Jim Barron CEO of Future Grass Technology, gives a run on his farm he gives an insight into the system he is running on his farm. What inspired him to get into manufacturing zero grazers to help farmers get the most from the grass on their farm, which allows them to save on costs such as meal, and fertiliser enabling them to get bigger profit margin for their end product.

It's amazing how the invention of these machines makes harvesting easier

We have one great job, graze 8months of the year on avrage, less meal fed, lower silage acres required, most people top the fields after grazing anyway so the only extra fuel is from farm to field the 2 drum nower isnt a hard drive, we are zerograzing 6 mile round trip from the farm would be a long walk for the cows, bringing wet grass in to cows is nonsense they dont dry it before they eat it in the field and you can run more cows. They dont work on every farm but were it does it does well

Glad to hear zero grazing is working well for you. We think it is a great system.

This got me interested, so you still let your cows be outside even when using zero grazing method? I’ve always dismissed the method because cows that can be outside are happy cows and happy cows produce more milk and I thought zero grazing was not letting them outside and bringing in the grass to them… Did i understad it right that its like a mix of both? (Sorry if my English isn’t on top i’m from Sweden)

Yes, you can let them out on the field and zero graze together. There are more videos coming up with different systems farmers use, stay tuned.

What about increasing use of diesel and labour.
@grasstechnology
@grasstechnology Год назад
Well there is no denying that it there is some diesel and labour costs, BUT it also takes labour to bring cows, put cows back out. We have no fences, no lane ways, no stones in feet from walking cows up and down lanes, no water trough issues, less contractor charges, less meal used, less fertiliser AND we can graze any field no matter the location on farm. MANY benefits.
@jonstevensmaplegrovefarms3754
@Grass Technology Ltd ok I agree this can be a great tool, in the USA we called them green choppers. But to say cutting and removing hay vs grazing needs less fertilizer is complete bullcrap, pardon the pun but grazing only removes a few lbs of P and K while removing hay crop removes hundreds of lbs of P&K. Then think about the manure and urine that are putting carbon and N into the soil vs removing carbon and buying N.

@Jon Stevens Maple Grove Farms Your dead right, many farmers are also delighted during the summer because it means no slurry to deal with. I know a fella with cows housed full time. His daily routine is, milk cows, zero graze, feed cows, take off zero grazer, put on slurry tank, spread slurry, take off tank, put zero grazer back on. His tractor is putting up 1000s of hours, his labour has increased hugely and he is hugely regretting buying a zero grazer. Before he was finished morning routine at 10 am, now he's not finished until 12. Pros and cons.

All well and good if it’s dry enough to cut grass.

Zero grazer will cut grass in a lot worse conditions than you will actively graze cattle. Machine on a field that hasn’t been tramped does a lot less damage than animals. Zero grazer can get out earlier and stay out longer than animals grazing. We have done significant tests and cows just drink less water at the feeding trough. It takes a long length of bad weather to start to bring the DM down in the actual grass.

Grass technology is good but in the days of constant rain it's a headache.second fresh green grass no matter what kind contains a lot of moisture and protein content is very low so it gives less energy to the animal.

What about all this wet grass you can get in this country seen zero drawing water dropping off zero graser on the road I am on bale more consisting less work no need to go for watery grass on a wet day
@grasstechnology
@grasstechnology Год назад
Most farmers we speak to have their own way of dealing with this, some will cut an extra load the day before. It's a lot easier on ground compared cows when the land is wet.
