As the tallest mountain in the state of Montana, Granite Peak rises to 12,808 feet above sea level. This peak is classified as the 2nd most difficult state highpoint in the lower 48 states.
Starting from Mystic Lake trail head, we heading west toward Mystic Lake. After 3 miles of a steady climb, we reached the lake. 0.5 miles along the southern shore of Mystic lake, we turned south onto Phantom Creek trail, heading up The Switchbacks from Hell. After 29 switchbacks, and 2,500 feet of elevation gain over 2 miles, we finally reached Froze-To-Death Plateau. Once on the Plateau, we hiked to the base of Froze To Death Peak, and set up our camp for the night.
On day two, we woke up at 4am, ate breakfast, and began our hike across the Plateau by 5am. After a relatively smooth 4 mile hike across the plateau, we finally reached the edge of the Bivouac saddle connecting Tempest Peak and Granite Peak. We descended into the saddle, and lost 500 feet in elevation gain. Then began the final ascent to the summit. We gained 1,200 feet in elevation gain from the base of the saddle, to the summit. We crossed two snow bridges on the was to the top. After the final snow bride, the last 200 feet were the most technically. The summit was stunning!
