One of the things I always point out here is that Ford ultimately messed up because of his whole “trust no one” mantra. Dipper gained his trust after their bonding experience over the DnD clone, but after that, when telling Dipper about the rift, he stressed to Dipper not to tell anyone, even his own sister. So, with Mabel being in the dark about it and emotionally fragile, she was an easy target for Bill.

@@jennyfisher3765 I mean. She literally didn't know that dipper was in possession of anything dangerous. She assumed, naturally, that her brother would have told her if there was something literally world-ending that he was protecting with his life. She shouldn't have given her brother's probably very expensive and important things away to a distant acquaintance just because she was sad, but it was entirely ford's fault that dipper was so dead-set on trusting no one he didn't tell her that there was anything dangerous she should be aware of. And I don't think "easy target" is a defense? This doesn't read as a Mabel fan making up justifications this reads as someone understanding the show's themes and ideas at a base level. "Trust no one" was flawed from the start, that's like a whole thing.

@@jennyfisher3765 Take a chill pill and learn how to read a story Op is 100% right Ford created a metaphorical rift between Dipper and Mabel They're LITERALLY TWELVE He can do whatever he wants when he grows up But what they need most is a stable childhood Even Alex Hirsch highlights that about Ford in the DVD commentary for GF: "Ford’s great flaw is arrogance. He believes that there are special people, and everyone else… …That human attachments are actually weaknesses. The song and dance that he’s giving Dipper here is the exact song and dance that he gave McGucket back when they were younger - ‘You and I are different. We’re better than everyone else. We have a path that no one else can understand. No one else can do this.’ It’s a very seductive idea for Dipper, but he starts to be a little insecure. He kind of can’t believe it, and he’s sort of right to be suspicious, because while Dipper is a smart kid, Ford is projecting. Ford loves Dipper because he sees someone who will tell him ‘yes’ to everything, who will never challenge him, and who will do a really insane, dangerous mission. I know there are some fans who are like ‘Oh, this is a great offer! Dipper should just become a mystery hunter for the rest of his life, not go to high school, not go to college, not be around kids his age…’ But if Dipper had taken the apprenticeship, he probably would have gone the way of McGucket - Turned into a kind of insane, paranoid hermit with no friends, and just kind of losing his mind. So, it is a seductive offer, but ultimately, Dipper needs to try to learn not to grow up too fast.” How hard is it to understand that both Dipper and Mabel's characters show what it means to grow up Not too fast Not too late

It was never about the party. What Mabel is upset about is that everyone important to her is leaving. She's had fun during the summer and she knows she has to go back home. The only thing she had to look forward to was that her and Dipper could at least reminisce about the summer together. But then he announced that he's not returning home. Dipper will stay in gravity falls having adventires and she will be alone doing normal things. It's about her brother that she loves won't be there.

And u have to remember mabel and dippers relationship parallels stan and fords where stans relationship went to shit cuz both gotten too selfish. The main reason mabel is sad isnt cuz shes not having a birthday party, its cuz leaving gravity falls meant leaving her friends and brother and possibly repeating history with the previous mystery twins

Also neat bit of trivia: Alex Hirsch has implied that Marylin, the woman Stan was married to for only 6hrs, is actually Eda from the Owl House. In an in-character commentary, Stan described her as having hair like an air hostess and one weirdly pointy tooth, and she apparently married him in a Vegas wedding just to steal his car. Plus later in the series, we do find out that Eda has gone by the name Marylin in the human world at least once before.

