I went to college for music. I'm only a percussionist, but this is the most theoretically correct and auditorrily stimulating solo that I've ever heard in my life. I listen to this solo nightly. And it always makes me smile... Always...
@@AcolisI’d much rather hear somebody sing their heart out and tell a story than have them sing every note in tune. Listen to the old (early 20th century) blues singers and old folkies; they had a raw, less polished sound. That’s where the Dead’s roots were.
This is by far one of the most emotional and heartfelt performances Jerry had in his later years. Such a joy to see that smile after he nails that solo, with shaky hands and all. We all need to give this man so much credit for revolutionizing the definition of what music can mean. Thank you Jerry, rest in peace my friend
When I listened to Peggy o first time, it was 1983 sometime in October. My eyes were filled with tears back then, and it just gives that sentimental feeling everytime When I listen. Nowadays, I change Peggy O to Jodi O, for my breast cancer survivor wife. Thank you Jerry O
This is one of the songs he played the last time I saw Him. Was at the ' 95 Vermont show. Makes me misty...F-ing Hell we all miss you Jer, thanks for taking the time to look every one of us in the eyes when you played live for us. I feel like you are my second Father. PEACE BRO!
May 1995 Sam Boyd Stadium Las Vegas... He looked and sounded not great... I knew I'd never seen him again... he died two months later. It was forever over... Had no interest in all the BS vapors of continuing.... Jerry Garcia was the Grateful Dead.
If people listened to more music like the Grateful Dead, Earth would be paradise...could you imagine 7 billion people living together with great music and joy in their heart, watching as our species goes out to explore space and spread the good news?
i dont mean to be offtopic but does anyone know a trick to log back into an Instagram account?? I stupidly forgot the login password. I appreciate any tricks you can offer me.
I'm 30 and watching this makes me want to cry. I will never exist while Jerry is alive for the rest of my life. Moments like these will slip further and further away from me. But I'm still thankful for having had them. Something strikes me while listening to this that just makes me feel like Jerry knew his time was coming to an end. It's both sad and beautiful as most of the best things are.
@Samuel Madsen I'm 48 and only saw the Dead with Jerry twice in 1992 and 1993. Could have seen them a lot more starting the late '80s, but I was a metal head at that point and hadn't yet found the other side yet. It's tough thinking about all the missed opportunities.
casey....5.3.87 frost amphitheatre. peggy-o. nothing compares. I promise you'll get a better story. the most perfect story ever and never forget it :-)
@@lucylane7397both Irish and Scots copied it from English tavern and country music..they even first found bagpipes and tin whistle with the English..the Bagpipes more than likely came other in the first roman invasion from the Conquered celt tribes of Anatolia who was probably seconded into Roman legions with the Gauls or came with Greek Scribes or apothecarys Romans used, , ceaser actually said the Native Britons was similar in Language and culture to Gauls the reasons they was used aswell as celtabrians of northern Spain to subdue the native populas and prevent rebellion ...
Well put, I never measured my grace per lb..lolThe big guy is the greatest storyteller I ever heard..He would be the first to say he was just a man, zipped his zipper up just like the rest of us..He just happened to have a gift that I considered precious...Never in my life have I ever been with 50,000 people who would would want to be no other place but here..
I raise my hand with you, my friend's water pipe's burst in the apartment above him on august 9th, 1995......sadly... he saw it as all the deadheads in the world crying all at once.Peace
This is by far! One of the most beautiful songs ever written / performed!!! Keep the faith and keep on jamming Jerry! Bring us home to the promise land!!
I remember being 23 and bailing on live shows because it was getting too weird and Jerry was deep in the sht again. I wished I had stuck around. Weird thing is that I'm now the same age Jerry was here, look sort of like him without having tried to, and have the same lifestyle. It's a hard age to try to reverse decades long vices.
Jerry pulls emotion from God and lets us mortals here it. Bless him. He is SORELY missed. I smoked weed with him in 1975 backstage when he played with Merle Saunders. It was supposed to be mine; I promised him great Jamaican weed I was running from Jamaica but I changed shirts before the concert and the joins I rolled were in the shirt I didn't wear. "No problem." said Jerry. We'll smoke mine". I was embarrassed but got pretty high, so....there's that.
