Graphic Designers, artists, and most types of creatives really all have a few things in common, we encounter these mental barriers with things like burnout, imposter syndrome, and creative block.
The worst of them all that I see plague myself and so many talented designers I know is Perfectionism. Trying out something new with this one, so I hope you enjoy it.

As an artist recovering from creative burnout, I have to say my burnout was born out of paralizing perfectionism! So thanks a lot for reminding me of this!

This advice is especially important for those taking design courses. Make sure your work meets the deliverable requirements THEN work on perfecting it. Sadly I have failed some design courses because I focused so hard on perfecting certain details instead of looking at the bigger picture.

love this - this kinda of anti-perfectionist ethos has changed the way I create and been integral to my continued enjoyment of creating art and music

I "try" to work with Design for more than 10 years, I went through several movements, hypes, trends, I saw many people starting from scratch and becoming incredible Designers, including incredible channels like yours, and I basically don't leave the place , all because of this perfectionism, that if I didn't get perfect it would be better not to do it, now I'm here with a mind full of information, little practice without knowing much what to do, I feel like a beginner but without the motivation to be a beginner. For those just starting out I say, perfectionism will get you nowhere, even a BAD job is better than a job not done...

I'm struggling right now with an illustration for a design, because I just "can't get it right" (translation "it's not perfect"). I took a break and watched this video. Really needed to hear that.

I’ve been rebuilding my portfolio while also working my 40 hour day job (which includes weekends). I’ve been teaching myself for the past 3 years. I want a career as a junior graphic designer in a nyc design studio more than anything. The project I’m working on at the moment involves using illustration throughout different touch points of this brand I’m working on. I’ve never done it - adding in hand done illustration- so there’s that aspect of not having done something before and feeling in the dark as well as my perfectionist ways. Time to set some deadlines pronto!

Damn, thank you a lot for these words. When I create something, whatever this is, I always fight intrusive thoughts like 'it doesn't have any point and my art is useless and my art is not enough for showing it to the world', and lately it's kinda hard to deal with those thoughts, but no matter what i am trying to continue 'cause i just sincerely want to create. And your words in this video are really encouraging and give a little bit more strength to fight perfectionism and other 'artists' inner demons' harder

It seems like this is the moment where I've been guided to your channel, (stars aligned or whatever) because I've needed to hear this for awhile. I create a lot for my job, but nothing for myself in nearly 2 years. I worry I feel my creativity and skills slipping as I'm charged to be productive over creative. Since subscribing, I've felted so inspired and motivated to dust things off at home and get back to why I chose this path. Thanks Jesse

I've been struggling for years with this and over the last 1,5 of those I've really gotten better at it. - Best tip for woking with personal projects is setting deadlines and monitoring your behavior. I'm currently learning Blender with the Donut tuts and have caught myself countless times sitting way too long on the lighting, composition etc. - Disruption. If you have ADHD symptoms (either no focus or hyperfocus), take a break from the current project to come back later to it with a fresh set of eyes - Ceramic anecdote reworded: Make mistakes, create bad things and bad art -> Quantity over quality -> Wisdom -> Quicker decisions, better skills -> Efficiency - Smaller-scale, bite-sized projects Some book tips: When Perfect Isn't Good Enough - Martin Antony The Perfectionism Workbook: Proven Strategies to End Procrastination, Accept Yourself, and Achieve Your Goals - Taylor Newendorp Highly recommend *The Inforium* podcast episode on this topic: Is perfectionism a bad thing?

what a beautiful video. the dialogue and messages you convey are so easily absorbed. And as a designer, your design process was fun to watch. I enjoy being able to visualize creative thinking at the same time as you, as you do it. You probably get this quite often but thank you for making videos. It's like you said, if you don't post anything of yours then the world will miss out on the beauty you have to share. That part made me tear up a bit

I always thought it was way off to call myself a perfectionist because I struggled through college so much and could never meet deadlines, but I realize part of what takes me an incredible amount of time is because I'm so shrouded by thoughts like these. You described it so well. I decided to say fuck it a couple weeks ago and just made a graphic design instagram to post my work, I've been fighting for my life not to delete it hahah but this video makes me feel better about posting my sub-par designs for the world to see😅 love your content!!

We just discussed in our typography class today how most of us students struggle with commiting to certain design decisions and in return just float around in uncertainty without ever getting to a final product. The timing with ur video is perfect again lol.

Late night yesterday I had an idea of coming up with some sketches for some t-shirt designs I delved into it for a bit but i felt like i quickly lost myself in trying to come up with something that made feel fulfilled and I got myself thinking: " I like this but where do i even begin from? How can i start moving towards improving the little that i know?". Just moments before going to bed i checked my RU-vid feed and your video about 15 niches in graphic design popped up, i watch it and i finally thought to myself i've stubble upon a channel that could help me out starting this whole design thing. So, far my expectations have been meant but now this video, is specially something i relate to a whole different level. In high school i took multimedia technician and literally most of the time when tasked with doing something i took way more than everyone else in doing stuff. Modelling a simple chair in blender while everyone took like idk maybe a single class to get it done, id take up 2 classes instead. Everything had to measured and be strictly perfect to an insane level. My teachers noticed so and they used to tell my other classmates that i was a perfectionist and i used to take that as a compliment but while everyone else was giving out finished products for evaluation mine were just far from being completed at times. I struggled with this tremendously in the past and I think im sort of getting better in ignoring minor stuff that nobody will even think about looking into but from time to time i might still struggle with it occasionally. In any case, let me tell you that im super grateful for this and other the videos you put out on these topics.

Thank you.. I am a graphic designer who has this problem. I often feel afraid to start, work on design projects from my clients. Am I going to make it as perfect as I have in mind? or I will finish this work in a long time because I want perfection. Done is better than perfect, this will change my mindset. I love your videos. thanks a lot because it's been many years I work just now I got a better answer.
