I fish all tree materials regularly. What you gave, was a pretty good explanation, cooking things down to the basic.

I have both slow and fast glass rods. The short one a 7' is super slow and the 8-1/2' one is pretty much just a stick. They're both good in their own way. I find all rods to be very unique from one another no Matter the material.

Can you not see the grains? Is it hexoganol or cylindrical?

Thanks for the info. Newbie Question: Most people suggest a rod around 9’ for beginners- That limits one to graphite rods(at least in a 4wt) I get the benefits of a longer rod, but am interested in fiberglass. Would it be a bad idea to ignore this advice and start with a shorter fiberglass rod? Thanks!

Well, I guess it depends on how willing you are to learn casting before fishing :/ I know many that learn on bamboo or glass and then adjust to graphite. I won't say DONT learn on it, but remember they fish and cast differently. I like to overload a fiberglass rod with new casters to feel the rod load, but rhen switch to graphite when they cast to fish after a few lessons and after getting acclimated to the faster rods. The answer isn't DONT, but remember they will act differently.

Are there any other types of rods out there?

They make some composites, and some bamboo aren't spli cane, but these are really the only 3

I already have a 5wt 9ft rod, but just yesterday I went to a fly shop where almost everything is $800, but I found one for only $90. It was a 7ft 6in 3wt echo base, I wanted to know if you think it is worth it to get it, and if it will be much different than my 5wt, what different presentations I can throw on it, and if echo is a good company.

VERY different, but what would your target use be for the rod?

Henry I personally like longer rods for small streams because I feel I can better mind the line. However, that is only if you have back cast room.

@@TwigNTimberFishingOutdoors in the summer it usually gets pretty overgrown, so I was looking for a shorter rod, but what would you suggest to use with a shorter rod?
