As the tallest mountain in the state of Montana, Granite Peak rises to 12,808 feet above sea level. This peak is classified as the 2nd most difficult state highpoint in the lower 48 states.
Starting from Mystic Lake trail head, we heading west toward Mystic Lake. After 3 miles of a steady climb, we reached the lake. 0.5 miles along the southern shore of Mystic lake, we turned south onto Phantom Creek trail, heading up The Switchbacks from Hell. After 29 switchbacks, and 2,500 feet of elevation gain over 2 miles, we finally reached Froze-To-Death Plateau. Once on the Plateau, we hiked to the base of Froze To Death Peak, and set up our camp for the night.
On day two, we woke up at 4am, ate breakfast, and began our hike across the Plateau by 5am. After a relatively smooth 4 mile hike across the plateau, we finally reached the edge of the Bivouac saddle connecting Tempest Peak and Granite Peak. We descended into the saddle, and lost 500 feet in elevation gain. Then began the final ascent to the summit. We gained 1,200 feet in elevation gain from the base of the saddle, to the summit. We crossed two snow bridges on the was to the top. After the final snow bride, the last 200 feet were the most technically. The summit was stunning!
Thank you for watching, and please feel free to comment any questions you may have regarding this incredible hike.
Keep hiking! 🏔️

Great video and congrats on the summit. I’ve climbed Granite 3 times and planning to do it again. The Beartooths are pretty amazing.

Outstanding video! It's my plan to give it a shot this summer. At 60, I'm not sure how many years I will have the ability to make these treks, but love it so much!!!

I attempted this in one day a few weeks ago left at 230 am in the morning from the trail head made it to granite about 830 am to see a line of people kicking rocks down. Waited at the saddle till 10 hoping they would be down but people still at the top i was worried about afternoon thunderstorms ran out of time. Did tempest and froze to death mountain instead. Really disappointed next time ill leave sooner and be the first one up. Only slept a hour the night before the attempt due to life flights going back and fourth doing rescues someone got gored by mountain goat.

Very nice on attempting a one day climb! Yeah, thankfully we were the first ones up that morning, so we didn’t have to worry about people ahead of us. Hopefully you can get up there soon! Happy trails!

Did you have to rent the campsite ahead of time or was it first come first serve?
@davidstevenson3657
@davidstevenson3657 2 месяца назад
It’s first come, first serve! There are 4-5 good spots around where we stayed. There are plenty of camp spots across the plateau before you descend into the saddle. Stay safe up there!

Great video! I’m looking at doing this trip in September this year and came on your video while doing some research. Definitely looks like quite the climb going up, but doable. Do you have any tips on safely descending from the summit in that terrain with normal hiking equipment?

So my buddy and I are trying to do this late July this year(2024) and everything online says you need climbing gear for the decent. Do you really need all that?
@davidstevenson3657
@davidstevenson3657 3 месяца назад
That’s awesome! Hope you guys enjoy! There was only one ledge on the decent where I wanted some climbing gear. But even that wasn’t too bad. If you guys have good climbing sense, and are moderately in shape, you should be fine! Stay safe up there!

I'm going here, in early September would you recommend an ice axe and crampons?
@davidstevenson3657
@davidstevenson3657 Год назад
Hey Michael! We only had to cross two small snow bridges on the ascent, but I’m almost positive they’ll be gone by early September, so I personally wouldn’t bother carrying the extra weight. Safe hiking, and good luck!

Hi David, congratulations. Were there any class 5 moves on the route you climbed? I couldn't tell.
@davidstevenson3657
@davidstevenson3657 Год назад
Thank you! Yes, after we crossed the snow bridge, the last 200 feet of the climb is mostly class 3-4 and two moves that I would classify as class 5.