It's misunderstandings like that that make people think Mabel is this awful horrible person. Occasional selfishness, especially as a child, doesn't make someone an irredeemable asshole. If someone tried to make that argument for say, Chloe Bourgeois, I could see that. Oh, and didn't she also tell Dipper _not_ to raise the dead in Scary-oke? By the way, how'd they solve that problem? Oh yeah, with Mabel forcing Dipper and Stan to sing. I don't think she's all that great but calling her more of a psycho than Gideon, the 10 year old menace who torments his father, traumatized his mother, tried to force a girl into a romantic relationship with him because he was obsessed with her, and ended up in, not juvie, but *_prison_* for trying to and succeeding in steal the Pines' home to get a journal as well as spying on everyone in Gravity Falls is just plain stupid. The worst that happened was Dipper was put into a peaceful room with snacks in it for fourteen seconds and then he got slapped by some paper people and got character development. You are definitely right about Scaryoke, though, and I don't how how that didn't cross my mind. I'm not sure if you've noticed, but that rant on Gideon can be done to Mabel as well. She's the source of most of Dipper's insecurities (Perfectly portrayed in "Little Dipper), tried forcing Dipper into confessing to Wendy, abandoned Dipper repeatedly to follow crushes around and get herself in danger but gave Dipper the silent treatment when he did the same, spied on her friends and family in order to play matchmaker (She has a model of the city and it's citizens shown in "The love god" that looks like Gideon's), and got angry with Dipper in the road trip despite it being very clear that Mabel forced him into that situation. The only real differences are that Gideon is rich, and that it makes him believe he's above the law, which is why he ended up getting into jail. Unlike Mabel, Gideon actually changed by the end of the show.

Their entire family has been a bit selfish, for a few generations. I don't really Mabel for giving up the portal in her time of weakness. There are times of a lot of IFs where If Dipper was more confident or if Ford was more trusting or if Mabel was more rational or Stan was more truthful. But in family that's usually how people are within the family. It often takes an outside force to recognize and point out where the bonds are weak. It is easy for us as the omnipresent to see exactly where they need to fix things but even if it weren't a fictional world where there needs to be conflict, they still would need to choose to make change in their behaviour and decide to learn to communicate better for themselves.

This ^^ they all need therapy imo. Mabel's sadness partially came from the fact that she and Dipper are highly dependent on one another (no, not just Mabel on Dipper, Dipper is also dependent on Mabel). That's how it was since they were young so obviously, Mabel realizing that she's going to have to spend four horrible years in high school by herself (which would likely be worsened if she got to go back to Oregon each summer because she'd have to come to the realization that whatever fun she has there won't last and she's going to go back to horrible high school) is going to hurt a lot more than we think because she and her brother care about one another so much and are so close. Stan says it himself, Dipper and Mabel are closer than most siblings. So naturally they'd want to try and do everything together. It's not terrible but when it gets to the point that one twin can hardly function without the other, that's when they both need to sit down with a therapist and slowly but surely come to the understanding that they will always have each other even if they aren't always right next to each other.

A summer that lasts forever. That’s all good and dandy for Mabel, but what about Dipper, never getting to do the apprenticeship he’s been dreaming of? What about their parents, waiting forever for their kids to come home? What about all the innocent people in Gravity Falls who might maybe… want to move on in the year? But no. Whatever anyone else might want be damned, so long as one twelve year old gets to be happy. Even when she doesn’t know what the rift is, she shows zero hesitation to hand it over, without even considering the effects it could have on literally everyone she knows and loves. And I get that she’s vulnerable and impulsive, anyone would be in her situation. But that doesn’t really make it much less selfish, maybe dropping it from completely irredeemable to mostly irredeemable. All that summed to the fact that like you guys say, she is 12 Bill Cipher know about this and went after the most vulnerable who didn't know about the rift. So no, this is not Mabel being selfish. Is Bill Cipher taking advantage of a 12 years old kid in her most vulnerable moment

This is pretty much almost entirely on Ford. He decided to just not warn anybody about how dangerous it is and then didn’t even think about anyone else. He didn’t like Stan, so he just decided that leaving your twin behind is a good thing without considering anyone’s feelings about it. Honestly, he didn’t even give Dipper any time to think about it, it was just a spur of the moment decision. Basically, the moral is that his whole “trust no one” is total bs and needs to be stopped.

I'm glad to see so many people in the comments stick up for her. I'm tired of all the years of seeing Mable hate. The debate shouldn't be if she's "selfish"- she's 12, she's going to be flawed, and like you said, she was emotionally vulnerable. The point is she and her family were the target of a manipulative demon. Bill had been planning this for years and years- he saw an opportunity and struck. If his plan with Mable didn't work, he likely had another plan. Putting the entire weight of the world on the shoulders of a child is insane when there's an entire villain who's actually responsible.

