Algebra I on Khan Academy: Algebra is the language through which we describe patterns. Think of it as a shorthand, of sorts. As opposed to having to do something over and over again, algebra gives you a simple way to express that repetitive process. It's also seen as a "gatekeeper" subject. Once you achieve an understanding of algebra, the higher-level math subjects become accessible to you. Without it, it's impossible to move forward. It's used by people with lots of different jobs, like carpentry, engineering, and fashion design. In these tutorials, we'll cover a lot of ground. Some of the topics include linear equations, linear inequalities, linear functions, systems of equations, factoring expressions, quadratic expressions, exponents, functions, and ratios.
About Khan Academy: Khan Academy offers practice exercises, instructional videos, and a personalized learning dashboard that empower learners to study at their own pace in and outside of the classroom. We tackle math, science, computer programming, history, art history, economics, and more. Our math missions guide learners from kindergarten to calculus using state-of-the-art, adaptive technology that identifies strengths and learning gaps. We've also partnered with institutions like NASA, The Museum of Modern Art, The California Academy of Sciences, and MIT to offer specialized content.

I love Sal however at the beginning of his explanation he says that three points determine the graph of a parabola is misleading. If you plug in x = {-1,0,1} those points look like they make a straight line, a student who is a just learning about graphing parabolas is not going to be able to determine the shape.

The original equation is in the form y=ax^2+bx+c. Plug it into the formula -b/2a to find the x coordinate. Then plug it back into the original problem to find the y coordinate.

2 is right in between 3 and 1 and the parabola is always right in-between the two zeros
@monstermon2009
@monstermon2009 11 месяцев назад
So basically, on a line, it was directly in between (1,0) and (3,0). So, ignoring the y value, what is in between 1 and 3 on a number line? Number 2. So the vertex is (2, y), and then we found y. What I dont get is how to find the vertex if it wasn't that clear? How do I work it out? If anyone has any video links, I'd appreciate it.

I don't get why the examples Sal gives are always ridiculously easy? Oh, wow, it's all divisible by 5, what a coincidence! Too bad no other problem has that convenience. So this is not helpful at all.
@CloudGOML
@CloudGOML 8 лет назад
+AliceDiableaux Well, I mean you can just use the quadratic formula to find the roots, and then use the x= -b/2a formula to find the x coordinate of the vertex, and then when you find that you can put the x coordinate of the vertex into the original quadratic equation to find the corresponding y coordinate; both of those values will give you the vertex. This video might not be too helpful for all types of quadratic equations, but Sal went over both of the quadratic formula and the x= -b/2a formula. In both cases you don't even need to change the quadratic equation from standard form.
@AliceDiableaux
@AliceDiableaux 8 лет назад
Rudy Steiner I get that, but it would still really help to see someone solve a harder problem, if you struggle with math the way I do.
