An interview with Wyatt Gilmore, owner of Grant Stone. I encourage you to skip around to time stamped topics noted below.
0:00 - It smells like leather
0:51 - Wyatt's favorite shoes and suggestions.
2:35 - Should all shoe bottom outsoles be leather?
4:44 - Are shoe trees worth using?
7:30 - Plain toe shoe. The most underrated shoe. I was incorrectly calling this a whole cut. It is not a true whole cut.
8:30 - Dirty Buck shoe in CF Stead tan suede. A classic, versatile suede shoe from the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s brought back by Grant Stone.
9:40 - Chromexcel polishing method using shoe cream and carnauba wax.
11:31 - Cap Toe Boot. Crimson Horween Chromexcel.
13:38 - Modern style clashing of casual with formal styles. Are there rules? (sorry, Wyatts mic cut out in this)
15:50 - Diesel Boot. Badalassi leather. Great for patina.
19:50 - Edward Boot in Honey Glazed Horween shell cordovan (aka natural shell cordovan).
24:39 - Why is Grant Stone made in China?
34:50 - What makes a great suede? Travel Penny Loafer in CF Stead Midnight Suede.
37:23 - Butyl Leather Sole from Keystone Leather in Pennsylvania.
40:30 - Grant stone lasts are wider and more broad.
43:00 - Do Americans have fat feet? Footwear brands make different lasts for different markets.
44:03 - Sizing guide. You are probably ordering shoes too narrow.
45:25 - History of Grant Stone. Alden origins.
51:17 - Grant Stone is warehoused in Michigan. Living in Michigan or living in China?
54:04 - Coronavirus. Of course we had to include this. Does it affect Grant Stone?
56:12 - Round Barn Brewery.
56:32 - Questions from RU-vid. When are you restocking shell boots?
57:07 - Questions from RU-vid. Any plans to make a dressy shell boot?
57:32 - Upcoming Grant Stone products.
59:25 - Comparing shell cordovan Fat Herbies.

I appreciate Wyatt Gilmore's honesty in this interview. The interviewer is pitching softballs to hang on to and ride a narrative... and Wyatt stays to the unvarnished truth: Look it's a business. We're doing what we can given the materials we have. He showed no BS about some company mission or some other nonsense narrative. Wyatt is no politician, he's just an honest and pragmatic business man. Refreshing.

This is such a wonderful interview. I really appreciate the conversation around dispelling negative stereo types associated with Chinese products. By clarifying that poor product quality stem from prioritizing price point at the expense of high quality raw materials we see here origin of production isnt the issue. The issue are companies who refuse to invest in their own products in order to sell something unders a certain price point to guarantee maximum profits.

Great comment here. Before this interview I spent several hours reading feedback on Grant Stone and the ONLY negative comment was "made in China". It was the most important question that I had to ask Wyatt and I think his response was perfect "you can make a bad product or you can make a good one". After wearing the Diesel boots in Chromexcel for 6 months now I can affirm that these are very well made boots. They are very comfortable, look great, and I wouldn't be surprised if they lasted me for a few re-soles. The Diesel boots have quickly become one of my top 3 pairs of boots. -Phil

@@AshlandLeather Not getting your approach here at all. You are an example of a firm building a quality product in America and supporting the American worker, and I appreciate you for that, and own your products. Why sing the praises of a company that has to go to China to do the same? The question isnt about their quality, it is about their allegiance to the American worker. The way I found Ashland was by Googling American made leather wallets when I realized that the "Italian" brand i had been buying was now made in China. Do i need to spend $300 on an Ashland wallet to get quality? NO. Does it make me feel better to know i am supporting people like Phil, Matt, and their workers? YES. What I am saying John, is that there are places like China that want to see you and your way of life beaten. Is that where you want your money to go? Or would you rather it go to your neighbors?

I love the way their boots are constructed and o never thought I would like plain toed boots but I love both my Diesel’s. My favorite is the Ottawa because it’s like the Alden Tankers. I got the Ottawa’s first, the Dune cxl Diesel’s second, and the black cxl Diesel’s with the leather sole 3rd. Jedy617 Clearly there is nothing wrong with China, and these boots are an excellent example of a high quality product. That said, I would like to keep you, me and everyone else employed in America and therefore I try to support “Made in the USA” wherever possible.

@@wt460 but if people in the US don't want to get into bootmaking/ the trades in general, then what can you do? If Alden has their boots at the same price as Grant Stone count me in (coming from the owner of a used pair of Alden shell boots).
@wt460
@wt460 4 года назад
Jedy617 Fair point, but there is no way to have an equal price as both labor and costs levied by the Government make it virtually impossible to have a similar price. That said, I own a pair of Grant Stone’s and I love them. I also own about 10 pair of Alden’s that I acquired over a 20 year period, and I find the quality to be a bit better but it was initially difficult to buy the much more expensive cost. That said, if we want to have manufacturing continue in the USA, we need to pay a little (or in this case a significant amount) more. Good thing we both have something to choose from and as I said, I really love both the GS’s and the Alden’s. If you get a pair of shell cordovan I would absolutely buy only from Alden’s, as I can attest to having a pair last for nearly forty years.