I think people miss that Ford and Stan are a reflection of Mable's fears. Up until she saw the rift between the two brothers, it never occurred to her that she and her brother could ever drift apart. She could be goofy, and confident, and herself because she always knew Dipper would be there and she'd never fully be alone, even when things got sour, just like she'd be there for him. But especially when she learned Dipper might not be going home with her, she panicked, seeing herself in the same position the Stan twins were in that ultimately divided them. She got scared when she realized how fast they were growing up, and when she learned she wouldn't even have her twin with her through these changes, it was the last straw. Also, I just need to add that this debate is stupid. The main characters are 12. A 12 yo girl was manipulated by a demon. That's it, that's the end of the argument. Both kids had been manipulated for months by a demon, because their gruncle (as a grown man) was manipulated first. Yes, she's flawed, but every main character in the show is.

If everyone in my life who mattered felt like they were leaving me, including a twin sibling I'd been with throughout EVERYTHING and all that knowledge got dumped on me at once at the age of 12 and all I had to do to fix it was hand over some object I had no idea as to the significance of because the only people who knew about it decided, for some reason, to not tell me that world-shatteringly important information? Yeah, I'd do it. We know Mabel shouldn't have given over the rift, but she didn't even know what it was and just had the worst day of her life. It's understandable. Honestly, I can't agree with u on Mabel or Dipper. Us humans r personal by nature, we feel things that r closer to us way more than we do big grandious world-changing stuff. That's why even in movies abt alien invasions, wars or natural disasters there is still personal conflict. It helps us actually connect with the story. As many people have said already, Mabel's problem here is not the birthday party, it's her world changing seemingly forever with new unknown challenges and abscence of loved ones. It's scary for any person, no matter the age. Plus, Dipper's actions r kinda selfish to. U were correct to notice that Dipper and Mabel r parallels to Ford and Stan respectively. And just like Ford, Dipper wants to skip his best years and become an achieved person as soon as possible, without thinking of what it'll do to his loved ones and to himself. And he only second thinks it because of how much he's grown over the series. Mabel wants to stay in the past to avoid problems, while Dipper wants to skip them over. Both of their motivations and problems r pretty personal.

Mabel is literally out of the loop in regards to the rift and bill. Yes, its partially because she hasn't shown much interest in Dipper and Ford's escapades(outside of the unicorn mission, which she was never explained the importance of outside of it being an important quest). But that doesn't mean it's her fault. She doesn't know that the rift will cause the apocalypse. She doesn't know about the Bill dream ford had, and that he's now become an imminent threat. Even dipper seemed relaxed about Bill until Ford explained why they all should be worried. Mabel never got that explanation. If anyone's to blame, its Ford for keeping everyone out of the loop. While Stan has had the whole summer to open up and reconcile with the twins, only being selfish out of necessity(Being kicked out onto the streets as a high schooler for a simple mistake, that in the end didn't even impact the many successes Ford acquired during his career, would definitely harden a man.) Ford, who didn't stand up to his parents for kicking his brother out, didn't try to reach out to Stan after he left for college, and wasn't even sympathetic to Stan opening up about enduring years of homelessness, poverty and loneliness, has not come very far in terms of developing empathy. And if you notice the overt parallels between Mabel and Dipper and Stan and Ford, you'll see that blaming and punishing Mabel for her mistake isn't the answer. Much like Ford, I'm sure Dipper would've succeeded regardless of whether or not he accepted Ford's apprenticeship offer. But Mabel probably would have struggled moving up grades alone. And, they would definitely have drifted apart. There's a good chance that Mabel would've ended up jaded and selfish like Stan, and that Dipper would've ended up selfish and out of touch like Ford. Honestly, really confused by your interpretation in this video 🧐🧐🤷

