Chemical info: what is really dangerous is not the chlorine itself which is just Cl the element on the periodic table, it’s the fact that when not contained it transforms in gas and became extremely dangerous because breathed. Chlorine gas it’s heavy and tends to progressively deposit on ground level and remain lower instead of spreading high in the air, that’s the reason why the gas form is so dangerous for the people that breath the gas, it cause irritation and losing consciousness and remaining on the ground, due to breathing problems and the exposure is maximized. Chlorine gas is a blistering agent’s that bond with the wardrobe and penetrate the skin creating blisters in the mucous membranes like eyes, nose, tracheas and lungs. There’s no effective cure for Chlorine Gas exposure, the only thing doable is to avoid infection on the blisters, and try to reduce the absorption of the substance, by applying Vaseline on the skin exposed. Chlorine gas it’s also a carcinogenic and mutagenic agent, so the aftermaths effects are permanent and different in every subject (it’s also depends on the level of exposure time and quantity).

Can those chemicals explode?
@EM.1
@EM.1 4 года назад
@Josiah Ondo Hasian Lihardo Martua Marpaung if Chlorine’s gasses are mixed with another element, it’s possible to start a chemical reaction, fast oxidation, that increases the temperatures till an explosion. Chemically speaking explosions can be caused by: -chemical reaction like oxidation, or every process that have an exothermic reaction. -pressure changes -friction of particles that creates a spark and due to the excessive concentration of particles the spark start an explosion as chain reaction. Very common in case of sugar, tobacco, coffee, flour processing. -temperature changes: TNT is stable till a certain temperature, below this temperature it became unstable and can explode without any detonator device, just by itself, especially when the temperature is modified suddenly from below the stability point to increasing the temperature. -impacting on something in chemistry it’s defined “inappropriate handling” basically when the chemical compounds are moved and are subjected to a blunt force trauma. -self oxidation by aging, the compounds can start an exothermic reaction or an oxidation reaction because the compounds degrade itself after a certain time.
@EM.1
@EM.1 4 года назад
more informations: Cl transformation in Chlorine gas is itself an oxidation reaction, operated by Oxygen. Chlorine gas is highly stable because it has been developed as blistering agents, to be used as chemical weapon in war first time in 1915 in Netherlands, Chlorine gas is also known as Yperite. So no, Chlorine gas can’t explode. Another chemical compounds stored in the tank cars was Sodium Hydroxide aka caustic soda or Lye, it is a highly caustic base and alkali that decomposes proteins at ordinary ambient temperatures and may cause severe chemical burns blisters as well, by decomposing the proteins present on the skin, and even deeper in the tissues in case of high exposure. Sodium Hydroxide is highly soluble in water, and readily absorbs moisture and carbon dioxide CO2 from the air. It forms a series of hydrates NaOH·nH 2O. The monohydrate NaOH·H 2O crystallizes from water solutions between 12.3 and 61.8 °C. It’s natural form is crystallized, Sodium Hydroxide appears as white salt. It’s possible to see the compounds on the aerial photos of the accident site spread all over the place, when the tank cars ruptured.

From what I know from a former NS dispatcher, apparently the line spanning from Aiken to Graniteville was sold off to the Graniteville Railroad, which would form a subsidiary call the Aiken Railroad. They still run today, albeit to the only local industrial area which a old fibreglass plant not far from the railroad.

This is copy and pasted from the bathroom reader Mississauga,Ontario. Trapped! Minutes before midnight on November 10,1979, an axle on a 106-car freight train in Mississauga, just outside Toronto, broke, derailing 23 cars. Their cargo: explosive and toxic chemicals. The derailment immediately caused several propane tanker cars to explode and spilled the contents of several more----caustic soda, styrene, and toluene----onto theoperationThe fire from the propane tanks ignited vapors from the chemicals, causing w massive explosion with a fireball nearly 5,000 feet high. (People 50 miles away saw it.) Among the derailed cars, officials found a tanker carrying 81 tons of chlorine. And it was leaking. If it blew up, it could create a cloud of chlorine gas that could wipe out the entire city. Evacuate! The entire city----including six nursing homes and three large hospitals----would have to be evacuated. Thousands of police, firefighters, emergency medical technicians, doctors, nurses, bus drivers, and other volunteers worked around the clock driving people to makeshift evacuation centers outside of town. When it was over, more than 218,000 people were moved in less than 48 hours, not a single life was lost. Until the much less successful post-Hurricane Katrina operation, it was the largest peacetime evacuation in North American history. (It took five days to get the site under control and, thankfully, the chlorine tank never blew.)

The only thing I would like for you to edit on this is that the valley never forgot that region where the accident happened in is known as Midland Valley encompasses about six towns of what's Graniteville is becoming the largest. Almost everyone in the valley in some shape or form was affected. There's a church about a quarter mile from where the accident happened. Three to four years ago they finally replaced the corroded cross that's was on its steeple. To that degree was a symbolic gesture that we were moving on and had moved on.

Well it's not really NS's fault. The moron brakeman that forgot to do the very simple task of realigning the switch led to the disaster. I've seen brakemen open switches and close them for siding moves and trust me it's not hard, just get the keys to unlock the locks holding it, move the lever to whatever direction is needed and then lock it back up when you're done. Brakemen are supposed to confirm to the dispatcher about the switch being reset (I don't know if that was done here but I think the brakeman said he did but in reality didn't)

The engineer of NS 192, Chris Seeling, died from chlorine poisoning. The conductor, William Wright, is still alive today, but still has trouble with his lungs. While it was a tragedy, Chris Seeling actually died doing what he loved. Being an engineer was something he had dreamed of doing since he was a kid. He was a dedicated young man. Even if he was off work, he kept his cell phone on him hoping NS would give him a call soon enough. May he and the other victims rest in God's Hands.

The one with the woman choking is the one that still sticks with me after editing. Really eerie.

@@Thunderbolt_1000_Siren I didn't find it that scary, just chilling. But I found the numerous reports to worse, imagine if you were the in the dispatcher's place and people kept calling you, it means to *SENDHELP* !

That's another thing I'm doing with these videos. Not just tackling well known wrecks like Hinton, Chase, Weyauwega, etc. I also touch on lesser known wrecks like this one, Sandersville, and eventually Secaucus JCT too. I especially want to do more local wrecks in my area too like a collision that happened on the Warminster line. Plus like the crazy 8s one it doesn't always have to be a crash I cover.

For some future suggestions could you do the 2013 Santiago de Compostela Derailment, the 2015 CSX M.T. Carbon Derailment or the 1998 Eschede Derailment?
