Have you seen the new Revel Superhub at Pier 36 in lower Manhattan? They’re using Kempower 400kW equipment. The location and amenities kinda suck, but the fact that they’re using Kempower gear is interesting.

No crowded fast charger site should permit charging above 80%, either cut it off completely and charge idle fees or raise the rate 10X.

For NYC, under cover from snow & rain, and an attendant, I think their price is a bargain. Maybe they have a discount membership plan. Isn’t EA priced only a few cents less? Uber & Lift should have their own fleet charging areas. Let’s praise this DC fast charger instead of pointing to its deficiencies.

If they've got people charging up to 100% and that's causing issues for them then that's a pricing issue on their end, they should charge by kWh and time, people (especially Uber & Taxis) would quickly get the idea that they should unplug at 80%/whenever their EV charging curve falls off a cliff.

Thats a lot of criticism for not being able to test and refute anything. If everyone in your neighborhood draws 200a from their house panel simultaneously, the 18kva transformer will overload. Yet it works. You charged the taycan and completely omitted the result.

I remember seeing the original Gravity Charging Hub videos and thinking it sounded too good to be true. However, “debunking” their claims through speculation and innuendo isn’t very helpful. It would be cool to at least see what max power they can deliver. Maybe you, Tom and your other colleagues could show up with several high charging power cars and stress test the equipment a bit. Also, have they made any progress on their street side charging. That would be cool to see as well.

Kyle, go talk to It's Electric start-up in Brooklyn. They are making these cute level 2 charging bollards that are installed and connected to the existing buildings. A very cool concept and design.

Useful video thank you! Some similarities with London UK. A lot of ubers are bz4x that overcharge and clog up rapid chargers. So much so that a V4 Tesla Supercharger site on the edge of London has now gone back to Tesla only having been open to all EVs previously!

Uber doesn't put in a hub because they don't have any cars or drivers. They hire a driver on a per drive basis with mini contracts in order to specifically not have to provide any further support for drivers or vehicles. That's how they keep the prices low, by transfering all of the liability and infrastructure support costs to others. By using those services you actively support not having company run hubs.

Our local EVgo charging (Winston-Salem North Carolina) are basically Uber Hubs. Not complaining, just saying.

Your price of 59c per kWh is attractive to us over the pond in the UK where many public charging hubs charge up to 85p/kWh.

I think EV car charging in dense urban environments is a pain because cars existing in dense urban environments is a pain (as they should be).

5:28 You should look into the updated BZ4X charging profile, which goes from 0% to 100% in just over an hour at this point. Still, no one should be charging to 100% unless they absolutely need it, even in the case of E-GMP that can do it in 45 to 50 minutes.

The reason why BZ4X's (and EVs in general) are common in NYC for ride-sharing is because a couple years ago, NYC lifted the cap on the number of TLC (the agency whos responsible for regulating taxis, ride-sharing, and livery) plates issued so long as it was an electric vehicle or wheelchair accessible. Eventually, a judge blocked the plan for EVs, and drivers were desperate to get their applications in before the ban took effect in late 2023. Since there were many BZ4X's sitting on dealer lots and Tesla deliveries took a while, many of these drivers flocked to buy the BZ4X. However, I doubt most of them knew or cared about how slow they charge and/or the range; they just wanted to get their hands on a TLC plate. As someone who drives an EV, seeing these and Chevy Bolts at EA or other fast charging stations are frustrating, especially if they are charging to 100%. IMO, it was a poor execution by NYC to just flood the streets with EVs without the infrastructure to support them.

Just bill a minimum kW. Especially in NY. This is essentially how all power/gas utility works. If you are sitting there you are paying for 50 kW. Come as often as you want. But if you don’t condition or charge properly you pay.

Great to see Drew trying to put the cable and dire air line into the Taycan’s cheapest of cheap tyre inflator - my Mini Countryman S E has the same one and I’m already, since April this year, on the second one because the air line has got nipped in the stowage mouldings of the pump body. The built in pressure gauge on that compressor is also woefully inaccurate or my TPMS sensors aren’t working properly!

I swear there was a out of spec podcast about this exact location with the creator of this. I could be wrong. However great idea for a urban environment. There has to be some way to deal with the ubers and taxi's. Maybe a charge limit or a different rate would make the companies setup their own charging locations for their vehicles.

