@@thatvideogamesshow Same here! The devs went bankrupt ages ago though so it's probably unlikely to happen unless someone else bought the rights and obtained the source code :(
The Gamecube looked better than Wii in my opinion, the games simply had a cleaner over all look. Wii in many ways looked less clean than many jaggy PS2 games.
@@realamericannegro977 Some wii games looked like ps2/psp games, because most of these games were designed to run on all three platforms at launch that was simultaneous, so who lost in the visual aspect was the Wii. But there are games that run better on it, like for example Silent Hill shattered memories, which was made for the Wii and then ported to the ps2 and psp, the Wii is much superior. Other than that we would NEVER see games like mario galaxy, metroid prime and Xenoblade Chronicles running on ps2 or psp.
@@llmedeiros2493 Even Metriod Prime 3 didn't look as good as the Gamecube Primes. It was more jaggy, Galaxy was too. Many of these games look incredible on the Dolphin with the graphics cleaned up but Gamecube still looks better. I even think Ps2 does to despite it being weaker
@@realamericannegro977 The Wii video output really was inferior to the Gamecube one.I played the Wii for a long time on a CRT with component cables, one day i was able to run Dolphin from my PC to the same tv. The difference was absurd
One thing you forgot to mention about F Zero GX is that it is the only game natively developed for 16:9 aspect ratio not to mention the solid 60fps. It's truly a technical powerhouse for the GameCube
I didn’t find it very enjoyable though to be honest. I bought it as a show off game but literally only played it when I was trying to convince my friends how good the GameCube was.
@@andyward8430 it's top 10 on my list as far as racing games go. It's actually the hardest racing game i've played. Maybe you didn't enjoy it because you didn't understand it or weren't good at it.
You mentioned that F:Zero GX/AX wasn't developed by Nintendo but you forgot to mention who did make it: Sega. And the game was amazing. I often wish Sega & Nintendo would collaborate more often to make games of this kind of quality.
Sega makes crappy Sonic games that keep selling so they can make cool games like Yakuza and Company of Heros. Sega published like most of my favorite games in the last 10 years.
Resident Evil 4 and Resident Evil Remake still look great to this day. Don't need "photo realistic" graphics to look great. I miss these kind of art styles today.
@That Video Games Show, Yup, would've been so cool if both RE2 1998 and RE3 Nemesis 1999 got the same excellent remake treatment RE1 1996 did. All because GameCube had the family friendly reputation...
I always just had Game Boys, and suddenly I could buy me a tv, a used Gamecube, and Resident Evil 0 en Remake and Wind Waker. Obviously, I was amazed, and never for one second thought Wind Waker was "for kids". But it was the only game of those three I was allowed to play with both my youngest nephew back then and my grandmother watching and actually both enjoying it and even asking to continue playing the next day. Later I played Mario Sunshine with my younger sister, and several years back I gave her a Gamecube with all of the games we used to play back then, which were almost all of the famous first party games, Soul Calibur 2, and several others still (as a collector, I had many doubles when buying someone's collection to fill out my own). Glad I kept my own copies and still have them.
Wind Waker was an unusual instance for me. I always followed closely to gaming sites for releases info, pics and vids. After enjoying Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask on the N64, I had high expectations for the next gen console. Once I start seeing the screenshots of Wind Waker before the game was released. I hated it immediately. If the next game after Majora's Mask looked like Twilight Princess, I would've been extremely excited. I hated the cellshading approach, it looked cheap, lazy, and look liked they cared less with taking advantage on the more powerful console. When the game came out, I bought it, but it was almost a year later I decided to play it because I ran out of games to play. It was funny how much I hated it and during the first hour of gameplay, I ended up loving to play the game. lol I only picked it up since I collected Zelda games.
PN 03, one of my favorite games on GameCube. It was so different, and that's one of the reasons I enjoyed it. I never hear/see it ever mentioned anywhere, so thank you.
