As Neill describes, Professor Sir Andre Geim and Professor Sir Kostya Novoselov of the University of Manchester discovered and isolated a single atomic layer of carbon for the first time in 2004.
This material is called Graphene
Since then, an enormous amount of research and development has taken place developing this truly remarkable material.

I’m so interested but I couldn’t help it, I zoned out. I’m not clever enough to understand it all. I’m really grateful others do and are working to make all our lives better. Saving the planet for one numpty at a time. Still worth being a member 😊👍

Think of a train station. Lots of people, small doors. That's a battery. Electrons fighting to get from A to B get hot. That means more batteries, used at a lower level. Make the doors wider, not so hot. You can use fewer batteries and force more energy (electrons / people) through the battery. Fewer batteries, Lighter cheaper packs. And other stuff.

Wot, Bobby made a boo, boo....no way!! He made three of them!! At least you admit your mistakes, which is better than a particular world leader who prefers to play golf than admit or deal with realities of his mistakes. I love things like this because it opens up the future and the possibilities of material science and it's positive effects to look forward to in our future. Of course we are in the very early days but it's clear there are new things on the horizon. I do hope you will be able to visit them in person and be allowed to film for us to geek out on. This is the type of news one needs when some of the headlines makes one feel a bit more than despondent regarding humanity, but this gives me not only hope, it's hope with excitement to see these new frontiers come fully into being.

I'd really like to be reaassured that graphene isn't the next asbestos or microplastic. A one atom thick sheet of carbon doesn't sound like something I'd want in my drinking water or lungs.

Carbon can be broken down by the body, glass fibre and asbestos cannot. Carbon is essential to all life as we know it and is readily oxidised, hence why you breath out carbon dioxide. Unless you're Mr Spock.

Peter Dawes I thought there was a danger to breathing in graphene. Will the body break down a tiny diamond? graphene is carbon in that optimal structure like you find in diamonds but in a single or few layers. This was early days of graphene when the researchers were saying the thing about breathing it in being dangerous, so maybe they were being cautious with a new material?

In 3 years graphene will be in so many things. In 3D printed concrete buildings, mobile devices, cars, solar panels, in agriculture, in clothing, in cars, in medical devices and medicine delivery. It will make the previously impossible possible

would be very interested to see Helen accompany Robert on that trip to Manchester. IMHO it would compliment & offer an even better demonstration/understanding of the concepts conveyed by Neill. Realize you are eager to show more FC, the program on the outfit mentioned in Estonia on superconductors & recycling of present battery technology in Lower Saxony are particularly episodes that shine best to me.

He mentioned a pack of cards. Take the whole pack. Hole the edge up to some running water. It can't force it way through the compressed edge. Take a single card and repeat. The water flows across both surfaces. Simplistic explanation, but may help?.

The unfair part is that those suffering the most from particulate pollution (living in city apartments) are the ones most unlikely to have access to a home charger. Is there a charger on the market that can be installed by an apartment complex and then be shared by several users and keep track of the electricity bill without to much of a hassle?

These developments make it far less likely for you to need a home charger. Even "battery day" will (imo) reveal cells (packs) which can receive very large charges in a very short time (while shopping, etc) meaning you never need to charge "at home". Its an already void argument and becoming less relevant by the day.

They didn't say it clearly, but I thought the difference between graphene and graphite is like the difference between a sheet of paper and a clump of confetti made of shredded paper. Graphene is macroscopically unbroken sheets, graphite is a compacted mass of broken sheets that are each only microscopically wide.

Much was said about the persistence of graphene, and that production was being scaled up to thousands of tons. From my brief investigation of the topic it does appear that nano particles of graphene my be dangerous and something that we may not want loose in the environment. Nothing was asked about safety or ultimate disposal. Will the world be gradually poisoned by graphene nano particles? There may be a good story about the end of life of graphene containing products and how it is to be managed. At the inception of the development of the new material it is the right time to develop/explore the end-of-life processing, unfortunately the opportunity to ask about this was missed. When you follow up please ask about the full life cycle of the material. Now is the opportunity to ensure that there are no future 'microplastic pollution' type downsides.

Ummmm ... no, no the internal combustion engine and electric powered ... propulsion, work, stuff etc. did not start at the same time at all. The first lighthouse authority out of England was started by a Kings' decree and it was in the late 1400's and it was started because when a wooden ship collided with rocks or shallow rocks on its' voyage to and from the far east to acquire goods this type of a collision could breach the hull of the ship and salt water would then contaminate all of the internal cargo, making the entire voyage a complete waste of time, so, something had to be done! And this is why engineers like myself use the image of an old lighthouse, out in the distance somewhere ... as a symbol of both achievement and truth. :)