People remember mostly of Mabel's Cons BUT people have forgotten that Dipper ALSO has his Cons as well. One of them is that even though he's "The Smart One", his crush on Wendy DOES get in the way of his thinking ESPECIALLY on what's right or wrong What Mabel did IS SELFISH...but I also understand what she's going through at that moment. I mean even looking at today, growing up can be "not nice". A glimpse of the truth of that reality scared her which is why & how Bill was able to trick her. And truthfully.. Mabel was deliberately approached when she was alone and at her most vulnerable. She thought she was helping a trusted adult. Neither Dipper nor Ford had told her anything about the rift or the danger. She had no idea what she was handing over, or to who. The actual real tragedy here is that Dipper cut Mabel off from information that would have saved them. Ford told Dipper not to trust anyone or tell anyone about the rift, and Dipper listened to him and cut Mabel out. Ford never shared any information with Mabel even though she's been just as much a part of everything Dipper was. The way Ford peeled Dipper away from his sister and manipulated him into silence is actually really characteristic of abusive relationships, and it's what makes him the one at fault for the rift falling into Bill's hands. If a grown ass adult tells you how clever and mature you are for a 12 year old, that you're the only one that understands, that you need to keep everything he tells you a secret, that's a BIG red flag. While I don't think Ford actually has deliberate ill intent here, he's leaning hard on his own feelings regarding the split between him and his brother, and his own years of isolation, and he's grooming Dipper to be more like him because he thinks that's the right way to be - paranoid, isolated, and disconnected from human relationships or family. But he's clearly also lonely and desperate for connection because he's trying so hard to bond with a 12 year old he literally just met. He's not a healthy dude. This show is primarily focused on Dipper, and it follows what Dipper wants and what Dipper values. So, the watchers also want what Dipper wants and value what Dipper values. Any time Mabel wants something for herself that conflicts with what Dipper wants, watchers express a lot of hate. And I think it's really gross. The idea that women and girls should give up the things that are important to them because the things a guy wants are more important is pretty pervasive in our culture and I think it's the biggest miss of this show.
@TF2CrunchyFrog

It's not a miss of the show (the show's episode hammers it home how terrible Mable feels), but a miss of a part of the audience/fandom when they demand that Mable the 12 year old be "perfectly rational" and sacrifice everything so that her brother can become apprentice to a space-time-traveling great-uncle.

Mabel never knew. The one whos selfish is Ford. He told Dipper not to tell anyone, not even his sister, why? Because he thought he and Dipped were the smart ones, and Mabel and Stan aren't as good as them, they couldn't possibly handle the situation. Ford always underestimated his brother, never trusted him or asked for actual help, and he taught Dipper to do the same - to not trust his closest person - his sister. I would be able to forgive Mabel more easily if she had to make some sacrifice in the end that was hard, kinda like she was making up for it. But instead the sacrifice is made for her. Dipper gives up his dreams so that she will be more comfortable in high school. It just doesn't seem like Mabel learned anything over the series. When Bill was tricking Dipper, yeah he was decieving him, but he made some good points. The majority of the series, Dipper and everyone else has been forced to make sacrifices and accomidations for Mabel, and the only time Mabel did anything to make up for it was in Sock Opera. Mabel did not guilt trip him then, he decided after he moved and realized how he would actually feel about not sharing a room with Mabel. Dipper accepted Ford's offer litterally in the heat of the moment, they just finished their first mission together, of course the offer would sound great when you're excited from a successful mission. I guess you're ignoring most of what I said, then, but I'll try to elaborate; I brought it up because my perspective comes from a similar angle as Dipper/Ford (as opposed to Mabel/Stan) It isn't a black-and-white decision (you really shouldn't be looking at it as "sides"), and you don't necessarily need to come from the Mabel/Stan perspective of emotional connection to get that. Saying I'm "directly against science" is a flat out lie since I literally said I'm still in favor of Dipper pursuing scientific advancement - I'm fairly certain it is what he'll do, and maybe even dedicate his life to in the future, but that's outside the scope of the story being told

