I grew up in Stockton and my parents are buried right behind the Weber masoleum. I have loved Stockton's history and it's nice to know a little more details on C.M. Weber. I thoroughly enjoyed this history lesson and look forward to more about some every courageous folks that made their way to and settled in the West. Thank you!

Great history lesson - thank you! Knowing that the City I grew up in and love once belonged to Mexico is somewhat bittersweet. I do however, have a great sense of connection to this land either way. My life's journey began in Mexico, in 1964. My family moved to Stockton in 1971 or there abouts. Stockton has received a lot on negative publicity through the years and for good reason. Personally and unfortunately, I contributed my fair share of the problem in my younger days. Today, in my newfound path and as a person in recovery from that lifestyle, I am on the other side and I've been part of the solution for the last 34 years. I have deep gratitude for being allowed to have a "second chance" to become a productive member of society. After 34 years, I still find great satisfaction from the work I do and contributing to this community in a positive way. My sense of personal responsibility to give back has never left me since day one of my new journey. To me Stockton is still Someplace Special. Thank you, Stockton.

Thanks, Kiana. Stockton sure has some unsavory image problems for sure which belie its amazing history. Maybe somebody Stockton (indeed all of California) can clean up its act. The homelessness has become a problem that hasn't been adequately addressed. The same goes for the crime and drugs, which I think are all linked. I truly think there is a spiritual problem at heart.

There's so much interesting history in the Central Valley, thanks for the extensive but concise telling of our history. Edit: For a few years, the Stockton Ports were called the "Mudville Nine," speaking of Mudville. And the current ballpark is called Banner Island Ballpark, though it isn't an island any more.

It is hard to imagine the courage it took to start a 4 - 6 month adventure in a wagon. If you got sick, more than a cold, you might be left by all the others so they wouldn't catch what you have. Bringing all your possessions along and before the end having to leave them along the trail. Wind storms, wind, indians, if your wagon broke or animals died, you walked. It is an adventure enough to look back from the comfort of your home.

Maybe a stroke he kept secret. There are cases of persons personalities flipping after strokes. I remember my neighbor was the generic "get off my lawn" grumpy old man growing up, but after a stroke it was as if a switch went off in his brain. My great grandfather raised hogs in Madera county (formerly Fresno county until it was partitioned) and in the fall my grandfather, a teenager at the time, was given the task of herding the hogs' all the way to Stockton for sale and slaughter. they lived on acorns all the way and grandad lived on what game he could shoot and roots & miners lettuce that he could gather. the journey took about three weeks! He was given a percentage of the profits as wages, but he told me he usually blew it all in the fleshpots of Stockton port before having to walk all the way home again. You had to be a tough pioneer to live in California in those days.

This one was really enjoyable to watch. Growing up in Modesto and visiting Stockton and Weber's Town Mall, I always said to my dad ( Charles Webber) that they spelled the name wrong. Later I had a co-worker, she was a Weber with one "B". We joked that we were two "B" and she was not two "B" LOL Just never know how history is around you. On that note, Remember last week I was talking about the Lincoln Hwy? We decided to do some research on it where it passes through Wyoming. Thats a close drive for us now. Holy Mackerel, In doing research on the highway, turns out there is a Lincoln Hwy Loop in Colorado. Even more surprising, I runs 1/4 mile from where we live now. Never know what history is around you until you start looking. I see how you got hooked on it.

I know my Weber line originated in Germany, to South Carolina, to Tennessee and some went on to California. My Weber line ended up in Washington state because of jobs at the shipyards about 1930 or so. I really do not know enough about that line of family. It is weird, and slightly disturbing, to see your last name on a mausoleum and all those other Webers, who have names of some of my family! Cool to see the street names. And thank you for saying it the way I say it. There’s a Weber State college and they say Weebur, which is probably technically correct but I’ve always hated being called that :-) I’m sure that Charles was probably the German pronunciation of Vaybur being an immigrant. I need to do some genealogy.