Is it 59 cents per kWh plus a parking fee? It seems like this would be near impossible to be profitable at that rate considering even if they had 75kw on average going out of each plug that's still only (75 * .59) 44.25 and hour. It seems like just running a regular parking garage with security would be way more profitable since you need near 0 infrastructure or energy costs.

In this case, it indicates that the Gravity station can provide the full 500 A of current all the way up to 1000 V (i.e., 500 kW), and that contrasts with the current 350 kW (500 A up to 700 V) and the 400 kW (500 A up to 800 V). At this point, Tesla is really the only automaker attempting to push charging power past 300 kW based on increasing current (e.g., the Cybertruck), but the production EV closest to maxing out these units would still be the 200 kWh Ultium EVs, which should accept a peak of ~380 kW. With an updated J3400 socket, those 200 kWh Ultium packs might accept as much as 450 kW peak, but there's still the issue of the battery itself being short on voltage required to reach 500 kW. What I'm far more interested in is the site throughput. Just as Tesla V3 can't provide 250 kW to every stall when the station is fully occupied, my assumption is that each of these stalls is individually capable of 500 kW, but the site itself cannot simultaneously provide 500 kW to all 24 stalls at the same time. I wouldn't be surprised to find out that the average power per stall at this Gravity Hub was only ~150 kW, at which point, cars like the BZ4X charging to full would be a non-issue.

2 points/comment came to my mind during that another great video...: 1-any parking fees to use those parking lot on surcharge of the $0.59/kwh . 2-why not having at least 1 x Level 2 beside 2 x DC chargers to have the possibility to charge over 80%...

That area near Times Square is highly congested ALL DAY. Good luck trying to enter and exit with all of the traffic and aggressive drivers who won't let you enter or exit.

At 12:39 you were talking about if all cars are charging the best they could pull is 90kW. So this is the exact same setup as a V3 and V4 Supercharger. So if Superchargers are perfect, why is it bad that someone copies what Tesla does?

$0.59 x 80% of my cars battery is $35 for the charge. Still cheaper than gas right now. Which is 3.15 cheapest I’ve seen, which would cost $45 for 80% of the tank of my last car. Keeping in mind that a lot of city driving is low speed since people are terrified to drive the 25mph speed limit due to speeding cameras which only take pictures of you hit 36mph. I spend most of my time in the actual city doing between 0-20 mph.

Just a question in my mind; why doesn't DC chargers apply a minimum KWH to stop charging below, say for example 10KWH, and below that automatically stop charging. it could solve the topping off problem of which some cars sitting there just getting 1-2 kwh when there are people still waiting in line to get a charge.

NYC ride share has converted to EV’s. Majority of them do not charge at home. It has become a big issue with ride share and taxis clogging up the charging stations. For a city that never sleeps gravity charging hub not open 24 7 only available when the city has peak traffic. 👎🏼

This whole vid is so sad as far as the EV Transition is concerned. There's about a million cars driving around NYC every day. If 30% were EV's you would need about 50,000 or more charging stations and that's assuming no rideshare or 100% charging. Where in hell would all of those go? You had the same problem in Chicago and LA with rideshare drivers hogging the chargers for a half day or longer. In LA where I am, there are waiting lines basically everywhere. It will take years to upgrade the infrastructure in the big cities. Put an average non tech person in an EV and explain all the geeky stuff about battery management, conditioning, the 80% thing and they go whaaat?? Screw that, I'll keep using a gas station. AND, false advertising. A 300 mile range means nothing when it's actually recommended to charge from 20-80% making it 180 miles and that's in a warm climate. Look what happened when you ran your Tesla down to zero at -20. As a geek you know better but everyone else? Disaster. You only get one chance to make a first impression and it's pretty bad.

If you can't charge at home then you should not buy an electric car period. All you are doing is buying a more expensive car, trading the whole shitty gas station experience for an even shittier electric gas station experience and depending on where you live the price of DC fast charging is literally 10 times more than electricity at home especially at off-peak. Some of the prices these DC fast chargers are charging equates to more than a gallon of gasoline. If you're willing to spend that kind of money why just buy a much cheaper gas car and save some cash?