The thing is that Mabel was really upset and emotionally confused and vulnerable mixed with the fact that she didn't even know what the rift was her brother kept it a secret from her thanks to his and her uncle ford, all she knew was her brother's leaving her and neither of her closest friends would be able to come to her birthday and that she had nowhere she can hold it because summer's over and almost everywhere is busy. The point of this episode is to show how ford caused his relationship with stan to split, because instead of talking his decision over stan more deeply and consider his brothers feelings towards this and acknowledge them instead he disregard them for his excitement. And Now he's basically splitting up Mabel and Dipper up in almost the exact same way. Mabel was looking for emotional support after one of the most bad days of her young life from her brother, instead she was met with the fact that summer's over and that he too would leave her when she goes back home. This ain't Mabel being selfish this is just bill doing what bill does best playing with people vulnerabilities. You guys do really okay when it comes to understanding the episodes then with that last one you guys just completely missed the mark. Yeah Dipper shouldn't keep having to give up things for Mable happiness but in this one he shouldn't have to miss going to high school and growing up with is the sister just for some basement with smart things in it and his old great uncle who suddenly appeared in his life. When mable's been there since the beginning for him. Dipper and Mabel are each other's rocks and that crack started when Ford asked Dipper to keep the rift a secret from Mabel. I can almost certainly guarantee it that if Mable knew what the hell it was and knew that Bill was after it she wouldn't have gave it him. It's just ford didn't trust her because she wasn't smart enough, like stan after he broke his machine by being dumb. Dipper's 12 going on 13, if you think that him staying would have been a good decision when already one of the most socially awkward pre-teen I've ever seen then you're kinda dumb, Ford already got his chance of experiencing growing up and he's telling Dipper to give up his just because he can't mission alone. When he already has a perfectly good brother that he could easily forgive since it's been 50-60 years since he broke it and almost 30 years of him trying to get him back after like 30 mins of being with him. But like I said Ford easily disregards Stans feelings and know he's making Dipper do the same with Mable. But Mable ain't like stan she would just get consumed by her fantasy of emotions instead of bottling them up like stan does.

I'm glad to see the comment section almost entirely defending mable, because when this episode aired there was a LOT of people blaming mable for the literal apocalypse, instead of literally the demon who tricks and manipulates people in moments of vulnerability. It's not that her things are less important-- we just VIEW them as less important. Ford is not in fact going to 'save the universe,' he could've just... glued the thing and moved along. Nothing else is putting the universe in imminent danger. "it's about his future" it's able Mable's future too. She doesn't have a certain one like Dipper MIGHT have with ford, she has to go to highschool and be Alone if Dipper stays behind in Gravity Falls. She's literally never not had her twin, even if they weren't as close before this summer. Maybe they could've had a good cry and a long night's sleep and worked it out. But weirdly enough some demon was lurking around waiting for their chance to take advantage of people. If it weren't mable, it would've been someone else.

I feel like the only reason Dipper's selfish actions are excused is because they're often related to the answers you as the viewer want to watch. It doesn't make it any less important than Mabel's selfish actions, it's just because you're more interested in the mystery vs her antics. Also, Dipper is literally 12 on the cusp of 13 - he doesn't even need to be thinking about his future education. He could literally go for an apprenticeship when he's of age, after they've had time to plan and get on with their lives so Mabel also has plenty of time to figure out what she's doing. But then again you guys continue to think Dipper has a chance with Wendy if only it weren't for the age difference despite her making it clear it's not happening, so maybe it's just a matter of viewing from a guy's lens