Jerry really does a good job here! I respect your notion that this is the best live version ever. My personal favorite is at The Paladium NY NY 4/30/77 and is definitely worth checking out if you love this song
Josh Kirschenbaum That N.Y. Palladium is a good and therefore fairly famous '77 choice! I'm about to re-check out some of these other suggestions including Englishtown, N.J. 1977-9-3(Sat) which I haven't heard in quite a while but I can't forget that also at Englishtown the 'Eyes of the World' and 'Mississippi 1/2 Step Uptown Toodaloo' are both truly mind blowing, for sure! In any case, you're on the ball and this one here from definitely Vegas '94 as it appears others also have rightfully determined. Not to be too egotistical; we just have to teach the young folks where it's really at! I'm sure you'll agree? Augy, San Diego
So this was '94? Amazing, just amazing. I saw Dead & Co. this summer 4 times and John was great...BUT, to hear Jerry playing this song in his impossible to emulate style, is to be reminded what a unique talent Jerry was. I got to see him play this song live once, definitely one of my favorites, and possibly is my favorite. Love this video, thanks so much for posting.
He left us all to soon... What a beautiful soul!!! This song brings tears to all that are blessed to hear it. True talent and he loved each and every one of us.. RIP... I know they are loving hearing you in Heaven my friend.
I have to agree at this point. I would have to go thru all the old tapes and SBD's. But I saw them over 100 times and can say this is a very melodic, pretty and high energy version of this classic. Thanks for the post.
i was at this show....all of 15 years old. my mom let me travel down from Salt Lake City. Can't even begin to explain how 'grateful' I am to her and to the dead. I saw him before August of 95'
My first show was in 73 my parents took me and years later I came back and of course found my people saw as many shows as I could and no other band I can think of can cause me to tear up from joy or good memories of seeing the boys or my dad introducing me to some of the best rock and roll groups - The Who- Rolling Stones- moody blues- doors you know REAL classic rock and roll not bubble gum one hit wonders put together in the want ads but real talent that made incredible music miss my dad jerry and all the good ones but the music will live past us thank god and with billy strings I saw a light I hadn’t seen in some time and supporting cast all the way around incredibly talented I’m freaking blessed to have seen some shows hope to catch more🙏😁👍💪😇
This appears to be Las Vegas, Sam Boyd Stadium, I was standing in the 2nd row when he played this. I won't forget that purple shirt. Vince Welnick on the boards did a pretty good job! It was a 101 degrees at night and they had stations where they sprayed folks with cold water hoses and filled water bottles. We met sooo many nice folks there :)
I was blessed to see the dead 14 shows in the early 90's.. My first show was dylan and the dead in Philly. I am so glad l have those memories. If you don't like the dead you're not listening.. Miss you jerry. Life is beautiful and some don't see it..
I searched archive.org for every version of Peggy O. I put them in chronological order and listened to every live version they ever played over a 2 week period. I This was not in my top 5 list. Unfortunately, I lost my iPod that had my favorite version but it was a 1978 show. Can't remember the specific show. I would highly HIGHLY recommend listening to every version in a row. It will take 2 to 3 weeks but trust me. Just do it.
I got into the Dead just a few months ago, and this song strikes such a chord with me. I’ve watched most every performance on RU-vid. I now know what I must do next. Thank you!
@@campsjams Andrew, it seems like you'd get bored listening to 1 song hundreds of times over a short time frame but I promise, you will love this exercise. I've tried it with other songs but just couldn't get into it like with Peggy O. It didn't work for St Stephen or Dark Star. I'm not sure those songs are structured for this way to listen to them. I think next I will try it with Row Jimmy or Althea.
Jerry had many great attributes but perhaps his greatest is that he never ran out of things to say with his solos. Peggy-O ain't all that complicated and they played it hundreds of times, yet here we are discussing which version is best all because of the variety of killer solos Jerry turned in on this tune. Me, myself, personally? I like '82 Peggy-O. I know most heads don't care much for early 80s but I'd challenge you to find a subpar Peggy-O from '82.
I was at this show in the Phil zone about fifty feet from the fat man, when he drops his pick, awe man goosebumps, everyone I went to that show w is now dead I hope they’re dancing in heaven
I love you Jerry Garcia. I will keep your music alive. I'll pass all my CDs, shirts, records, you name it, down to my children. You will never be forgotten... What a wonderful man.
