for this video. I was just a child again.

Funny story, I had a beautiful chicken I named Sassy. "She" was beautiful. I was so excited for 'her" to start laying eggs. One day I noticed "she" was crowing 🐓. As Sassy got to be more adult looking I had to change the name. Sassy became a Sasquatch. He was mean and rude to all my ladies. He ended up in a stew pot due to his poor personality. He had no manners what so ever with the ladies. The other roosters would run him all over the place but he always managed to hurt my ladies. I had one lady I named Ebony who was an amazing momma and layer. Sasquatch would start after her and Ebony would run and fly onto my shoulder so he couldn't harm her. We get to name our chickens what we like. No shame in your game. If she is laying then Albert it is. 🐔🐓

I have enough pears for maybe 6 half pint jars that my grandson and his friend peeled and cut for me They are not cut consistently Quiet alot of them are chipped in little peices I have had the sugar and pears sitting on the counter overnight My question is when I cook them are the small bits going to turn to mush or will the finished product still be preserves? Love the way you taught how to make this receipe
@One29Homestead
@One29Homestead 2 года назад
Sorry for the late response Susan. If you are not using a firm pear, or they have gotten a little soft they will turn to mush. I like to pick them when they are still nice and firm. It has to do with the variety also. Hope your preserves turned out amazing.

@@One29Homestead Thank you for replying I'm sorry to say that they didn't turn out I cooked them for 2 hours and the finished product was to hard to eat The best I can describe it is the juice turned out like the consistency of peanut brittle brittle, but harder They had started going soft and I think I should of cut the cooking time in half . The flavor was amazing though If I can ever afford to buy anymore I will try again
