Grasmere: Village of surprises

Even hardened Lake District lovers like us discovered that there is a lot more to Grasmere than meets the eye in this half term day out in and around the village. Names normally associated with Grasmere, such as Wordsworth, Grasmere Gingerbread and Heaton Cooper, are much in evidence, but there is a lot more to discover in this pretty Lake District village.

Absolutely loving your channel videos. Choice of music on this particular one is superb, it took me back to by-gone years. The narration, content and the information you provide is second to none.

Thank you. Despite the difficulties caused by Storm Dennis at the time, it was a very enjoyable video to make. I'm pleased it has been so well received.

Thank you. It was a lovely video to shoot. When I popped into the jigsaw shop last year the lady in there greeted me with the words, 'Great to see you again, try not to get lost this time!'

Thank you Rebecca. Hope you have a fabulous time when you get there. A couple of the shops have changed hands, but there are still 30,000 jigsaws to be had, and the Gingerbread tastes just as good as ever.

I hope no one ever doubts the beneficial effect a pretty view has upon the soul. Thank you Eric. Thomas Gray would no doubt have something to say about your visits to a country churchyard. Visits to shops in Cumbria can be great fun.

Thank you, really enjoyed this video...love this area but don't care much for the gingerbread from the little shop...it's a "must try" though I'm not sure how many people go back for more..lol :)

Thank you +earlzy100 Personally I don't like it, I'm not keen on ginger, but a friend of mine will drive 40 miles on a Saturday to buy it. Actually parks in Grasmere, goes to the Gingerbread shop, buys loads, and then goes home. She could buy online, but she doesn't as she enjoys the drive. The shop was busy while we were filming.

Cute video. I heard that there is a Buddhist center in the Lake Diatrict. Have you ever been?
@jonathancraigguides
@jonathancraigguides 3 года назад
Thank you. There is a Buddhist centre at Conishead Priory, which is just outside the National Park close to the town of Ulverston. I have not been, but I know it is a place of pilgrimage for many hundreds of Buddhists from all around the globe. The Priory has had an interesting history. It originally dates from the 12th century, and over the last 800 years has had many uses, including as a Monastery and Hospital, a private residence, a hydropathic spa, a sanatorium for sick and injured miners, and a wartime hospital for wounded soldiers.

Erik what type of camera do. You use Mike mo?lloy Dublin
@jonathancraigguides
@jonathancraigguides 6 лет назад
Hello Michael. It is a Canon 1100D, which is a DSLR, although not the highest range. The reason I use it is because it takes a 1280 x 720 shot, which offers options for You Tube and other online platforms which do not use as high resolution. It is easy to carry, and has been able to withstand a number of knocks and accidents. In the past three years, whilst sitting on a tripod, it has been knocked over the side of a mountain (a sheep was interested in it) charged by a goat, and got very, very wet. It has a long battery life, and is easy to use and focus. There are better video cameras, and there are smaller video cameras, but I like my Canon.

What would you say is your favourite wainwright fell?
@jonathancraigguides
@jonathancraigguides 3 года назад
To me, Wainwright Fells are a bit like food. You have to be in the right mood to enjoy a particular dish. EG: I love a pizza on a Saturday night in winter, but not so keen on them midweek in summer for some reason. With fells, it all depends on the time of year, the weather, and basically how I'm feeling. Of course, the reality is that once on the fell they are all wonderful, it is just that some are more wonderful than others. I love Bowfell. I am a big fan of the ascent of Skiddaw via Ullock Pike and Longside Edge. The Coledale Round has long been a favourite, especially Causey Pike, an absolute joy in the right conditions. However, I also love some of the lower fells. I've ascended School Knott well over 5,000 times - even so, I look forward to the next time I walk it. But, if I had to pick a favourite I'd say it would have to be Loughrigg. That has not always been the case, when I was younger Bowfell would always get my vote. Oh, and mustn't forget the Northern Fells, especially Carrock Fell, which is not only different in character to those surrounding it, but also has much human history attached to it.

Beautifully made video of mine and my late Wife's favourite part of the Lake District. I must correct you however on your description of the body of water around Grasmere. It is not a lake. Of course I'm only nit-picking. Check out our comprehensive list of rides around the English Lake District at Biker Paul. Thank you.
@jonathancraigguides
@jonathancraigguides 6 лет назад
Thank you Biker Paul. You are allowed to nit pick at Christmas. Or as a friend of mine put it one day when discussing Windermere (with or without the word Lake), I really doesn't matter what you call it, when you fall in it is still very wet!!