"Sadly those people don't know what they are missing". Cellshading games never get old, those games holds up well these days. Great vid, as always! Agree with all the picks! 💖
SOOOOO glad you put Rogue Squadron 2 on here. That lighting, those particles, that speed, those blasters, the intensity and sheer size of the battles are all phenomenal for the time. Factor 5 developed some bangers for Nintendo in their peak. It's splendid.
The lightning and the textures were sick. For me the Original Trilogy didn't need to look better in a videogame as this was almost perfection compared to the movies.
F-Zero GX truely is a masterpiece of game design and optimisation , you have 30 machine together at the same time screaming around at speeds reaching 3000km/h (snaking) on heavily detailed courses and the game still manages to keep a rock solid 60fps AT ALL TIMES. I don’t know what Wizardry Amusement vision used to create F-Zero GX but they did an absolutely phenomenal job
Surprised that Metal Gear Solid: Twin Snakes wasn’t on here, I mean sure it wasn’t a perfect game since it didn’t keep the original intended tone due to the new cutscenes, but it looked amazing
Such a great console! I started collecting the games. So far i have; luigi’s mansion, super mario sunshine, wind waker, ocarina of time, metroid prime, twilight princess, thousand year door, and pikmin. All of them are masterpieces
Thanks for sharing the video! Starting with the amazing Soul Calibur 2, this is the version I play the most thanks to the great GC controller. When I’ve played Resident Evil Remake felt like playing Resident Evil for the first time, and Resident Evil 4 blew my mind on GC with those graphics. Metroid Prime saga amazing visuals, F Zero amazing visuals, Zelda Wind Waker breathtaking visuals. The Game Cube is an amazing console! Thanks for sharing your videos, incredible as always!
Soul Calibur 2 on GC blew me away as a kid. Some of the best graphics I'd ever seen on a console I owned. I first got the N64 when most of my friends already had PS2s or Xboxes, so by the time I got the GC after selling all my old toys at a yard sale, I was blown away. I played the shit out of the demo disc that came with it. SC2 was one of the demos, and I bought it as soon as I could after seeing the graphics and loving the controls.
I think it's so great how the initial reactions to Wind Waker were so negative and it's since grown to be a really beloved aesthetic. I think it's been helped by the fact that Nintendo have continued to make a huge variety of different Zelda games that it means the sort of weird goofyness of Wind Waker doesn't feel so out of place anymore. After all it's a series that has Links Awakening, Twilight Princess, Breath of the Wild and Zelda 2 - all really totally different games only loosely connected visually. It wasn't really the case in 2000 SO I don't blame people for their negative reaction - there was a much more defined view of how Zelda SHOULD look back then. Thank god it's change though - it's lead to some amazing games!
Good collection of games. Star fox adventures while not a great game, definitely looked superb for the time if I recall. The original Luigi’s mansion and smash bros melee were visual spectacles back then as well.
Great video for a great system. The cube was amazing and frequently put the PS2 in the shade in terms of graphics. Wind Waker genuinely still looks better than 99% of today’s games
It look better than PS2 but didn't put it to shame. PS2 actually go toe to toe with GC and Xbox and even looks better aesthetically in many cases of you compare the best looking exclusives from each system.
Compare resident evil 4 from GC to PS2 and then let me know if you still feel the same. PS2 couldn't keep up with the dreamcast for 480p games, let alone GC and Xbox.
Yes, I thought it was ridiculous that Star Fox Adventures, Super Monkey Ball, Pikmin, Zelda Twilight Princess, Wave Race Blue Storm, and some others somehow didn't make this list when they clearly deserve to be on this list sooner than some of the games listed. If games like Killer 7, Wind Waker, and Mario Sunshine make this list then that opens the floodgates for a bunch of other games such as 1080 Avalanche, Mario Golf, Star Fox Assault, and others graphically on par with those games.
