Grant Petersen: The Big Bang Theory…of Bicycles

I’ll talk about how wheels came to bicycles, about the early bikes, about the first boom and what caused it...about what led to the 73-year slump between 1897 and 1970, and who and what lead to the rebirth/comeback after that...
Grant Petersen is a 1954 model human and is a well-known figure in the world of bikes as an independent thinker, and a good bicycle designer, and founder of Rivendell Bicycle Works.
Grant worked for Bridgestone Cycle for ten years where he designed the XO series of bicycles. In 1994, he founded the Rivendell Bicycle Works, and has been there ever since. Grant is known to be suspect of race-born bicycle technology, and is generally opposed to complicated design and slavish prioritization of speed, light-weight and racing-led fashion - over tradition, comfort and durability. Rivendell specializes in bicycles intended for all sorts of riding outside of competition. In addition to lugged steel frames, signatures of this trend have included leather saddles, downtube or bar-end shifters in place of brifters, and the use of practical handlebars.
A reformed racer who’s commuted by bike every day since 1980, Petersen’s writings and opinions appear in major bicycling and outdoor magazines. Grant Petersen shares a lifetime of unexpected facts, controversial opinions, expert techniques, and his own maverick philosophy. He has written four books, the most recent ones being “Just Ride: A Radically Practical Guide To Riding Your Bike” and his newest book is the recently released “Eat Bacon, Don’t Jog.” Grant lives in California with his wife of 28 years, and has two daughters in college.

I appreciate Grant's overall view on cycling. I love racing bikes, touring and adventuring on bikes, commuting on bikes, and just cruising around on bikes. We run into problems when we allow racing or some other aspect of cycling to dominate the industry.

In this country we are dying from eating the wrong foods and not exercising but after a talk about bikes people want to dwell on hype and cite incidents that stoke fear. It's much more dangerous on your couch than riding your bike. I get this attitude from parents and teachers at elementary school bike rodeos as they load their kid into the car and head out to the freeway. If we want to put a mandatory helmet law to good use we should require kids to wear helmets in cars.

Grant Peterson is the man. I really like his view of the bike as a tool of adventure and not something solely for chasing speed.

Tool for adventure is probably the best description I've heard for a bicycle, at least how I use them!

I met Grant when he was with Bridgestone, and he was a really nice guy and one of the most influential people in the industry. I hope he pursues attains some success in the gravel bike niche, as he deserves it!!

I'm really surprised at how "new" the bicycle is, and that cycling is such a big part of my life when it's context in history is so limited. I am so fortunate to have found cycling! I loved my bike as a kid but lost touch with cycling after I got a learner's permit to drive a car. Then a whole cascade of events, including children, kept me off a bike for 2 decades. I consider those my "dark ages." I now schedule my life around my rides. I like the idea of keeping the bicycle simple and non-motorized. That being said, I love seeing the obvious joy on the faces of folks who would not participate in cycling at all if not for the ebike.

GP's advice on conditioning leg muscles brought this anecdote to mind: In 1960-61 my junior high got a visit from Michael DeBakey, who was then famous for his pioneering work in open heart surgery. Such surgery is taken for granted today but back then your fate was pretty much sealed if you had heart disease, until modern surgical tecniques were common.. Anyway I still remember DeBakey urging everyone in the audience (comprised of 11-13 yearr old students and their teachers) to exercise, and to concentrate particularly on the leg muscles, because those muscles assisted the heart in moving blood upward against the force of gravity. Even back then there was concern that the "younger generation" was out of shape from too many sedentary pastimes like TV. DeBakey recommended walked and also what he referred to as "fahrt-lekking", which is German or Swedish and means something like "walk then run". I guess we'd use the term "interval training", but DeBakey's term had us all cracking up.

The cultural stigma associated with bicycling in North America is, thankfully, sinking. It's crazy how North American cities in the past were willing to adapt space inefficient, polluting motor vehicles just to willfully ignore and discourage the humble bicycle as well as walking/public transit. If only engineers of the past had thought about the public safety hazard that cars are, especially compared to other modes of transportation (or, in shameful modern terms, "vulnerable users"), this absurd stigma wouldn't exist and racing/sports culture wouldn't need to pull roadkilled utility cycling out of the gutter. I also found it interesting that during the Q&A bit, much of the audience are actually older folks likely from the Boomer generation. To my surprise, despite their generation of engineers and planners designing towns around the car and not humans, many of them were very forward-thinking with their support for protected bike lanes & overall systemic bike safety and that plenty of them were cyclists & are interested in using a bike in their daily lives. It's a nice contrast to the generation after them (at least in the US), who are generally greatly vocal about being pro-car and anti-bicycle/public transit/walking. Thanks for uploading this video. Grant is a beacon of hope for the American bicycle industry, even if his daily life might only serve for a niche.

