The sheath I just received with my axe - January 2022- is perfectly good. The leather is full grain thick and stiff and it’s constructed well. The edge does not come in contact with the rivets and it fits so that the axe will not cut into the leather. A great sheath and a nice little axe that came razor sharp.

This little ax is the most valuable blade in my pack when I go hunting. I use it to limb trees when I’m climbing, cut open packages, and other camp chores. It’s outstanding for fleshing a hide in the field too.

I have about 8 Gransfors Bruks axes/hatchet. I want the 513 but not for use chopping, I personally feel it is designed for small wood work, but mainly I am purchasing for food. Used aa wildlife hatchet, but need the palm swell and shorter handle, but this and a dutch oven make a good combination. Much better leverage than a knife.

I have their Scandi forest axe and it has served me very well for over a decade. It's more than paid for itself, if you deal with wood at all. My lady has wanted an axe and gets more comfortable the more she can control the swing or choke up. I think the next step up in length is better over all for the extra leverage and reach. As for the sheath, your dad's looks amazing, but something to note: the rivets on the stock one, no matter the quality, are brass which is softer than carbon steel and meant to be so. If you manage to bump/cut into the rivets it won't do devastating damage to the blade. Stainless steel will put up more of a fight on the edge and increase your risk of chipping. I will agree that for the premium the cover ought to be a bit more up to snuff. I don't mind the tip out method, it keeps it from falling off if the snap catches, which has happened to me. Nearly lost my cover multiple times processing cords. If he is still making custom leather, there are snaps that open one way and I can't recommend them enough, especially for bush tools.

I have a feeling that anyone serious enough to buy a Gränsfors Bruk axe of any sort would be intelligent enough to take the sheath off of the axe before swinging it.

Maybe I'm weird, but I like the gransfors sheath better. Not saying yours is bad but I like the rivets. I won't be trying to chop with my sheath on lol. Pretty good review though
@robertcesena6329

I enjoy your review. This is my opinion on the way the Gransfors sheath was produced with the feature that prevents the hatchet from coming straight out of the sheath. It adds another level of protection against loss if it's belt carried using the sheath as it has been demonstrated in other reviews. Also against accidentally dislodging the hatchet and or injury. Certainly doesn't seem as well built as your father's design though. Why didn't he use brass rivets though if you don't mind my asking. In case the hatchet should cut through the leather. The softer metal shouldn't mar the blade. Right?
@Dgozz122
@Dgozz122 4 года назад
Arent the rivets on the gransfors sheath brass? Brass is softer than that swidish steel so of it were to hit them it wouldnt ruin your blade

I got this axe as a Christmas gift, being Australian we don't need a large axe to fell trees or cut logs as 1. It's illegal to do on most camping grounds, and 2. Whats the point. But it's good for small branches, sticks, twigs, and carving which is what you want when fuel is so abundant here you literally just find it everywhere on the ground even in winter.

Zero reason to use this versus the same hatchet with a longer handle. Why? because the few inches longer one is the same price, still fits in a pack, and is the exact same weight. Yet you get a lot more cutting power. Kinda gimmicky, but it looks cool

You repeatedly mention the "wilderness" hatchet as having the same head. I think you are talking about the "wildlife hatchet". To be sure, there is a "Gransfors Bruks Ray Mears Wilderness Axe" which was a collaboration between GB and Ray Mears but it has a very different head. The one that has the same head as the hand hatchet is the "wildlife hatchet". My second comment has to do with the functionality of this hatchet. I admit, I love GB products and currently own four of their axes/hatchets. This one is tempting too. But when I try to think about it objectively, I can't help but conclude that about 90% of what this hatchet does could also be done with a sturdy knife like the Bark River Bushcrafter 2 or Bravo 1.5. The biggest difference is that the knife weighs far less and can easily be carried on the belt. As you say, this hatchet can be used for hunting purposes but a good knife will outperform it any day. It can be used for carving, but a knife will work better. It can be used for making feather sticks but the knife will once again outperform. As for splitting kindling, the hatchet will be a bit quicker than battoning with a knife, but the difference isn't too significant. This hatchet can probably split slightly bigger pieces of wood, but that is the only thing I can think of where it is significantly better than a big, sturdy knife. So then I have to ask myself... am I just going to become a Gransfors collector, or do I buy their products to actually use them?

The metal in the back of the axe is softer do not get into the habit of pounding stakes and other things with it...It will eventually split and ruin the entire tool. The reason it is round and soft is because it is designed to be used to seperate skins of animals from the carcass. Wranglerstar is the best source on youtube where axes and axe safety is concerned.