This list is amazing, a really well-made review and demonstration of visual aspect of the games of that era! I had a PC and didn't even know about most of the games presented here, but the craft of developers at that time, what they were able to achieve, amazes me
I remember getting wind waker and my friends making fun of me for buying a cartoon game when realism was the rage. Then they came over and watched me play only to ohh and ahh at the visuals and the game in action. Still shots truly don't do the art style Justice. Edit. Resident Evil 0 also looked incredible.
Lost Kingdoms 1 & 2 are fantastic hidden gem games. When Lost Kingdoms 2 came out, that game really blew me away in terms of graphics, especially with the cutscenes. The downgraded attacks visual was a but offputting when compared to the first game but overall it's a beautiful game.
Eternal darkness had really really good bad graphics. Over time I found the game to be beautiful but there are elements of it (character models in particular) that were kind of bad even back then. Still one of my favorite games ever.
I saw Wave Race: Blue Storm at the start of the video and was hoping you'd talk about it. The character models weren't super detailed, but the water and weather effects were so good.
@@thatvideogamesshow Play it on import, the PAL version screws the physics engine, same with 1080 which uses the same engine. I bought a Japanese Wave Race and a US 1080 which I still have.
I couldn't afford a PS2 back in the day, Resident Evil 4 being an exclusive made it worth owning a GameCube for me. I wasn't a fan of the visuals in Wind Waker either but then I played it. Now it's one of my favorite Zelda titles of all time. One of my favorite GameCube games was Turok Evolution.
@@thatvideogamesshow I rented Turok 64 from my local hang out spot every weekend when I was a kid. When I found out Turok Evolution was coming, I knew it was a must have. I still prefer it over Turok 64 and the 2008 release.
@@Cautious_Gamer Night Dive studios remastered Turok from the N64 onto the PC, it's great. They also did Forsaken and have left the aesthetic mostly like the N64 version but it now has all the content of all versions in one package, loved Forsaken64 though the techno tunes mean my neighbours bloody hated it. 😁
The Nintendo Game Cube was one of the best systems in it's prime, I have played Soul Caliber 2/with Link, I do own Resident Evil 1 remake, Super Mario Sunshine, Resident Evil 4, Legend Of Zelda Wind Waker, and F-Zero GX, the Game Cube was a great system and thanks for giving it credit TVGS ✌️
I know game graphics have vastly improved since, but i think Metroid Prime series still looks fantastic. I'd be totally happy still playing games of that quality but with modern gameplay & norms. The artists still had plenty of space to express themselves and that's what matters.
Yep I know it looks better than playing with Wii components. Even Monster Svideo on the actual GV looks better than playing GC games on Wii with Monster Components
@@realamericannegro977 Scart was even better, and yes I do own the monster Svid, I used it on my N64, but you never got RGB in the States. Finding a decent RGB cable was a pain though because despite what RU-vidrs say now the official Ninty RGB cable is shit.
Loved Eternal Darkness, my 100%ed game save still works to this day. 😀. If RE remake had a control system like ED:SR it would have been a lot better. Fun fact: If you have an Action Replay you can play Code Veronica on the Cube as an actual 1st person shooter.
I'm curious how you guys capture this high-res footage, I can tell its not emulators. But its widescreen and high res its not just an captured hdmi adaptor to the actual console is it?
@@_lean_mean_dean_ Interesting. I'm waiting reasonable price for Bayonetta in PS store , maybe should look Bayonetta & Vanquish double pack for reasonable price.
@@_lean_mean_dean_ yup. I remember seeing it in a old gaming mag she even touted a gun. I think PNO3 was wasted potential. Capcom changed it for the worst.
Nice vídeo, as always. My take on Zelda: Nintendo didn’t know how to read the room back then. Everybody was expecting the “adult” Zelda game in the same style of the demo at Shoshinkai . If Nintendo had release an “adult” Zelda before the Wind Waker, Wind Waker would have made the splash they were aiming for.
I never loved cell shaded but its was well implemented in most cases, Mario being the worse mostly because all levels are "beachy" so they all look the same to me, also lots of 3rd parties went for the realistic but very styled graphics, that helps lower the load on the system while still keeping really good visuals. These days developers and people focus too much in hyper realism and at the end we get games that are not optimized, running at resolutions that are too low for modern screens and choppy resolutions. They are supposed to games, styled, fun, fluid not movies.