I am very glad I have acclimated to riding one myself. I save a ton of money over an automobile, and I get on my own gym every time I go somewhere. I will be converting from drop downs to upright bars myself, whereas I never use the lower level of the drop downs. Speed is also quite dangerous on a bicycle when there are side streets all the time, and racing should never be encouraged on a city bike. We are also much more alert with a better field of view when we are upright, and if we are wearing a high visibility jacket or vest, that also becomes more visible when we are erect. "Form follows function", just observe the function of everyone you see on a bicycle going by you on any given street, and you realize that a racing bike is not what their function demands, but year after year integrity, better baskets, friendly bells, brighter lights, and brighter colors, and of course, a lot of style to make the scene with.

Apart from the soapboxing of applying forensic science to make conclusions only relevant to observational science for geography and anthropology, I appreciated the wisdom of Mr. Peterson’s lecture-especially on recumbents and overemphasis on the necessity of aerodynamics.

Thanks for posting this. Nice lecture and wood tie. Surprised Grant just went along with the "ahh biking's dangerous" commentators. Sure improvements could be made. But I'm a safety sally, if biking on the urban(san francisco) city streets was all that dangerous I'd be doing something else.

Nice presentation and history with charisma. Don't agree on the recumbent synopsis in the Q & A. Recumbents come in all sizes and not all are low to the ground. I ride a High-Riser and is quite visible. The beauty of the recumbent is not in the reduced wind resistance so much as the comfort. It seems that most of the recumbent growth is with older people and this is natural as the aches and pains that comes with old age are amplified on a standard diamond frame bike, but eliminated on the recumbent. Pain in the butt, shoulders, neck, arms, wrists are gone. I'm 64 and bicycling is fun again riding my recumbent. I look forward to touring across America and Europe once I retire, where I couldn't imagine it on a traditional touring bike. I think that if people would have started as a child riding recumbents, they would think of a diamond frame bike as being ridiculous. Recumbents are faster, more comfortable, and even safer than diamond frames as your feet are in front to take the hit if you collide with something, rather than your head. I think they are the future of cycling on the road. Not so much on the trails.

E-bikes can't displace bicycles because they are bicycles. The addition of motors doesn't change them, it just expands their capabilities. E-bikes will be more accessible, so they'll be more attractive to those who are on the edge, if pedaling weren't so tiring.

Are recumbents more aerodynamic? In some ways I bet they could be better racing bikes.
@rlm4471
@rlm4471 3 месяца назад
They are more aerodynamic, but they're also more complex and usually heavier. Also, studies show that cyclists usually produce lower power in the recumbent position than in the upright position. Still, a recumbent with an aero fairing will be faster than a standard upright bike on a flat road, if power is held constant.

No tesla bike, no apple bike. No accidents in the bike lanes. Glad all those predictions were wrong.
@rlm4471
@rlm4471 3 месяца назад
If you look at the data, there are loads of e-bike crashes. According to trauma surgeons, e-bike accidents tend to look qualitatively different from bicycle accidents because e-bikes disrupt the usual correlation between speed and age/fitness. This is why many places have now created laws limiting the speed at which an e-bike can provide electrical assistance. IMHO, Grant's prediction about e-bike crashes was right on target. The only reason Apple and Tesla haven't created e-bikes is that Chinese companies beat them to the punch by flooding the market with cheap and effective e-bikes.

@gcvrsa
@gcvrsa 2 года назад
His ebike predictions haven't aged well. It's 2022, and there is still no epidemic of ebike crashes in bike lanes, and adoption of ebikes in Europe, where density is much higher, has proven that ebikes easily co-exist with conventional bicycles, because they don't go any faster than conventional bicycles. Elon Musk is still a grifter, there's no Apple ebike (and there won't be one), but ebike adoption in the US is exploding. Entry to the market is now about $1000 USD for a good quality ebike, and we are dipping into the $700 USD range for the absolute floor. The invasion of Ukraine by Russia has caused petroleum prices to skyrocket, and ebikes are currently in very high demand, even as global supply chains have been disrupted by the now 2-year-long COVID-19 pandemic.
