I met the Dead in March of 1971 when I asked Jerry if I could sit behind the amps and he let me I go between the first stack and the first person I met is Bear dropping liquid acid on the back of people’s hands and then they licked it off. I stuck my hand out and he put four big drops on the back of my hand and I licked it off. I got hooked up with Bear local dealer. I met my wife at a show. I helped him get money selling his goods with the money going to help him build The Wall Of Sound. I met many people involved with making LSD and my best friend and I had been selling pot and hash, in small amounts to our friends. We did this for 20 years. He worked with his father in his auto repair business. We did that for almost 20 years. One of our best connections was a retired narcotics detective. let’s just say he had the best of whatever it happened to be. Thanks Dead and the entire family. Roll Away The Dew ⚡️🎸⚡️

@stephentmarksberry4484 Bear used to come over by us during intermission at shows he attended as a fan. We would hang by a stretch of tables for Rex Foundation and other foundations/charities. He always carried a big book filled with buckles he designed, in case people were interested. We spoke a lot about the early days of the Dead, before I became a Head. And now I'm beginning to tear up again, from missing him.

Was only 12 when this show came to town so too young. The Grateful Dead, Janis Joplin, the Band, Delaney and Bonnie, Buddy Guy.....played Toronto, Winnipeg and Calgary and the promoter went broke from buying liquor for the train they rode on.

Ron "Pigpen" McKernan on that harp, another member of the 27 club. Love some early Dead.

A young Jerry? They're ALL young, the band had only been together for about five years at this point. Pigpen on the harp, keepin' it real. To see what The Dead was about, just watch "The Grateful Dead Movie", which was recorded in October 1974 at Winterland in San Francisco, and released in 1977. Directed by Jerry Garcia. He called it a "home movie" about the band. Plus you get to see The Wall Of Sound in action, and being assembled, plus some behind the scenes moments, and a cool 8 minute animation at the start of the movie.

Biz, I think you would've LOVED being at a Dead show. I started going in the mid 80's, and it was so mind-blowing for me. I'd never been in a large crowd filled with so many people with genuine smiles before. The vibes, and the energy was electric and magical. Next from The Grateful Dead?? I'm going to suggest "Lost Sailor/Saint of Circumstance", which is one of Bob Weir's songs. It's utterly beautiful.

You should try to check out the “The Grateful Dead Movie”(1977)… you can find it on the official Grateful Dead RU-vid channel.

@bobseki7051 it really is amazing that this band made so many shows available for listening to and/or recording them for free. Yes, there were a couple of bands that allowed people to record from their seats without using mic stands. The Dead often had a complete section for Tapers, right behind or next to the soundboards.

Yes. You should watch this whole movie. It's many great artists. That's Pigpen on harmonica he was the blues guy and mostly sang those songs. Check out "Hard to Handel" from this same show. RIP.

the 91 show at Giants stadium, where the Dead played this gem was awesome. You can pull up a copy of New Speedway Boogie from that show on youtube.

Oh how I wish I was aboard that train. This is from the movie, which is a must see. The best music was played on the train. ✌️❤️🎶

This song is about the free concert at Altamont Speedway where the Hells Angels were invited to be stage security and ended up beating several people and stabbing one guy to death. I was at that concert, it could have been great but there just wasn't time or resources enough to provide for the hundred or two thousand of us who showed up, and of course the Rolling Stones, who wanted to hold counter culture event like Woodstock and film it held up their performance to amp up the audience, who GOT amped and crowded the stage, triggering the Angels. Listen to the studio version with all the lyrics to get the Dead's take on what turned out to be a bad trip.

This is actually from a documentary, it's available on RU-vid. It's MAINLY about the Dead, it's a great documentary. It's called Festival Express.