*it was *the worst (opposite of "best") worse = opposite of "better" *me. Also, lots (to fix your comma splice run-on) *graphics. That (another comma splice) *These days, developers *focus too much _on_ *hyperrealism *supposed to be games: styled *fun, and fluid. Not
GC could put 4 times the polygons on screen compared to the PS2 with way more advanced textures and lighting, it could also double the output of the OG Xbox but Nintendo were punished for being honest about their specs where MS just pulled a number out of their arse and Sony just halved the Number. The highest polygon count on an Xbox title was 10 million at 30FPS at the end of cycle where Rogue Squadron 2 was a launch title pushing 15 million at 60FPS while still running it's full suite of lighting effects which were still more advanced than Xbox's if only slightly.
Great video agree gamecube power will always be remember in the games that change the video game industry! From horror survival genre to the open world exploration to racing at 480p 60 fps!
The Resident evil remake looks identical to the HD release. 😳😵 Saddens me that I won't easily be able to experience GameCube games the way it were intended. Gamecube was not available in 🇿🇦. Still hoping to one day get a Wii U and be able to play GameCube games in HD. Edit: "Wind waker is like marmite, you either love it or hate it" I like cell shaded games, but not marmite, I prefer Boveril. 😂
I just started playing it for the first time tonight. Even using standard composite cables into a 4k tv, it looks surprisingly good. Add in the blistering speed and this game must have blown people away on its release.
The gamecube had more memorable games then PS2 because they put so much effort into the graphics and overall fun factor Resident evil 1 still looks amazing to this day and when RE4 was ported to the PS2 it was the weakest port and Super mario sunshine is so much fun.
I have Wii and Xbox to, some games GameCube kick ass Xbox games!! GameCube was strong because most games run offline internet, that reason high frame rate, great textures
Rogue Squadron 3 should be here instead of 2, for starters it features a split screen version of 2 and some of the rehashed levels - the escape from Hoth being the best example, are mind blowing for the shear number of enemies if nothing else. Plus you get the best speeder-bike chase ever! Sure the games not as good but...
I can’t think of anything that looked better than resident evil remake or resident evil 0 on the game cube. Those 2 games were the only reason I got the game cube. At the time those games were still game cube exclusives.
Big gamecube fan. Have a boxed console plus a open one. Missing killer 7 but have the rest of the games and I fully agree with your video. Awesome little system.
Whenever I see its release date as 2002, I always end up saying to myself "How?". The prerendering and lighting techniques are a given, but the artistic direction alone is pretty much akin to the old painterly and sculpting masters being given game development tools. I'd argue the visuals stand the test of time because of timeless artistic principles. The console's graphical capabilities are evident, though aren't reason enough.
Ocarina is mine because it was mind blowing at the time, I remember being in my local cinema when the first full trailer broadcast and there was an audible gasp by the audience.
@@idklol4197 Yup, it's to promote the scan mechanic too. You get used to it quickly and actually the twin stick system wasn't standardised at this point so control systems on 6th gen were the wild west compared to now where most games control the same.
@@darthwiizius was it really to promote scanning or did form dictate function? Upon reflection, I seem to only remember four directional inputs allowed in games like melee, sunshine, and wind waker. The c stick was not an analog stick so retro studios had to work around that.
@@idklol4197 The C-stick is an analogue it just doesn't have a dome top because the twin stick format wasn't standardised at that time, which is odd as it was unveiled in Goldeneye first(yes RU-vidrs it didn't come from that Aliens game on PS first) by using 2 N64 pads at once. Metroid was built as a first person adventure not a first person shooter so the scan mechanic was critical for learning the world and lore. Fun fact: Samus' suit was the highest polygon model created in the 6th gen and is fully rendered at all times because it was the only way to animate the transition in and out of ball mode smoothly.