A big part of the reason why things like boot making is leaving the country is due to culture/tradition. If you're surrounded by people that are crafting things, there's a better chance that children of those artisans will do or want to do the same thing. When you start outsourcing, traditions change. A kid growing up in a military family will probably want to do something along those lines, not make shoes, for example, since they're far removed from that lifestyle. It's not necessarily that people don't want to do these things, it's because people are rarely exposed to them and many times don't even think of them as options. No passion was created for it, because that passion lies elsewhere. Something else was nurtured into people. Outsourcing and the shutting down of factories is more of the cause of lack of interest, not necessarily that lack of interest caused shutting down of factories. But that's what happens when workers here require $16+ an hour vs in China at $3 an hour. Trade skills are highly important to the economy of a country, so seeing that many trades are leaving the country is a little sad. It's part of the reason why I own many boots, all of which are made in the US. Although, with that said, I am not against buying items from other countries (all of my expensive sneakers are made elsewhere, many electronics, etc). Sometimes you can't help it, and sometimes you can't afford it. Grant Stone boots look like they are amazing quality, and may likely be the only pair of boots that I buy that aren't US-made. At least most of the parts to construct the boots are, so that's a plus.

Grant Stone makes a beautiful "American style" shoe. Taking their cue from the British; Grant Stone...does a good job. Very well made. I like them. Unfortunately...they have the reputation for being considered, "old man shoes". Fortunately, shoe companies like Grant Stone...are bringing this style back. Which is a good thing. I think the style is classic and gives the wearer a sense of "class". The old styles are coming back. That style never really left Britian. The Italian, Spanish, and Portuguese style shoes are very sleek and also nice looking. But there is something "sturdy", about an American and British style shoe. It is a shame that many men today in America just don't care. Looking and dressing like a man...seems to be outdated. With brands like Grant Stone though...maybe that will change. Men in America, do not really realize that the ladies, see what men are wearing...and they totally love the man who dresses like a man should. I hate to say it...but most men in America...are clueless. I say to American men...."Hey! The ladies do notice how you look and dress!" So...wear your tank top, loose basketball shorts, with a Nike Monarch, or flip-flops if you want...but it could be a deal breaker for a young lady you have your eye on.

what a bad question asker. What's the point of asking questions when you're not listening to the answers, ignoring the answers, interjecting your own answers. Sample excerpt "tell me your philosophy" but without waiting for an answer he goes on to explain what he thinks is the philosophy, then interrupts several times, finally summarizing without using any information that was given. I'm going to buy some Grant Stone boots now. Let me summarize, manufacturing is very good in China but if you ask them to make crap for you then they'll give you what you asked for. The manufacturing isn't the issue, it's the companies that want inexpensive low quality products. I believe this is the message but the interviewer instead promotes the opposite picture.
@AshlandLeather
@AshlandLeather 3 года назад
Fair criticism. I could definitely be an interviewer. To note here on why I asked that question: I researched a lot about Grant Stone before this interview. The only criticism that I could find was that they are made in China. I felt that it would be appropriate to ask the question in the way that general consensus online would want to ask it. I asked Wyatt about this point blank and I think he answered the question well. The shoes are well made. The quality stands on its own. I now own a couple pair of Grant Stone that I bought with my own money -- not a gift. They stand up with my favorite boots and shoes and I think that the Diesel boot is perhaps my most comfortable pair. I appreciate the feedback. I need to listen more than speak.

I think the moral question is do you want to do business, and thus give money/support, to any regime that's overtly hostile to the country you're from and is an oppressive regime with no regard for human rights. With that said I do own a few pairs of Grant Stones (price per quality is hard to deny), but this elephant in the room leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

Replace the Dainite sole from an Allen Edmonds and you can sell them for cheaper than Grant Stone. There is no magic here. Grant Stone is saving money by offering imitation components. Stick a Dainite sole on there and sell them for $360 and put your money where your mouth is.

Made in China...sorry, I cannot and will not bring myself to support "made in China" products when I could just as easily support American made products and American workers. Just my personal preference and my choice. Yes, it is personal.

@iHustleLXXXI
@iHustleLXXXI Год назад
Yes. It is personal. I was also in your shoes a year ago. My reason is very uncommon. I was born in Taiwan and I came to the USA when I was 7yo. From the age of 7 and when I knew what was going on in the world, China has been trying to take over Taiwan and kill Taiwanese people. That’s the reason why I didn’t want to support China in any way but I have realized that almost everything we own is MIC. If you carry a smartphone, it’s highly likely that you’re supporting China because they make everything. Especially if you own an iPhone. China makes everything and I try not to buy MIC things but it’s such a PITA. You’re right that it’s a personal decision and it’s your money so you decide where you spend it however, the only person you’re hurting is yourself. I consider USA as MY COUNTRY and I’ll go fight in a war for USA since I’m a citizen since I was 18yo. GS makes great shoes/boots and there’s a reason that you are even watching this video on GS boots. You are thinking of buying GS and I think your should because they make great boots/shoes. Most of their products have parts that are mitusa but are only put together in China. It’s a small part of the boot making process. I have been wanting the Alden Tankers for over a year and the only company that makes a NST that looks great is GS. I bought a pair of Ottawa boots in Crimson CXL and it’s one of the best boots I have. They also have awesome customer service. Their boots are super well made, great materials, and great QC. Give them a shot and I bet it’ll change your mind. After all, you’re here for a reason. If you’re super set on NOT buying MIC products then you wouldn’t even been here watching this video.