It always frustrates me that people hate on Mabel for being selfish here because like... Ford tried to enlist a literal child into a life threatening mission to save the world. Mabel is freaking out because everything around her is changing, and she's looking for a sense of stability, then the single person she has relied on her entire life decides to leave her. Mabel handing over the rift wouldn't have happened if Ford had just decided to trust EVERYONE. He explicitly only told Dipper because he didn't trust his family, didn't trust Stanley, and by extension, didn't trust Mabel. Ford treats Dipper as a peer, which makes Dipper feel validated, but it also blinds him to the fact that the situations Ford puts him in are inherently dangerous. Dipper and Ford almost DIED because Dipper was scared of the security drones. Dipper was scared because he's literally just a kid, and he's not ready for that. Ford had no right offering that apprenticeship to Dipper at the age he's at. Also with all the other cases of Mabel being selfish or acting in her own self interest... the things Dipper gave up were not time sensitive. Mabel had one singular shot at getting Waddles. Dipper getting Wendy a stuffed animal was never going to make her date him. Mabel wanted to save Mermando's Life and return him to his family. Dipper's job as a lifeguard was solely based on Wendy being there, and she was inevitably going to get fired at some point. Even with sock opera, Dipper very well could've just... waited until Saturday. Although with sock opera, Mabel 100% should've noticed something was up, and could've done something given he was obviously not well, but in the end she did the right thing, and again, Dipper could've just helped her and together they could've tackled one thing at a time. They both have things that are incredibly important to themselves respectively, and those things are equally as meaningful to each one. For Dipper, it's the mysteries and Wendy, and for Mabel, it's the relationships she forms with people around her. She's often written off as childish and stupid compared to Dipper, but really it's just that she values relationships and consistency over mystery and knowledge. The twins are both selfish at times, because everyone is, but for some reason Mabel always gets the hate for it. Mabel running away is completely valid, because here you have someone who is frightened by the changes around her, suddenly forced to face the idea of being without the person she's grown up with. I honestly can't blame Mabel for this one. (Sorry for the like essay going on here I just really hate the constant misunderstandings and hate that Mabel's character faces!!!)
@47ratsinahoodie
@47ratsinahoodie 2 года назад
The way you explained Ford here makes me think he wanted to put Dipper on a similar path to himself before Mabel had the chance to ruin it like Stan did to him, all while not understanding that Mabel and Dipper get along so well that she wouldn't try to hurt him like that (cause in Ford's head, Stan messes up and ignores things on purpose). I think Ford's line in The Last Mabelcorn sums it up well when he says that he hasn't been in this dimension for a while and asks if it's okay to give children weapons. He would have needed a lot of time to readjust to live in this dimension before he or Dipper would be ready for an apprenticeship and in that time, Mabel would have been in a better state and Dipper would have actually been prepared to do something like that, IF he even still wanted to (since he would have to be okay with good chances of dying almost every day). Or hell, he and Mabel could both stay and this time around, the Mystery Twins _wouldn't_ have to split up.

@@47ratsinahoodie Like it’s not like he’s intentionally doing anything malicious he’s just. Doing what he knows. It feels like he’s more of projecting his own relationship with his brother onto Dipper and Mabel’s relationship with each other. I quite agree; he genuinely just doesn’t comprehend how to interact with the kids which leads him to making some probably less than responsible choices. It’s a lot of pressure and responsibility to put on a kid’s shoulders, especially when your mantra is “trust no one” because no matter how unhealthy that mindset is, the things Ford does seem to work for him, so by default he just assumes that they’ll work for Dipper, even if Dipper is 1) a child, 2) has a solid relationship with Mabel, and 3) has been shown in the past that sometimes trust is necessary. I think it’s a fascinating dichotomy between the two sets of twins, because you have that idea of learning from your family’s strife, but you also have Dipper echoing the trust no one, while Mabel is the one who trusts. TLDR: I relate heavily to Mabel, and when people call her heartless I feel like people are calling me heartless. I do agree she was selfish, but she's a young person with a lot to learn. When people discuss Mabel being selfish, I don't disagree, but she's 12. It really hurts, considering the core of her character is what I relate to the most. It always feels like people are calling me a heartless monster. I did something selfish too when I was her age (12), all because I was afraid of my best friend and my other friends abandoning me. In the span of less than a year, I was alone, and only then did I realize the selfishness of my actions. It is the biggest source of trauma in my life. I have considered ending my life many times during and after highschool. I constantly blamed myself because ultimately it was my fault. But I was 12. I didn't understand. I was afraid. I was desperate. In my fear, I was only thinking about myself; stopping my best friend from leaving me, getting what I wanted because I didnt want my best friend in the whole world to leave me. For Mabel, that's her brother. Nowadays I am an antisocial shut-in with no friends outside of family members. I am afraid to tell anyone how I really feel, or even try making friends because I am afraid to feel the hurt and pain that rejection will bring, again. I let people walk all over me now, because I don't want them to get upset and leave me too. I used to be so distraught that I would cry almost every day I came home from school. I used to be so depressed that I slept more than 14 hours whenever there was no school, as long as I possibly could when there was school, and I would usually go to bed early when I could because I felt like nothing else could comfort me but my dreams (and my cat who slept with me every night.) I'm not saying this to get condolences or sympathy or attention. I just want people to take a better look at Mabel's situation and realize the reality that there are kids who have gone through and will go through similar situations, and that writing Mabel off as a selfish monster is blatantly incorrect. She may be selfish, but she's a child who is dealing with the fear of abandonment by someone who she loves with all her heart, not to mention it is probably the first time she's experiencing this fear. These facts, coupled with other things that happened the same day that make it feel (to her) like the worst day of her life, (which by the way are real fears in the mind of a 12 year old) put her in an incredibly vulnerable emotional state where she can be easily manipulated if she thinks it will solve her fear and make the emotional pain/distress go away. Sorry for ranting. Again, I am not asking for pity, or attention, or sympathy for my situation. I appreciate it, but even though I still have depression, I am in a significantly better place than I was in highschool. I just want people to understand that what Mabel did came from a very raw, accurate, emotional place for a 12 year old. And that it doesn't make her a terrible person. Yes it was selfish, but she's 12, a young person, a child. She's still learning.