I saw these guys live something like 70-times...and it was always special to get this song. This is actually a very old American folk song whose origins are unknown...the name of the song is actually "Fennarrio" or "Fenarrio" and many others have also covered this song. I miss Jerry, but I feel lucky to have seen them as many times as I did, and really like this version...thanks for posting.
@@itsgonnbeok7249 The lyrics depict a story set in Fennario, where a captain falls deeply in love with a woman named Pretty Peggy-O. He proposes marriage to her, promising freedom for her cities in return. However, Peggy-O hesitates because she feels he doesn't have enough wealth (guineas), fearing her mother's disapproval. The captain, on the other hand, believes that Peggy-O's mother might change her mind upon seeing his wealth and position. However, as the song progresses, there is a tone of despair and a sense of a doomed love. The captain warns that if he ever returns, he would burn her cities, suggesting a tumultuous and possibly unrequited relationship. Ultimately, Sweet William (the captain) dies, having spent all he had for a maid, and Peggy-O is left to mourn his loss. The lyrics narrate a tragic tale of love, societal expectations, and the consequences of decisions made in the throes of passion.
After seeing the last three Chicago shows, man do I miss what Jerry brought to the Dead and music! No disrespect to the rest of the band, Bruce and Trey
I agree...I saw a few of these early 90s Peggy Os and at the time thought they were so perfect with that slap delay and amazing tone. But it's all about the 70s Peggy Os. Atlanta 77, New Haven 78, etc.etc. ect. I was way too young to see those but saw all I could from 88-95. This brings back very good times. Thanks fo sharing.
@Ocean Size And the best dose was a Jesus blotter lol 200,000 Deadhead squatter pilgrimage to Vegas for a week every year tripping through that kaliediscope world....
I was there. Stayed the night at Lake Mead. Then, went back the next morning. My buddy wanted to go, but I stayed. After Sunday's show, I wandered around the lot looking for someone with LA plates...I found some heads with balloons and asked for a ride. They obliged and drove me to Victorville. I fell asleep in their car and they woke me up as they entered my town...they dropped me off at home. Kindness matters
how fortunate i was to be there for these shows. im not and have never claimed to be a dead head or whatever, but these shows were absolutely magical and some of my greatest memories spawned from the 2 yrs 16-ish friends and i, in 4 separate cars drove from El Paso to Vegas for a total of 6 nights w/ some some of the coolest people on earth and the greatest vibes imaginable, all set to the tone of Jerrys extremely distinctive guitar playing. i got it. i understood what this band meant to people
jerry is waiting for us in the heavens, we are still here keeping the vibe alive. looking forward to seeing all the brothers and sisters in NYC this weekend!
Some may argue that there were more technically proficient guitarists, some may say there were more inventive guitarists, and there are plenty that cram more notes in a bar, but NOBODY has ever played with more emotion than Jerry.
Yes he did man, I saw him and the Dead of course close up many times in the mid late 70's Best shows ever in my Heart! Capt. smiled a knowing smile.......
I keep telling this tale but I Hated the GD when I was growing up, just despised them because all I ever heard and all my stoners ever played was 'Truckin' and I found it lacking in so many ways, I vowed to stay away from them. Fast forward when I was 23 and got a job as a night auditor at a hotel, balancing the days books. My claim to fame was knocking out all the work then getting stoned and gliding high the rest of the night. One time some guy from the previous shift left some dead tapes and I pressed "Play"..That was all she wrote! I still dislike Truckin' and thankfully they did not play them much during my 32 concerts I saw of them :)
I woke up the only person left on the blacktop of the Excalibur casino parking lot and needless to say it was fuckin hot and I was so beyond angry, angrier than any previous show and Sam Boyd 94" made like 390 but my people had to step over me to get in the van so after walking, because I was so mad I had fuckin smoke coming off me and u was bottom row Phil zone, 15 feet from stage when they dropped this gem n right when he dropped his pick I spun around and there were my people yo, I hugged em and I wish I could one more time because they're all gone but epic moments epic memories, love to all man
One of Many That Hooked Me! Such Soul and Beautiful Energy when the Dead Played Even if a one of them were off a little...they Jammed Through!!!! So Blessed To Have Experienced Many Live Shows!!!!
Jerry is / was....One of One.... saw him in Waterbury ct in April 1975....and multiple times after that...I finally learned this song... it's in my top Ten 🌈🔥🌾🌈
