Belgian king refused to apologise for his country's colonial atrocities in Congo. During the 1880s, Belgium had turned Congo into a labour camp where people's hands and feet were chopped and women were raped. Palki Sharma brings you the story.

What's so "untold" about it? Plenty of books and documentaries have been made about the colonial period. Most people aren't interested since it happened before anyone living was even born and rights of conquest were recognized the world over. You're just jealous 'cuz the West was so advanced at the time...and still is for the most part. But China and the rest of east Asia (except North Korea) have almost caught up.

On April 13, 1919, Brigadier General Dyer, (wrongly dubbed the Butcher of Amritsar) a truly great British officer of the Raj Indian Army ordered a squad of what were described as 'Superb Sepoys' (basically not white skinned soldiers but ... locals probably of a different faith from those being fired upon) and opened rifle fire into a 182-metre-long enclosed space in the northern Indian city, where more than 20,000 residents had gathered to protest against implementation of a colonial law that giving unlimited powers to the government there to imprison any undisciplined rebels without trial. It must be said that these people fired upon would be fired upon today in Ukraine but with a commanding officer of less fascinating caliber.

I am from the Netherlands, a country above Belgium on the map. The Netherlands has/had his own colonies (my ancestors were Indian modern slaves from the Dutch colony Surinam and I know the history very well). It always made me angry how Africans, Indians, Indonesians, Chinese and Natives were treated in the Dutch colonies. But Belgium, my God, these atrocities, sickening. It’s beyond me that Congo let the Belgium King to even enter the country never mind the speech. The legacy of violence introduced by Belgium didn’t stop in 1960 but continued by the people of Congo themselves for they had been robbed of the culture they knew and grew up in such violent environment.
