Grassdale Feedlot - Australia's biggest feedlot

Grassdale Feedlot is located near Dalby in Queensland. Since its recent government-funded expansion, it is now Australia's biggest feedlot, holding around 70,000 cattle, many who have no access to shade. The feedlot's perimeter is around 6.5kms. This feedlot is owned by Mort & Co.
Cattle remain on these feedlots for anywhere from 60 to 400 days, with no opportunity to graze on grass. They are instead fed a highly unnatural diet of grain to 'fatten them up' prior to being slaughtered.

In a growing world we need to be more sustainable and by operating a feedlot in this manner only improves efficiency and as far as anyone who says the animals are not being cared for in a humane manner would not have very much knowledge in this industry. I am a feedlot owner in Iowa. Our number one concern is the care of our cattle and so would be the case here in this beautiful feedlot. Being sustainable means operating a business in the most efficient manner from farm to table in the most respectable way for the owner, the community and our world. I hope we can close the gap from the farm to the consumer in order to have better transparency in our industry.

I would dispute the period of fattening is up to 400 days, that would be a complete money looser. 60 to 150 days is the usual fattening period for beef breeds. Looks very clean and well run.

Farmers care diligently for their animals, they love to grow food and share this natural protein with the world - it's better than ending up with famine and war during which stronger countries invade and steal from weaker countries. These Australian animals are well taken care of in farms run by farmers who care about what they are doing - having the cattle roaming out in the harsh, dry country, unsupervised, is an old fashioned and out of date form of Australian cattle farming. Many countries have to lock their animals up and hand feed them during the winter months - it's not unnatural at all, it's safer and kinder to the animals. Some countries have lots of rolling hills and grass but not much room overall. Australia has perfected dry country farming; we are an example to other countries who also suffer from poor land or lack of big rainfall. We have loads of room, so feed lots are away from housing and urban areas and the animals are sheltered, watered and fed, not left to survive alone. The only problem I have is when I see "government sponsored", which means government interference or see farming falling into the hands of foreign firms. Or worse see farms taken over by a few elitist types who will possibly monopolize food production or, in their idealistic, fanatical fervor, ruin modern farming and plunge the poorer people of world back into famine again. We all know that there are violent activists attacking farming based on their personal feelings, veganism, or some claim a sort or pagan religious fanaticism to "save the planet", they don't care about the needs of the poorer people of the world. Dangerous and foolish people. From what I hear these farms are regularly supervised regarding animal cruelty.

What a mess. Here in Ireland or cattle are grass fed which is much better system and way healthier meat at the end. These feedlots are anything but natural and should be outlawed. Let's hope these new environmental laws around the world stop these operations.

In what way is it a “much better system” and besides grain fed beef tastes way better. Keep dreaming, lot feeding while never stop.