yikes ! people mischaracterize mabel so drastically in her actions - YES, she is indeed selfish in pursuit of her desires. brash, inconsiderate, rambunctious - all of these words perfectly encapsulates a child who longs for things unattainable . but it doesn’t boil down into her ideals of a birthday party - she’s so obviously scared of relinquishing childhood. afterwards her hopes for the future were obliterated and the thing she holds most dear (dipper, her brother) is now on the leave, it’s no absurdity for her to act so irrationally. this isn’t about her bidding farewell to a birthday party, it’s about her losing every dream she has left if she isn’t with her brother. whilst goals of the twins are starkly different and one is astonishingly more significant, you could at least try to see mabel’s distorted perception of conditional happiness. dipper fixates on the future, and mabel gravitates to the past - this juxtaposition is integral in their story and is ultimately irreproachable. and if anyone says i’m biased to mabel, just know that between the twins - dipper has always been my favourite. obviously mabel is accountable for calamities that were waiting to brew, but kids are impressionable and of course mabel would fall prey to such deception 😭

A deleted scene due to time constraints in Dipper & Mabel Vs. The Future was Mabel receiving a phone call from her parents telling her she couldn't bring Waddles back home with her to California. This happened before she overheard Dipper saying he would stay in Gravity Falls. As for the rift we have to remember that Mabel had no idea of the rift or its significance (Ford told Dipper to keep it secret), and while she shouldn't have been so eager to hand it over, keep in mind that she was talking to (who she assumed to be) Blendin, someone she & Dipper left on good terms with in Blendin's Game. Also, Bill is a master manipulator (he did trick Ford & scar Fiddleford after all), so between possessing & posing as a trusted individual & coming at the target at their lowest point with the promise of happiness & it's no wonder Mabel so easily bought into it when she might not have otherwise. EDIT: Forgot to mention this but in The Last Mabelcorn a fight scene between the girls and unicorns was planned but was cut due to time constraints.

Also to be fair to Mabel, it's not _just_ about the birthday party... imagine spending your whole life with a built in best friend who understands you when a lot of people think you're weird and a lot to deal with. A best friend you do everything with, whose such an important and prevalent presence in your life that you have a difficult time with the idea of just not sharing a bedroom anymore. Now imagine finding out they're not going to be living with you anymore and you're going to to this big, scary next step (high school) all by yourself when you've never been all by yourself before-not like that. Also you're twelve. I feel like Mabel freaking out after hearing Dipper was going to stay in Gravity Falls is pretty understandable. Also, Dipper never told Mabel about the rift, she doesn't know what the stakes are. They sort of made peace with Blenden last time they saw him, and they mess with magical trinkets all the time, especially Ford. If she knew what the rift was, or knew it was Bill, Mabel wouldn't have handed it over. Making the choice to make summer last forever and give away something of her uncle's _was_ selfish, but nowhere near as selfish as it may seem to the viewer who is fully aware of what's at risk
