Grandpa Hedgehog and The Big Black Bag, written by Irwin Stone, Illustrated by Stella Carter.
This is a wonderful and educational story about throwing rubbish into the forest and surrounding areas. Do you ever think about the effect this can have on our wildlife?
"Do you ever go to your friends or neighbour's house and leave a rubbish bag in the middle of their living room? This is precisely what humans are doing to us. The forest is our living room, our home."

Questions you may wish to ask your child to increase their understanding of the story:
1. What was whirring through the jungle? (a big posh car)
2. What was thrown out of the car? (a big black bag)
3. What do you think was inside the big black bag? (rubbish/garbage)
4. Where did the big black bag land? (on the back of an old hedgehog)
5. Who saw the hedgehog first? (the wise owl)
6. Which other animals saw Grandpa Hedgehog? (a crocodile and a snake)
7. The other creatures said that hedgehog is 'Nocturnal", what does this mean? (it is when certain animals sleep all day and only come out at night)
8. Can you name any other animals that are nocturnal? (owls, foxes and bats are a few)
9. What did the deer have stuck on his antlers? (underpants)
10. What did the bear call the underpants? (a stylish hat)
11. Who did the owl ask to help rescue Grandpa Hedgehog? (Deer and Crocodile)
12. How was Grandpa rescued? (by grasping the pants, and the croc holding onto to the black bag)
13. What did the deer do then? (he pulled and pulled)
14. What happened to Grandpa next? ( he flew through the air)
15. Who did Grandpa Hedgehog see while he was flying? ( two black crows)
16. Can hedgehogs fly? (no they can't)
17. Where did Grandpa Hedgehog land? (in the pond)
18. Why were the animals worried about Grandpa? (because he can not swim and he sunk in the water)
19. What did Grandpa Hedgehog land on that saved him in the water? (a red ball)
20. Was Grandpa safe in the end? (yes as he was on dry land but no as he now had a ball stuck on his spikes that he could not get off)
21. How do you feel about this story and the way the animals are effected by the rubbish people leave in the forest and places that animals live? ( answers will vary, but take this opportunity to talk to your child about this and about littering, we can only save our planet by educating the next generation).