Most stuff we have is made in China. Including the iPhones many people are watching this video on and almost every athletic shoe. If you refuse to wear made in China shoes all your shoes would be at least $400 and only made of leather

It breaks my heart to see that their shoes are made in china. There is 100% no good reason to make shoes in china, except that it increases profits. Specially when you're making shoes that are over $300 a pair. I will absolutely NEVER do business with grant stone. As HORWEEN I'd even be afraid to ship my leather to a country like china, where they probably have scientist trying to copy their tanning recipes so they can undercut horween and put them out of business. I will buy American made products before chinese made profiteering 100% of the time. I am sorry Phil, but i didn't even finish the video, but I just hate profiteers trying to masquerade as wholesome people. at $100 a pair, yes, you have to make them in china to even be able to sell them at all. BUT, at well over $300 a pair, the only reason to make them in china is to INCREASE THE PROFIT.

This is just racism. Some amazing products are made in China, and what, you are discounting them because it's not from your own country? Hifiman is a Chinese company, they make amazing headphones that cost upwards of $5000. In fact, a lot of amazing Chinese audio companies out there. Reate and WE knives, some of the best production knives in the world, proudly Chinese. So in regards to: " There is 100% no good reason to make shoes in china, except that it increases profits. Specially when you're making shoes that are over $300 a pair." Yes there is a good reason. Have you seen what Aldens cost?? Many of their oxfords and PTBs are $5-$600, and you are out here saying OMG THE ONLY REASON THEY ARE MADE IN CHINA IS TO INCREASE THE PROFIT!111!!! Get real dude. And again, racism with "scientists trying to copy their tanning". First, the leather is going straight to Grant Stone. Second, Horween has been in business for over a hundred years, and you think if a random Chinese pullup leather came out they would go out of business? Third, do you honestly think the thousands of tanneries around the world don't sample each others leathers to compare their own products? I mean hell, Phil had a video on here where he brought competitors shells from the tannery to compare. GM took apart a Ferrari when making their C8 corvette. That's not even considering the fact that you can't just scientifically analyze something like leather and remake it anyway, and then who would buy from a random Chinese tannery with no reputation? Again, just crazy rambling due to racism. There are a lot of things wrong with China to be fair, but making these shoes is not one of them.
@stephenathon
@stephenathon 4 года назад
Did you watch the video? There would be no Grant Stone if they weren’t made in China. Wyatt has connections to these tanneries through his relationship with the factory. They are passing on the savings to the customer, so you are buying a boot that would sell for $500-600 if made in America. I would rather pay $300-400 personally. Their products are amazing, I have four pairs.

It’s funny. Allen Edmonds makes shoes for $300-500 street price that are manufactured in America. Comparing my insistence on American manufacture to racism is the greatest stretch and really good way for you to make this no longer a debate. I don’t care where you’re from. I don’t care what country you live in. I care that my neighbor has a job. I care that my neighbor, who used to make shoes in America, no longer can, because the labor and government subsidized shipping in China makes it cheaper to ship the materials half way around the world. Supporting Chinese manufacture is racist on a systemic level. The communist government in China keeps wages low and suppresses the Chinese people’s access to the World Wide Web. The very thing that we are using to have this discussion, Chines people aren’t allowed to have. I feel that I want the person who is making my shoes to make a fair living. It’s exactly the reason I buy a pair of $300+ shoes in the first place. If I buy shoes that were made right here in America, I can assure that the person who made them has health insurance, paid vacation leave, family medical leave act benefits to take care of their family, bereavement pay, maternity leave, AND A FAIR WAGE tacked right on top of that. I do not want to support a company who uses a labor force paid measly inhumane wages that are forced to live in a closed society without access to the world of information. Period.
@AaronsRandomLife

As far as I’m concerned given the choice between a $400-600 pair of shoes from Allen Edmonds, a $300-$600 pair of Chippewa American made or Redwing American boots, and a $300-$600 pair of shoes or boots made from the same materials but produced in China, I will always chose the boots made by Americans. That way I know I am always supporting people who are given the same benefits as I am. The very reason that Redwing and Chippewa had to start making boots in China to compete on price, reinforces my point here. It’s perfectly profitable to make a pair of shoes or boots in America, where we have OSHA, and health insurance, and people get paid a fair wage. BUT, in order to make a boot or shoe that is profitable at a price point of $200, you must use a labor force that works without any benefits or even a fair wage......China.
